Finally Mongols and Byzantines managed to calm down their horses.
But now the Samurais are like crazy with their Katanas... although that makes them funnier... it's like they are paranoid and ready to fight like good suicidal Japanese.

While the Bolyars' horses now gone wild and the Magyar Huszars still couldn't calm theirs.

Holy shit the old models look so much better... for me personally their vagueness makes space for the viewers imagination. Now I know that Brit's longbowman actually had a helmet instead of what I though to be big dark hair and I don't like this fact.

Why didnt they add in idle animations for boats? They could have added some kind of rocking motion to make it look like theyre actually on water...

I always liked the ones that were completely different from regular units. Like the Chu Ko Nu who fired arrows like machine guns. Or the teutonic knight, who was like the hoplite in AoE1.

What irks me is the way some idle animations loop, like the War Elephants, they don't look natural at all.
I like how Teutonic Knights look.
I enjoy the new designs but... the elephants definitely seem to have gotten into the barrels of alcohol or something. They idle like they're about to topple over. I wish there was a bit of way to randomize the units movements it seems a be off even with so few units to all move the same way the same time.

One important fact is that the older models are not ever viewed at such close distance and designed to look better from the distance of the original resolution.

But unfortunately those are not Magyar Hussars. Those are the Polish Winged Hussars. Magyars also had Hussars but they looked differently. Even the original work did not get the Magyar Hussar real look but that was closer. Dont get me wrong it looks awesome, but we like our polish buddies and the Winged Hussar is their trademark. :)

The teutonic knights look so amazing now, only a shame the cross on their tunic is not always black as it should be. A colored cape is enough to show team color.
Cathapract might have gotten the best improvement out of all of them though, but generally I like all improvements.
Just a shame the player colors aren't that great outside of red and orange. The rest could be muted a little to look more like a color that might have been used in history.
Yeah, but you need bright colors to make everything quickly recognizable.

The original yellow color was so much better, the new one is a bit green.
I do like that the new green is consistent with its mini-map color.
Blue could be more muted easily, no other color looks like it.
Grey could better be black to stand out more.
The Magyar Hussars aren’t supposed to have wings. Only Polish Winged Hussars had wings (duh).

Tarkans only light their torches when they are not idle. Teutonic Knights' white robe and black cross would make the unit harder to recognise, for instance if the player 6 (Purple has a teutonic knight) but I assume its the player 7 (For having a black cross). That could cause some unit recognition problem. About jans, I do find their look a bit bland for a janissary. I wish they could get their hats.

They still forgot to give Janissaries their distinctive white hats, which were literally the defining item that MADE them "Janissaries" vs any other soldier with an early gun... And I liked the older War Elephant animations: if you ever watch African Elephants, they DO wave their ears around like that all the time, because they're fanning themselves with them. Those are basically giant radiators. Standing there and swaying, and especially so often and so quickly, doesn't resemble a graceful giant in the least bit...

It's such a shame that other rts games get proper love and treatment and Blizzard raped Warcraft III and destroyed it on top of being unfaithul. They even mocked and laughed at it like bunch of morons on several occassions....even at 2018 blizzcon...... and now its in ruin :/

Eagle Warriors apply to all American civs (Aztecs, Mayans, & Incas) instead of one civilization, serving as their replacement Scout since they don't have Stables. As such, they aren't unique units.

Battle Elephants and Elite Battle Elephants are exclusive to the Southeastern Asian civilizations (Vietnamese, Malay, Burmese, & Khmer). Four civs can use them, so they aren't unique. Eagle Warriors are used by three civs and likewise aren't unique.
@@kimarous Battle Elephants should actually be made available for Indian Civ. They are the ones who first trained and fielded elephants in warfare.

I don't know how I feel about cataphract. The DE one is historically accurate, sure and they still look good. But the old cataphract looked so badass. The designs also matched their stats. The new catas feel like they should have 3 or 4 base pierce armor but they still melt against archers. Catas attack rate is among the fastest and the new catas with same rate looks unbelievable
When I first saw them I (used by enemy team) wondered if it were some evolution from the light cavalries. It doesn’t look that different for me to bother much now.
The elephants in DE are vibing to the ost.
I see those Byzantine Cataphracts received the love they needed, at last! Much improved!

Literally no unit in the game is any more accurate than those horned helmets. Every piece of that Viking's equipment is as inaccurate as the horned helmet. From the ugly short sleeved shirt to the tiny, overly thick shield with a metal rim to the weird leather cuffed boots they're wearing.

Plus it's a multiplayer game rather than hard core history so balancing is needed thru out all factions

I like the older ones more. They all have animations that make them look alive, the newer ones just stand around and have a breathing animation.

