    Sound is one of the most important aspects of video production. This video demonstrates how to connect 2 mics or audio inputs to a camera that has 2 XLR inputs. I use a Canon XA series camera to show how to mix and match mics for optimal sound. Incidentally, while recording the camera with my lav. mic cut out, so you can hear the audio change as different types of mics are used. The video is designed for the beginner to understand how to get better audio from a camera.

    Thank you so much Sterling! I had a XH-A1S before and only bought the XA30, because the new laptops don't have a fireware to transfer from HDV tape. Miss the manual controls of my XH so much! I had no problems using the internal MIC and my oldie-but-still-goodie MK-66 Sennheiser (about 20 years old and used very frequently!), but never succeeded to get my new Rode NTG-1 working on the XA-30. Your tutorial is very helpful!

    So awesome! I have a shotgun mic and wireless lav mics with 3.5. If at an event and I can't get to the mixer I assume internal mic is best. I assume my NT2 is best use with a one person interview. I may have answered my own question in regards to when to use what but why two xlrs and and one 3.5? The reason I ask is for shooting two person interviews with my wires mics. If I had two 3.5's I could record both people into one camera. My question, best way to maximize a two person interview. I guess I could use an xlr microphone to pass around in combination with built in.

    @Sterling Miller I will be shooting a Christmas program at a church with 2 of my pro-line Camcorders. I will be using a Panasonic DVX100a and a Sony PD-170. I'm planning on mounting the Sony on a tripod because I have a wide angle lense for it to get Max coverage. I'll be using the Panasonic as a run and gun and both cameras have shotgun mics attached to them. The church has a soundboard and I plan on using XLR to Jack into the soundboard. Should I use the shotgun mic on the Sony in conjunction with the soundboard or would I be overloading the camera with audio? Also, what are your thoughts on using the shotgun mic and the built in mic together on the run and gun Panasonic ? Should I just use the shotgun mic?

    • @sterlingteaches
      @sterlingteaches  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are streaming live, I would get the audio straight from the board and possibly one of the camera mics (for audience sound like clapping)
      If you are recording and going back to edit I would check to see if your camcorders record to separate channels-- I looked up Sony PD-170 it says that it records two channels I didn't see info on the Panasonic but I think it does 2 channels as well. So shotgun mic record to 1 channel on Sony and soundboard record to other channel would be a good combo.
      If Panasonic does record two channels do one channel shotgun and one channel built in. Then when you are editing you can choose which channel sounds best-- if it only records to one channel do shotgun as it will produce better sound than on board mics and won't pick up every bump or camera zoom sound.
      After you record look up multi-camera editing and you can sync up the videos to make editing a lot easier. Multi camera is available in major editors like Premiere pro CC, Final Cut, or Vegas.
      Good luck with the project.

    You are a life saver! i have an xa30 and you can't imagine how i have struggled to record sound on it. I only use a rode shotgun mic on it, i never knew you can combine with the onboard mic and have two different tracks. Thanks a million! I have learned a lot in 30 min than all the time i spent trying to understand what the manual was saying. I have searched som many times for some goo tutorials on how to set up sound on these cameras, nothing compares to your detailed explanation, fantastic job.
    If i may ask, the only time you can combine the onboard mic is when you have an xlr connected, or can you use it together with a MIC in?

    Thanks for the video and helpful instructions.I have just obtained a XA30 for doing music gigs etc. Is it possable to get a custom mic set up on the internal mic, and a shotgun on other chanel as the AGC on the internal mic (auto) is quite aggressive and not a lot of light and shade on the audio levels. Or only a custom set up on internal mic and use say a Zoom H1 and mix/sync in post.

    • @sterlingteaches
      @sterlingteaches  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, see page 81, 82 of the manual gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/6/0300023666/01/xa30-35-im2-p-en.pdf You can plug in a shotgun in xlr input 1 and then plug in a different mic/audio source using a 3.5mm into the mic on the body of the camera. In the menu I can't remember where right now, you set input 1 to be channel 1 and input to to be internal mic, but if you have the 3.5mm plugged in it will use that instead of the internal mics. Hope that helps.

