  • This historical documentary series was filmed some time ago!
The tunnels today are now locked and are not accessible to the public!
This week folks we head into the underground drain service tunnel that is around 100 feet underground. A tight and claustrophobic tunnel test our limits as we head deeper into the fortification.

I'm a bit claustrophobic... not for elevators and things like that, but for small tunnels and caves. I already heard about people dying by getting stuck in cave tunnels. In my opinion, that's the worst death you can possibly get.

If you're fond of claustrophobic pipe entrances, may I suggest a large abandoned Naval fuel depot in Scotland? The only access is via an 18" wide pipe. The place is as big as a cathedral inside, and the echo is astonishing.

Nice dogs and Englishmen, etc... This has easily been one of your best episodes yet. I always imagine myself along with you on your explores, but this time you'd have lost me at the pipe. Gave me the willies watching that bit, but WOW, what an amazing site. Yes, I also found myself imagining the many people who built the facility, as well as those who manned it when it was active. Splendid! And I hereby nominate Dodd for a full-time member of the IKS team. He's obviously a born explorer. Cheers!

A beautiful dog you got there. I️ was afraid he might step off that second story where the missing floor was in the dark. Can’t stand to see any dogs get hurt. Happy to see he made through without a scratch. Looks like he was having some fun adventuring. Our dog loved to go canoeing and hiking. They are great companions. He died at a ripe old age about 12 years ago. My wife still hasn’t gotten over it. We raised him from a three week old puppy. He at least spent his entire life living on a farm, with plenty of animals to chase and acres to run. The best life for a dog, IMHO.
Great video guys. I’m far too claustrophobic to squeeze through those tunnels, I’m glad there are people like you to GoPro the whole experience, so us afraid of confined spaces can have a bit of an experience. I️ don’t mind telling you, several parts were difficult for me to watch. I️ felt the room was closing in and it was getting hard to breathe. It was no problem for the puppy to move through those tunnels. Good job guys.

Service Tunnel? You mean to tell me the servants had to crawl through that bloody Hole every time someone ordered room service?? It would've taken skill and determination. They would've been a grimy lot. "Brought your egg sir. Anything else? Dirt in it? Forgive me, I'll bring another, coming right up." No wonder they went out of business...

ben wright - What a beautifully surreal mental image your comment gave me. Knowing the absurd lengths the gentry went to to make their servants invisible, it's strangely believable: "You know, Colonel, that your servants are downstairs? Well, I've gone one better - all mine, except me Valet, are in the drains. Had to sack one the other day - turned up here, with me coffee and kedgeree spilt all over the place, covered in rat turds and cobwebs, and had the damned effrontory to stand there in scuffed shoes! I punched him on the nose, and sent him on his way..."

Mar's Spits Bars wasn't a boy. It was a husband/father. Nutty putty caves is like 10 miles from my house. He went through a different opening and ended up getting stuck upside down. The reason being he fit through the hole by sucking in and it compressed his chest cavity. When he tried to wiggle out it caused his chest to expand on the other side and that got him stuck.

Takes me back to my spelunking days when I had no fear and would do things then that I wouldn't even consider doing today. Me and some friends went into a cave once in Tennessee where I came upon a small offshoot tunnel. Of course I had to see where it lead despite all my buddies telling me that I was on my own, they were not going into that tiny passage. So I did what these guys in the video did and stripped off everything except my trousers, T'shirt and boots. The passage was about 150 feet long and near the center it gradually sloped downward. At this low point the passage was half filled with water so I had to keep my head turned to one side or the other or my face would be in water and I wouldn't be able to breath. I remember at the sloping section thinking that maybe I should turn back but then realized that I couldn't turn around and trying maneuver backwards would be nearly impossible considering that everything was wet, muddy and slippery. So I kept inching forward praying that the passage opened up somewhere ahead. The last 30 feet or so was the hardest as the passage became even more narrow. I remember thinking "damn their isn't even enough room to breath in here. The passage became so small that my chest was against the floor, my back against the ceiling and it was about the same on both sides. Taking a full breath was becoming more and more difficult as my chest simply did not have room to expand in that very narrow passage. Finally the passage opened into a large cavern approximately 30x50 feet and a height varying between 3 feet to twenty feet. I yelled to my buddies that I made it through but I also told them do not try come trough. My buddies yelling back at me through that little passage gave me the impression that they were miles away as that cave just kind-of eats sounds. I knew that one guy was smaller than me and he'd be okay if he didn't panic, which he sometimes did, but the other two, if they didn't get stuck it would be a miracle. I spent 20 to 30 minutes checking out the cave section I found. At numerous places in the cave system there were obvious indications of people being there before. In the section that I was in though, there was absolutely no sign that anyone had ever been there before. There was nothing left in there that was man made, no foot prints in the mud, absolutely nothing. It seemed, at the time, that it was worth my effort to find this cavern as it most likely had never been explored before. I checked to see if there were any more passages other than the one I came through but I only found passages that were too small for anyone to go through. Thankfully, coming back out wasn't as tough as getting in, probably because the uncertainty was gone from my mind. When I did that cave I was in my early twenties. That's been 30 or so years ago. I wouldn't even consider doing that now, and besides I wouldn't fit anymore. I never did find out the name of that cave if it even had one. Me and my buddies called it Butt Hole cave due to its many narrow muddy passages. All of it is covered over with a neighborhood now. I wonder if those people living in those nice homes know that there is a cave system under them? I doubt it. Unless you were specifically looking for a cave way back then you wouldn't have found it, and even then it was still easily missed. From the outside it just looked like a small hole in the ground in dense wooded area, like a small sinkhole, which the entrance was. I would love to go spelunking again but I would not take the insane risks I did when I was young. I firmly believe that I have used up all my good luck, most of it that day in that tiny muddy passage.

If you guys think it should be preserved I think you should do something about it! Find out who owns it, get some wheel barrows and start cleaning it out. Find someone to donate paint and paint the walls. Find an engineer who would donate his time to make sure the structure is safe of course. I can see a lot of things that can be done with little money. clearing trees and plants you could also probably find a mason that would be willing to help repair the brickwork. If you could get the support of a major hardware company then you could even start fixing the bathrooms and stuff. It would make a great museum or something to bring tourism to the area.
