    How do you power a preamp when you're outside shooting?

    • @BandH
      @BandH  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jorge Aguilera - The Sound Devices MM-1 is a single channel,portable microphone preamp and headphone monitor designed for monitoring sound for film (boom operators), broadcast and ENG, field recording, voice over and corporate / industrial environments. The mic preamp features exceptional audio quality with a dynamic range exceeding 120dB and an audio bandwidth of 10Hz to50kHz.
      The balanced XLR microphone input provides user switchable +48V, 12V and 12V-T phantom power. A separate balanced monitor input accepts balanced or unbalanced line level signal. The 1/4" TRS headphone output is capable of monitoring microphone signal, external line level signal or a mix of both. A 3-position low cut filter switch eliminates noise below 80Hz and 160Hz. The compact unit features a belt clip and is powered with 2 AA batteries or external DC power source. bhpho.to/1mhNpYa

      I have a Tascam DR-60D MkII. It runs on four AA batteries or USB power. I have spare batteries and a USB-charger with me and use a powerbank for external power when I have to do recordings that exceed the three to four hours of battery life of this preamp/recorder.

    Hi there, great video and huge thanks for the useful tips. I’m going to ask such a noob question so please excuse me. You said in the video that once you’re connected the XLR mic to the Beacktek audio adapter, you will then need a 1/8 inch mini Jack to connect the BeachTek adapter to the DSLR. Could you please tell me exactly what spec that mini jack is please or a link to one as I have no idea what I’m looking for. Many thanks in advance.

    If you are using Magic Lantern on a Canon DSLR, do you still need the AGC-off feature of the XLR adapters?

      Although we cannot support Magic Lantern, it is my feeling that the AGC disabling would not be needed.

    I have a question I am planning to buy a Sennheiser MKH 416 and use that on top of my Canon 80D will I be able to connect the mic and the camera directly or do I need some kind of amplifier or SLR adaptor for best possible audio quality

    • @BandH
      @BandH  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You will need a DSLR audio adapter: The RA222 Riggy-Assist Dual-XLR Preamplifier with Phantom Power and Metering by juicedLink is designed for cameras that don't have integrated audio meters, manual gain control, or a headphone output. The RA222 features two 4-segment meters which can be calibrated to the camera, an 1/8" mono headphone output and an AGC disable switch.
      The RA222 features 2 locking XLR inputs with low-noise microphone preamplifiers. Each channel includes a Mic/Line level switch, a Hi/Lo gain switch, and a Phantom power switch. The onboard Phantom power voltage is selectable between 48V/12V. The inputs can also be summed mono, copying each input to both sides. The right channel can be completely powered down to conserve battery power if it is not needed.
      When engaged, the Audio Output Bracketing feature of the RA222 ensures that your audio inputs won't clip or distort. By placing the RA222's performance in mono and enabling the 16dB pad on the right channel, you end up with two signals with identical content, yet the right is recorded 16dB lower. This way if a sudden loud noise or a boomy portion of audio is recorded, you'll have a backup track with headroom in case the 0dB output clips.
      The RA222 Riggy-Assist is powered by a 9V battery. High capacity lithium-polymer rechargeable batteries can be used as well as alkaline. The low-battery indicator can be switched between alkaline or lithium-polymer threshold, so you can use either chemistry without leaving unnecessary capacity in the battery. bhpho.to/2h6OjrX >Mark

      @BandH  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Phoebe Nguyen An isolated mic plugged into the camera will give you the audio over the video and does not require syncing. However, doing a quality voice over over requires being in a studio as ambient noise would be a factor in the field. *Christina* AskAudio@bhphoto.com

    I really wish the DXA-SLR-Pro was cheaper...I'm using the AT897 and need to hook it up to the Nikon D5100. I have a beach audio transformer adapter from an earlier set up, and it does not work. If I buy the Sescom SES-TR-153, it will work right? I can drown most of the hiss from the camera's pre-amp out in post. Please respond, and awesome video! :) Can't wait for part 3.

