    My father worked at Woolwich Arsenal during the war - he was responsible for keeping the machinery operational, a reserved occupation. He told me about a shadow factory, concealed under a field somewhere in the country side, that production could be transfered if the Arsenal was destroyed. He told me he visited this as part of his duties to ensure it was ready for transfer should it be needed.
    He wanted to show me this factory before he passed away but sadly was unable to locate/remember its exact location. Your video gives me a good idea of what it would of been like...thank you

    So, they built housing on top of these tunnels? when the supports rot away in 20 or thirty years time, and the tunnels collapse, the houses above will drop rapidly into the hole, and in value, lol.

    Great video Chaps spotted the metro boot lid :-) Makes me think why do we not have any bits of these massive factories saved as museums??? The size and scale , we don't even save a tiny bit for our heritage! which is a shame!

      @AverageJoe2020 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is a shame, I was involved in the restoration of a vast underground munitions store for public viewing and exploration. Unfortunately, through the very dodgy and illegal dealings of the property syndicate we were closed down, and the complex was sold off to a secure document storage company, I seem to remember that the last year we were open 50,000 people visited, sad eh?

    Absolutely facinating. I loved the way it turned from dilapidated (but still interesing) ww2 tunnels into bricklined vaults - very Fallout-y!
    On a different but related topic, if you ever do this sort of thing in Mexico, take a flamethower - www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/04/14/massive-spider-red-fangs-discovered-mexican-cave/ . As I was reading this article, I immediately thought of your vidios where you find cave spiders/egg sacks etc!

    Great vid,Walker brothers are or where a civil eng company from Folkstone, however i do not think they were going in ww2 so the stores must be from a later time. also I might have a tip for you , as you leave ashford on the old A20, opposite an housing estate , a railway line is on the right hand side. It runs through a cutting and in that cutting is a platform with large sliding doors. back in the sixties when I did my aprentiseship it was always discribe as storeage/loading area so that Army goods from the REME workshop on the great chart rd could be loaded safe from air attack. and was said to be connected to the wksp by tunnels. I know its now a long time ago but it might be worth checking out on google earth or with cotacts. Its a pitty that back at the end of the sixties no one was interested in ww2 history. keep the good work this stuff will not be around much longer

      @DaveHorgan. 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Raymond Gill also I can't see the shorter names Mart and Daz being in wide use in the 40s at all. Too informal and Daz wouldn't have been used until much later on 😁

    Hi mike Fontaine here again I recognize the brick sections of the tunnels that are backfield I will have to check my records but I think beyond those sections are still under the MOD so beware also there was never any cold war activity down there back soon TTFN.

    32:44 this is the 400 watt sodium light ballast and 4Kv starter. lights like these have a current limiter needed otherwise they go faulty that is why the Brown philips bsn400 block is added.

    The lights at 28.35 are Flame proof lights used in flammable/explosive areas such as Spray booths/Paint stores they would be wireid in using Pyro.

  • @profpep

    Light fittings at 28 min are explosion proof fittings, often used in spray booths or areas where they might have had solvents.

    I think that the area with the signs with various bay numbers was the point where finished parts were put for either inspection, or to be taken to the stores or for dispersal elsewhere. The bay numbers were so that if mistakes were found, their origin was known, and measures could be taken to remedy any problems.

    You really should start going more prepared with things like extra batteries and safety gear plus a set of dry boots and sock.
    Additionally you need to start telling someone where your going.
    That way if you ever get stuck they will know where to look for you.
