- A short animation I did a few years ago showing off how Camel Spiders, though horrific-looking, are actually pretty tame. I made it because after reading up on them I realized that there were dozens of crazy rumors about them. They do walk up to people, but only to hide in their shadows and escape the hot sun.
That, and they aren't really spiders. They're solifuges which is in the same family as scorpions.

Fun fact camel spiders scream when they chase humans, but it's not because they are mean or hungry....it's cause they are sun sensitive and it hurts them so they run at us while screaming

I laugh but... it is sad... for the scorpion spider insect thing.
They don't actually scream but they do make a sound with their body that sounds like a scream , either way I would still be terrified if that multi-legged abomination came at me with a high pitched screaming sound

When my dad was in the army, he had to do guard duty. When they turned the floodlights on as he started his shift, these things would come rushing into his shadow, and there wasn't much he could do without seeming unprofessional. So he just had about 4 permanent attandants

I honestly think that's where so many of the wives tales about these things come from.
They're actually perfectly harmless and the locals where these things live know that. But they also know marines and tourists DON'T know that. So they'll tell them whatever in order to get a rise out of them for a quick joke. Funny as hell, but then those people come back to the US and tell everyone else about these "screaming, flesh eating 'spiders' that chase you" when in reality they aren't screaming, they are trying to use your shadow for shade, and they struggle to so much as even break skin, let alone even try to bite you at all.
The camel spider is neither a camel nor a spider.
It's in reality a type of guanaco!

@@hartzaden they have no venom. They aren't actually spiders but Solifugids. Still arachnids but not spiders. They have two pairs of razor sharp mouth parts though so their bite will definitely hurt. And joseph leister there is a coyote Peterson video on them lol

@@hartzaden probabaly man. I know the hobo spider (Eratigena agrestis) has a pretty nasty bite just due to secondary infection. Hobo spiders are spiders and do have a mild venom but their bites always seem to cause a gnarly infection, not associated with the venom, for whatever reason.
He got biten by one like last year. It didn't even brake the skin.

Robby Espinoza The Camelspiders top speed I believe was 18 or 19 mph. It doesn't harm humans, and even if it did bite you for whatever odd reason, it wouldn't feel like a small sting.

Fun fact: The "camel spider" is not exactly a spider/arachnid, but a member of the Solifugae class in that family, which are not classified as true scorpions or spiders (close, but with key differences). They have 8 legs with the two false legs at the front to serve as antennae.
The good news is that their bite is not venomous; they crush their prey with sheer force and don't need a toxin for defense.
Their name also translates to (loosely) "Those That Hide From The Sun", so you will commonly find them in shady areas. Shocking at first, but try to be calm when you see them and use a bucket to lure them in and release them where another shady area is, like a rock outcrop.

How to get yelled/laughed at for an hour by your CO 101: Step 1: Have arachnophobia. Step 2: Never have heard/seen a camel spider. Step 3: Be your squads S.A.W.(squad automatic weapon) Step 4: Be afraid of jump scares. Step 5: Not notice camel spider till it is less then 4 ft away from you. Step 6: Use 30 rounds on said camel spider in panic. Step 7: Notice your that your entire squad was behind you and saw everything and your CO was the guy closest behind you.(was on point) Step 8: Feel ashamed that you just panicked while on point. Step 9: Feel accomplished that every single one of those 30 rounds you used hit that spider.
My squad mates will never let me live this down and tell everyone they meet the above story.

For those here who don't know what they're talking about, camel spiders are not spiders (clearly they do not have eight legs which all spiders have) and do not use any kind of poison or venom to kill their prey. Instead they use their mandibles to saw their prey apart limb by limb. They do however have a nasty bite that can have the appearance of being venomous but are really not.

The most horrifying experience I’ve had with a camel spider was when I went to the garage to put on my hiking boots, I found one just living in my boot right as I was about to put it on. It was just sitting there, chilling. So I chucked the boot across the garage and grabbed a hose and washed my boot til it disappeared. *disappeared* I dunno where it went and it haunts me

1% Actually recognizes that it isn't a spider, but a solpugid. Solpugids are not spiders, but part of the order Solifugae of the class Arachnida. They are not scorpions, nor spiders, but are closer in relations with scorpions rather than spiders.

I remember hearing a story from a Vet that described how they viewed Camel Spiders, when him and his squad were preparing to patrol an area they found a large next of camel spiders under the truck so they called it in and the soldier on the other end was extremely prepared to help them out, so after about 20 minutes the soldier who was on the line shows up... with a flame thrower. He then proceeded to burn all the camel spiders in the nest while the squad just watched with enjoyment.
I remember this animation. I'm watching this is in 2020 when he last time I saw it was like it 2013.
