  • Volkswagen has introduced a new cylinder deactivation technology for its 1.4 liter, 4-cylinder TSI power plant.
    This announcement represents the first time a cylinder shutoff technology has been adapted to a 4-cylinder unit.
    On the 1.4 liter TSI unit, 2 of the 4 cylinders are shut down when load is minimal or moderate on the engine. The deactivation can make for up to a 0.6 liter/100 km improvement in fuel-economy when coupled with a stop-start system.
    Savings are even greater with certain drive modes. For example, at a constant speed of 50 km/h (28 mph) in 3rd or 4th gear, the deactivation technology can account for up to a 1.0 liter/100 km improvement in fuel-consumption.
    The cylinder deactivation takes effect when the engine speed on the 1.4 TSI unit is between 1,400 and 4,000 rpm and torque load between 25 and 75 Nm (18 and 55 lb-ft).
    The system works through sensors in the gas pedal which track the driving behavior. In a non-uniform pattern, such as in a roundabout, the system is suppressed so as to allow the driver access to full power if needed.

    GM has had it on its engines for years

    Brilliant, they're actually mechanically disconnected which is a major difference to selective deactivation of fuel injection only.

    again a crap in the engine compartment.
    more sensors- more electronic- more repairs- more bills

    For me it seems like there was a big waste of energy involved in this solution, like stopping 1/2 of the cylinders was the priority, not saving petrol. Will it work?

      I remember hearing about problems with other like this technology in the past. Why overcomplicate things when they are already overcomplicated to begin with.

    @OtherVincentLee The VW 1.4TSI Engine is 160HP Audí tune this engine in other markets to 180HP more than enough. Also this sistem, for long Hi-way travel in cruse control mode; makes a lot of sence...

    My 90s 4 cylinder Honda Civic did this. It was cool at first, but annoying over time.

    I drive one TSI this week and consumed an average 24l/100km.1l/100km does not seem to make much difference. And since we're talking about a TSI does not seem to have more than 100hp! Only appears in advertising!

    I don't understand what this does? Does it shut down two cylinders to save gas?

  • @bluebeast1000
    @bluebeast1000 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    yes im guessing it can tell how hard u push on the gas while driving and so if ur only costing along or driving slow it stops useing 2 of the 4 pistons so it wud almost cut gas useage in half wen u arnt useing the engine power much

    @OtherVincentLee the full power of the tsi is from 122 up to 185 hp, it is not slow :D

    I think it's a good one but it should but adopted later once taking out all the car's weight has been exhausted because it's more moving parts which means more maintenance.

    @OtherVincentLee THIS especifically engine also counts with an advanced vareable management admission sistem and the goal here; is being over-all efficient, (performance and economic as possible) That Honda engine; weights a-lot and is not as eficient as this

    I hope the cylinder deactivation comes to the US. Then VW would be the only one that does 4 cylinder to 2 cyinders. Honda and others have done 6 cylinder to 3 cylinders but nothing with 4 cylinders yet.
    Then the Beetle, Jetta, Passat, Eos gassers will finally get decent MPG

    A 1.4 TSI in a small-bodied car has more than enough power to get you into trouble in any case. Ask anyone with a Polo GTI.

    Hello! Do you think is worth buying a 1.5 tsi engine with 150hp on a skoda superb? Is reliable? The car has 40000km

    • @axebeu
      @axebeu 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The engine itself is reliable. The gearboxes not. The dq200 is quite fragile, i got an a3 8y with this engine, quite economical and sprinty, but i had it for clutches replacement at 16.000 km (warranty). I talked with the dealership and they said it’s a known issue since 2016 for these.
