Set your controls up so that you're constantly accelerating and pressing the up arrow actually lets go of accelerate, that way its easier to turn and use other characters abilities. Then use binds so that pressing the back arrow and a directional button makes you drift so you can actually go around corners. Also, map the B button to a bind that brakes (both triggers) . Good enough for a sequel perhaps?
I always felt bad for Sonic R as I'd played it as a kid and was a great game... crippled by being so short, and also probably horribly imbalanced. I hope someday the idea of a racer with Sonic character AND MECHANICS (not just putting Sonic in Mario Kart) can be revisited and done justice.

Sonic R is a guilty pleasure for me, too. In fact, I played so much that I can beat the game to 100% in 20 minutes, and I attempted to win every race as every character on Hard Mode. I was successful in all but 5 races. Those were: Radiant Emerald as Eggman. Reactive Factory as Tails Doll. Radiant Emerald as Tails Doll. Reactive Factory as Egg Robo. Radiant Emerald as Egg Robo.