Let's take the Samurai Animation as an example, in the older version there were multiple poses for the samurai (standing, sheathing sword, holding the sword on back) while in the newer version the Samurai not only has his sword backwards but also only has 1 animation.
I just find out that the new models are boring than the old one. Most of them just stand and nothing else, no breath, no look around, the horse not step up. Love the old models

I've never played updated versions of AoE2 other than the original 1999 game but the graphics for the DE are just incredible. Extrely lifelike and awesome
Something about the old ones being not quite smooth looking and just a little bit hard to discern make me love them way more than the DE. Idk, always liked how the graphics weren't perfect for this game but you saw exactly what you needed and sometimes a mapmaker would work some real magic to make things look phenomenal

Axes in DE are ridiculous.
Woad Raiders's axes look like cartoonish prehistoric stone axes.
What Boyars seem to be carrying is a bardiche, a giant, heavy, two-handed infantry weapon, akin to a shorter halberd. In a single hand. On a horse. Cavalry axes were one-handed, shorter and lighter.
Throwing axeman - Yeah, you just try to CARRY that which is depicted (two enourmous double-bladed axes), not to mention the throwing part! Double-headed battle axes were virtually nonexistent in western warfare, and would certainly not be for throwing. Frankish throwing axemen used a francisca (the name is revealing), look it up.
Berserkers are not as awful as the previous examples, so I'll give them a pass.
Lumberjacks are the only ones they did correctly.

@@bla2030 maybe dont whine about it so much then, you both? Most of the gameplay units range from at least 350 to 1600 AD, like the Cataphracts or Throwing Axemen who were from much early periods. Most of these units wouldn’t even meet, even in the related campaigns. So its natural they wouldn’t get everything right, considering they've taken liberties with the campaigns as well. Its still fairly close enough to work out.

definitive units has less idle movements, I think thats a point where the older versions were better. Also the weapons in most case look bigger or strange, which doesn't resembles the original designs, but in overall the quality update is visible as well.
The other units look great! But the Byzantines Cataphract looks weaker for some reason, like they're slow and like they're a just a less/ thinner armored paladin.
I always thought Berserks wore some kind of orange hood mask until I saw they were actually beards and hair
Love both SOOOOOO MUCH💖💖💖💖💖💖!!!!!! Both are worth playing. If you wanna enjoy the classic feel then play the HD edition. And if you wanna enjoy modern graphics then play DE. I will buy both💖💖💖💖💖💖.

why did they change the animations and even left some out ??? The unique animations of each unit gave visual cues to immediately identify them in a split second
So much this. A lot of the basic horses animations are just gone, scouts, mangudai, cataphracts and others shared that same animation and you can see they redid one very similar to the boyar
because a lot of them would look uncanny? Just look at the remastered Samurau for instance.
I never realised War Elephants had those spiked leg band things.
They're even on the original sprites as well.
i never saw how much detail is in the unit graphics. i have both aoc without the hd, so the old cd version, but also bought the aoc de. i am actually blown away now and glad i supported the devs ^^
What's with the wings? Hungarian cavalry never had such things on (unlike the polish hussars)

I came here looking for this comment. Totally agree.
The throwing axeman's francesca is wayyyy too big. Oversized like that it looks more like a (fancy) two headed boarding axe from the 1700's than a merovingian era frankish axe. No way they could have easily thrown such a beast.
they werent skinny and gun reliant that were the people from 1700 or your gens, you know.
I think I preferred the slower, more deliberate animations of the original for some of these. Namely, the Samurai. They seem more anxious for combat than a Huskarl or Berserker, the latter of which I expected to be looking around for something to fight constantly. The Elephants have a groove to them, so that's okay with me, and I do like the less hyperactive idles of the new cavalry units. As a suggestion, the Teutonic Knights should be made to instill a dominating presence through a body stance adjustment, and an animation that's as slow as their movement speed.

when i played Age 2 for the very first time, i thought that teutonic knights where black people with some sort of sunglasses, it is nice to see how different they look in DE.

There are many instances where a unique unit in the original idles with back straight and head up, whereas in DE they are markedly bent forward and sloped down (most frequently with the head. Conquistador 2:49 a good example of this.. Quasimodador / Kyphositive Edition™) . I thought it was conspicuous, and can't say that I think DE looks better in this regard. Original units looked proud, stout and alert, whereas the new ones look, well.. simply flaccid, albeit more aggressive. (aggressively flaccid)
A similar thing is the static light gyrating and fidgeting thing the DE units often got going, looking too much like they are doing some kind of very subtle dance, more than anything else. I think it looks silly. Yet again in this regard the orignal units mostly leave a better impression.
Yeah, I know it's not that important, and I know it's not exactly gonna change. Doesn't stop me from noticing and leaving a comment though.
I really like the definitive edition but they kinda remade all the units a little too generic, I remember repositioning my army of teutonic knights just to straighten the hood.
