The main attraction to the pedal is bedroom volumes for most of us. The jcm 800 sounds great with the volume 3 or above. Good luck sitting down and practicing in front of it

@@ilredeldeserto there is already a post PI master volume. a second one doesn't do anything different. The whole point is power tube and transformer saturation which you do not get until the power amp is cranked.. otherwise you just keep playing with preamp only and that is not the sound of a JCM800

As dialed in this demos, I think the pedal had more gain and mids. That JCM800 just sounds great!

Interesting, but...the "clean" tone of the Bassman is very different sounding from the "clean" tone of the JCM800 which effects the way the pedal sounds thru the Bassman compared to how the JCM800 sounds when it's pushed. In this comparison, I think the JM800 sounds way better. The pedal sounds like a pedal, i.e. unnatural.

Eh it doesn’t get too close to the plexi sound. The wampler plexi drive is incredible though. It’s still a little different from the amp but I prefer it a bit more. Amp distortion and pedal distortion are just different I’d say not really better or worse. Just depends what you want.

  • @shakesquire84

The feel and push of real amp gain can’t be simulated by pedals. Not to say pedals are bad, it’s just physically and sonically a completely different approach.

    • @vladzubac5360

you can..but it would require for example to put this Angry CHarlie into a clean Plexi or even a clean JCM800...then you would get that tone!

I have DIY Pedalpcb AT+ clone which sounds great and I can say 95-99% close to the original. Here's what I observed of these JHS gain pedals are they have this bit of mid low flavor but can be useful on some music and can be a balanced sounding pedal too. The original chip has this flutey warm singing sustain that you can hear just like how Andy Timmons' sound.
But here was what I discovered. I tried swapping the chip on my AT+ and used a TL072 chip then whoa, the pedal sounded like a smooth version of BE OD (i have a DIY BE OD too. The mid low thump was less and much clearer. But one downside is this. The original chip intended for AT+ has more low end crunch and more sustain even at 12 o'clock pos compared to the TL072 chip. But that is okay, I can always use a boost pedal like TS to add tightness, low and sustain with TL072.
In the end, I went back using the original chip on my AT+ and instead will build a DIY Angry Charlie v3 with TL072 chips on it. It may somehow come close to the JCM800. Again just a disclaimer: my pedal is a DIY PedalPCB AT+ clone.

Yeah I’d agree with this statement. It’s def a different flavor but it’s just as appealing to me. If I want a jcm800 tone I wouldn’t go to the pedal but if I wanted something a bit more saturated and less bitey that I could switch on my clean amp I’d go with the pedal.

For me original 800 here was a light year ahead of the pedal by tone, the pedal sounded almost like just straight into the mixer - no tasty harmonics, no sparkle, very dull etc. 800 sounded incredible, just perfect. But I blame bassman for that. I have heard lot of great demos of Angry Charlie. But in this demo it sounded very bad and cheap for mt ears. I am really surprised someone liked it over the 800.

@@SergeiVlassov youtube does weird things to the sound anyway. But for me, I use a tube screamer mini into the angry charlie v3 pedal and it sound killer. I have a marshall jvm 205 head that sounds great in large venues but it's just to noisey and open for smaller venues. That's why I use the pedals, they eliminate more of the unwanted elements. Most people use the 800 with a tube screamer or boss super overdrive anyway. But for solos I use an xotic super sweet boost after the AC and that's what makes the solos sing. If I was playing a large venue though, the marshall head is a beast you cant compete with!!

@@grahamkelly8299 I still blame it on bassman. TH-cam does nothing to guitar tone, youtube compression "attacking" high frequencies, not present in a guitar signal anyway. I do some comparisons and demos of the guitar, and when I upload results on TH-cam, I hear the same tone I hear in my raw wav file. But I totally believe that Charlie is a great pedal, it seems that Bassman cut all the fun sparkle here. I myself using at the moment EH Glove pedal or Fender MTG Tube Distortion into "Fender Twin"-style tube preamp, and the mooer radar for IRs. Sounds great. But for example, when I used RAT into Laney Cub 12R with Celestion VIntage, it sounded amazing! But the same pedal into Laney IRT Studio sounded really bad. So the same pedal can sound amazing into one amp, and terrible into another.