    What's a good mic to record loudspeakers..the speakers have drive units that are scattered on the front of the cabinet. I wish to make a stereo recording of music through the loudspeakers. The speakers are spaced about 6ft apart and the listening position could be around 6 or 8 ft away. My camcorder is a Panasonic hcx900m

      Connect a RODE Stereo VideoMic Pro (B&H # ROSVMP) which builds on the success of the Rode VideoMic Pro & Stereo VideoMic with improved stereo reproduction, sound quality and ergonomic design. The Stereo VideoMic's capsule feature a matched pair of 1/2" cardioid condenser capsules, mounted in a coincident X/Y position for accurate stereo imagery and detail. The microphone's small, ergonomic footprint features an integrated shock mounting system for superior isolation from vibration and mechanical noise. The multi-strand output cable is terminated with a 1/8" (3.5mm) output connector and delivers significantly lower noise transference than traditional audio cable.
      The included shoe mount features an integrated shockmount system for even further protection against handling noise. The Stereo VideoMic features a high pass filter switch at 75Hz for minimizing low frequency noise, and a -10dB Pad for maximizing headroom for capturing loud signals without distortion. The +20dB level boost switch is specifically designed to provide a higher quality signal with DSLR cameras. When activated, camera preamp level is reduced, resulting in a lower noise floor and much clearer recording. bhpho.to/Oq1g8u

      Depending upon the line output configuration of your recorder, this attenuation cable might work:
      The Kopul ACDR-35 Line-to-Mic Attenuator Cable (B&H # KOACDR35) is designed to connect your digital recorder output to the mic level input of your DSLR camera with 35dB of attenuation to step down the hot line level audio to microphone level. It is shielded to reduce RF noise from cell phones and provide interference-free operation.

    I'm really fixed on getting the Canon 70D but it doesn't have a headphone jack - I'm looking to make short documentaries so I need to be able to hear through headphones. All microphones can be provided through university but I need a mic and headphone adapter... This seems like the thing you mentioned in the last section of the video but it seems very pricey. • @BandH
      @BandH  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most DSLR or mirrorless cameras do not provide a headphone output.
      This is a relatively low cost solution:
      The Beachtek MCC-2 2-Channel Audio Adapter and Bracket (B&H # BEMCC2) is designed to attach to your DSLR camera and allows you to send two mono or one stereo audio source to your camera's audio input. It has two mono 1/8" inputs with individual trim control knobs as well as a stereo 1/8" input. A mono/stereo switch controls whether the two mono or one stereo input is active. It connects to your DSLR camera via a 1/8" stereo mini-jack output, and works ideally with cameras that have a headphone output to allow you to monitor your audio.
      The body of the MCC-2 has three integrated mounting shoes to attach a variety of mics or wireless receivers to the unit. The MCC-2 itself will fit on any DSLR or camcorder that has a standard mounting shoe. It has passive operation, and thus requires no batteries or power source.

    Would a Sescom cable plug into a zoom h1?

    • @BandH
      @BandH  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes - a Sescom cable could be used with a Zoom H1 recorder. The LN2MIC-ZMH4N-6 from Sescom is a problem solving cable for users of HDSLRs who are using a Zoom H4N or Zoom H1 as a secondary audio recording source. Many professional DSLR cameras have unbalanced stereo microphone level audio inputs on a mini TRS 3.5mm jack. The Samson Zoom H4N or H1 output line level audio signals. This cable provides the proper microphone levels and preserves the delicate connector contacts inside the camera, allowing users to go directly from the audio recorder into the camera. B&H # SEL2MZH4N6

  • @BandH
    @BandH  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The audio interface will output a line level signal. You can use a Pro Co Sound LMX In-Line Barrel XLR Mic to 1/4" Line Level Adapter (B&H # PRLMX) and then an adapter to convert the XLR output to a 1/8" mini (3.5mm) connector. The Kopul LMT100 connects a microphone into a high-impedance 3.5mm mini input found on DSLRs (B&H # KOLMT100). Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. Anyone have any suggestion for VERY loud, indoor live performances. I am looking to record shows for local bands and my Rode Mic pro just can't handle it. I have actually been better off using the internal mic on my DSLR, but I am looking to get some real professional sounding performances. Any thoughts?

