  • The Bosch cylinder deactivation facilitates the deactivation of not required cylinders within part-load operations in almost every gasoline engine. This saves fuel and thus reduce CO2-output.
When the driving situation allows for cylinders to be deactivated -- e. g. upon marginal requirements on the motorway -- the engine is made ready for switching off some of the cylinders. For the still active cylinders, that means having to help generate the torque otherwise contributed by the deactivated ones.
As a result of the shift of the load point and due to the partially deactivated charge exchange, the fuel consumption and the CO2-output are reduced.
When driving requirements demand the cylinders to be reactivated, for an overtaking maneuver for instance, this occurs within just milliseconds. Engine activities are carried out in a torque-neutral manner, imperceptible for the passengers in the vehicle.
Cylinder deactivation is a highly effective measure to reduce fuel consumption and CO2-output of combustion engines while meeting the most stringent demands for driving dynamics and comfort.

I came up with this idea a year ago and when i searched for it it was already done. Wish i live 20 years past

I thought if this idea when I was 15 or so over 35 years ago and every one I tried to discuss it with thought I was mad . I should have patented the idea

I think this is the key tech to keep big natural aspirated engines (specially sport ones) alive by being competitive in regards of fuel efficiency, performance and most important Reliability thanks to their lower operative complexity compared to turbochaged downsized ones.

Powering sleeping mechanical engine power producing parts is still a waste of power thus fuel . The concept of shutting down cylinders is not elegant .

I am curious, how will this system work when engine becomes 20 years old.

This doesn't show how the valves are deactivated.

You should put decompression valves on the cylinders which can be deactivated. That would reduce the pumping/compression losses.

I disabled this in my 2012 accord 3.5 v6 because I could feel it vibrate. I take 600mile trips and still get over 500miles on a single tank 17gal, highway cruising. No noticeable improvements with eco on 🤷

? Why not just leave the valves open on the deactivated one. Cause now it has to do work to compress the air

Electric Engine is the best solution to Environmental Pollution, especially while it is driven by Solar Energy!!

it's amazing what's going on in a working engine, all in exact syncronicity from one millisecond to the next, and year on year they find ways to improve it still,

But cylinder deactivation will certainly increase the load on crankshaft and can reduce the lifetime of an engine.

Do the cylinders typically take turns deactivation to even out wear on all cylinders? And how does deactivation affect engine balance?

What about pump losses? can the engine run a program with for example, constantly open exhaust valves to reduce pump losses?

You guys should develop a camless piston engine!

I have a question.. Can one control his cylinder deactivation numbers from car computer screen like ones in BMW, Audi & Maclaren?? Say I have a V8 and I want to deactivate 6 cylinders and drive slow only with 2 cylinders even on motorways if I wish, would that possible?