    • @backporchpicker
      @backporchpicker 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the prompt reply. I will try pluging in a shotgun in xlr input 1 and a wireless receiver into the 3.5 input, with sender connected to Zoom H1, as sometimes in small venues where the camera shoots from, is not ideal for the audio. It appears that when the xa30 is set up useing "custom" audio for the internal mics only, when you change to use xlr shotgun input 1 and channel 2 for internal mic (page 88) , the internal mic reverts to auto level. ( My fault, should have read the notes on page 89 ! ie For INTMIC setting, Built-in mic/MIC channel 2, audio scene sets to STD Standard: meaning AGC level) so maybe will try a custom audio set up on internal mic and use a recording thats recorded on manual on a seperate external Zoom H1, and mix/sync in post, which keeps all audio tracks on manual levels.

    Hi! My school bought the same camera for recording teachers' lessons. Video quality is superb but the built-in mic, not that good. I recntly bought a BOYA BY-MM1 Universal Cardioid Microphone to work with my android phone. I used the cable meant to connect it to the canon camcorder via the mic input but it doesn't work! Would appreciate your advice on this. Perhaps its a hardware issue? I recommend getting a powered mic for the sound to come out well--I have not had success with non-powered mics. You can get a mic that runs off a battery or if the camera has the handle with the sound inputs you can use Phantom power to ower the mic. I use an shotgun mic plugged into the xlr input of the camera and the mic gets power from the +48v button. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1348543-REG/azden_sgm_250cx_shotgun_microphone.html Here's one that uses a battery for power: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/444022-REG/Azden_SMX_10_SMX_10_Stereo_Microphone.html I haven't tried that one, but seems like a good one. I also use these wireless mics for recording teachers www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1485363-REG/audio_technica_u851rb_cardioid_boundary_mic_black.html I give the teacher the lavalier mic to clip on. My go-to mic for recording a teacher is the shotgun first mentioned in this post. I can stand at the back of the room and point the camera at the teacher and get good sound. It costs more than the Boya mic, but if it is in the price range a powered Shotgun mic (either phantom power--better or Battery powered-still good) are my recommendation.

    Sterling:
    In your opinion, would it be possible to set up 3 external mics on a 2 Channel input Camcorder?
    1 mic for left, 2nd mic for right, and a third tapped into one of the two, for center channel?
    The idea is to capture a stage show in stereo, with a 3rd mic, to capture center. (Without using a mixer)

    • @sterlingteaches
      @sterlingteaches  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Without using a mixer, I don't think it would work. As far as I know the cameras only have 2 inputs and 2 channels. Unless your specific camera has a way to bring in 3 audio channels.

    • @sterlingteaches

      That is a new issue to me. I don't have experience with that so I can't really offer a solution. My only recommendations are to try different xlr cables and try the input 1. If that doesn't work you might contact the manufacturer of the mic/ camera to see if they have a solution.

    • @sterlingteaches
      @sterlingteaches  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like XLR because I have the fewest issues using them. Anoter way is to use RCA from the rec out but according to this article XLR can go greater distances: www.audioaffair.co.uk/blog/xlr-vs-rca-interconnects-is-there-a-difference/
      Typically the XLR cables are balanced cables , but the 1/4" may or may not be. www.sweetwater.com/forums/showthread.php?34238-XLR-vs-1-4-balanced
      I like XLR because I have better XLR cables than other cables and I can control the audio easier using the buttons on the handle and I can go longer runs. The cables seem to do better for us. If you have a local music store you might stop in and ask them to explain the difference further, they probably sell both kinds.
      Hope that helps.

    • @sterlingteaches
      @sterlingteaches  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a couple of variables to look at. 1) is your mixer sending out stereo or mono audio? 2) If it is sending out stereo make sure that your 1/4 cable is a stereo cable it will have two black lines on the metal tips. 3) your camera may have a built in feature to switch mono to dual mono or stereo--check your user manual--google your camera model and manual and you should find it online. The camera I show here allows audio to be recored to both tracks if it is input through the xlr channel one if you have that camera model (See page 89 of thisgdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/4/0300021494/02/xa30-35-im2-n-en.pdf ) I think looking through your camera's manual will be your best resource.

      I can't recommend a specific setting to reduce background noise. I usually set the audio input to manual and then I lower the volume so that no background noise is there when no one is talking. You could also try changing the cable that you have the mic plugged into. I recommend using a balanced cable, www.sweetwater.com/insync/cable-buying-guide/ some of my cheap xlr cables are not balanced and have caused issues for me in the past.

      I recommend reading through the manual, www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/camcorders/professional/xa11/xa11?tab=manuals
      Page 72 talks about connecting external microphones. If your mic has 3.5mm jack you might want to have the input terminal on the camera set to off when you plug it into the mic port. You can also take off the handle and try the mic without it. If your mic has XLR connection read the pages after 72 and experiment with the settings listed.
