    Brilliant, i didnt even know anything like this existed. Why do i pay my tv licence for it to be wasted on absolute crap programmes, when i could be giving it to people like you to fund genuinely interesting videos. Cheers lads.

    Impressed to see (starting at 13:20) how Chris is so nimble a foot. Great video, Ms Leeming's narrative is like bringing sunshine to a cloudy day.

    Amazing film, Ian and Chris. The tunnel is standing up quite well considering its age. Early in my time on TML they opened up the Beaumont tunnel, as the TBMs were to run through iit ( it was in the original 1970's erection chamber for the service tunnel where the new TBM was put together ). That tunnel had some circular rings in place, as far as I can remember and was back filled to allow the machines to pass through. The strata we went through was always referred to as Chalk Marle and was softer than chalk and very sticky but not quite clay. The orange deposit on the wall is ochre and salts. As you say: the work was stopped due to the political situation. Probably just as well , as the ground was very broken further under the channel and would have caused great problems. Still a great achievement. Thanks for sharing.

  • @brianartillery
    @brianartillery 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Brilliant, as always. I think that it has to be one of the eeriest tunnels you've explored. The vibration from the trains must be accelerating the decrepitude of the place. As you say, it probably won't be long before this astonishing bit of Victorian ingenuity vanishes forever. To that end, it would be nice if, say, English Heritage were to remove the 1880 graffiti to preserve it for all to see. Nice one, gents.

    Such crystal clear water, filtered through the rock

    • @aserta
      @aserta 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can't remember where since i watched the documentary on the go in an airport, but there's a cave in Europe where water has filtered down inside, and there's a sizable lake. The water is supposedly so clear (camera lenses sort of lie, so you can't fully know) that you might "walk" in to it and wouldn't know.
      Obviously that was documentary hype, but still, to look at a body of water that's so clear you can see 2 3 meters deep as if nothing is there...that's something.
      I wonder what it tastes like.

    28:50 "Wonder what did they did back in the day to get the water out?" Guys, guys, look at the history of mining, they began to use steam engines to pump water out of mines almost 200 years before this tunnel was started.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yup. Probably one of the old suck and "spit" pumps. I forget their technical name, but you basically have a tube with a single no-valve at the bottom, and a piston with a yes-valve on the head. Piston moves down, valve open, water goes behind it. Piston goes up, yes-valve shuts, no-valve opens, water is dumped to the side of the piston.
      Old and reliable, there's a few of them still working at a farm near me, big ones too, takes a 3 1/2 hp electric motor to power it up.

    • @chrisstacey1984
      @chrisstacey1984 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @aserta

    Qualitat. I think that you're correct in your assessment that most of the sleepers were placed just in case. I can't see this tunnel (especially on the land side) be that weak in their mind to warrant full coverage. Doesn't make it any less dangerous.

    It's is a pity that you did not find the tunnel boring machine, that I found in the early 1980's when I went looking for Churchill's war rooms, which I found still buried in the Chalk near Folkstone. But I do not no if it is still there, or have been dug out, anyway still a good show as I was doing just what you were doing way back then,..