      This is an excellent, short-shotgun mic that handles high SPL's and will not break the bank. You will need a mount and cable for DSLR on-camera use.

    I'll assume you are referring to the Panasonic GH3. The VP83 LensHopper Shotgun Microphone from Shure is a compact camera-mount condenser that provides detailed, high-definition audio with DSLR cameras. An integrated Rycote Lyre shock mounting system provides isolation from vibration and mechanical noise. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. Mark S.

      You dont have too many options, but by the audio technica at2020 or the mxl770. But I would reccomend saving up for at least the 2035 or a rode nt1 off of ebay

    Hi crew at B and H!
    I am planning on investing in an audio kit to use with my Canon 600D DSLR to make short films. Currently, I am looking at the Rode NTG-2 shotgun microphone with the Zoom H6 recorder (I would sync up my audio with my video in post). The total of those two items is my approximate budget.
    Do you think this is a good combination to use for my short films? I have also heard that the Tascam DR-70D is a good recorder.
    The main things I am looking for are minimal noise in audio and usability.
    If you could please tell me if my combination is a good one, and if not, could you please suggest a compatible recorder and microphone.
    Thanks,
    Thomas

      Fine choices! We have hundreds, if not thousands of customers employing this same combination currently. The Tascam DR70D is very good as well - but offers a different form factor than the zoom H6. It lends itself very well for tripod mounting below the camera. bhpho.to/1wYk7Rr

    Long time watcher first time commenter. So we are a small hobbiest channel for friends and family, we recently upgraded to a Nikon d5600 and bought the rode micro and an extension 3.5mm cable to set up when we do podcasting or fun family video challenges. We notice that the pre amps in the camera are pretty shotty and quiet the guess work. We can set the volume manually and it will sound great when talking normal but when we laugh or shout (if playing a game) it peaks/clips so we turn down the volume in post, or if we turn down the mic on the camera a notch it is quiet in normal talking but the loud parts are fine. Is an interface something I need to keep the volume levels great and keep it from clipping? The mic is currently about 3-4 ft away as sometimes we have things on the table in front of us we would like to show. Thanks!!

    The Sennheiser MKE 600 is a shotgun mic designed for use with a camcorder. It takes on even the toughest video sound challenges, while still being compact and short relative to previous models. B&H # SEMKE600. The juicedLink RA222 Riggy-Assist Dual-XLR Preamplifier will allow you to connect two XLR mics: B&H # JURA222. If you are within 15 feet or less - use a shotgun mic like the Rode NTG-2 (B&H # RONTG3) or the Sennheiser MKE 600 (B&H # SEMKE600). For even better audio results, pair either mic with a boom pole positioned just outside the shot but close to your subjects. You can use the Beachtek - DXA-SLR PRO HDSLR Audio Adapter (B&H# BEDXASLRPRO) and two wired lavalier mics: AUDIO-TECHNICA AT803B (B&H # AUAT803). Or you can use a couple of handhelds: Electro-Voice - RE50/B - Omni-Directional Handheld Dynamic Shock Mounted ENG. (B&H# ELRE50B). Our Pearstone LMT100 (B&H # PELMT100) cable enables a microphone to be input into the 3.5mm mini input found on DSLR cameras. It is 1.5' long and has a 3-pin XLR female connector on one end and a standard 3.5mm stereo mini plug on the other. It is designed for use with mono microphones. so why would someone spend $200+ on an external recorder over getting something like the beachtek riggy that does the same thing but plugs straight into the dslr???

    • @BandH
      @BandH  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      A dedicated audio recorder is designed specifically to record quality audio. You are able to record digital audio at higher resolutions than available on a DSLR. DSLR audio recording is a secondary feature and lacks the control and monitoring capabilities as well. Even when using an external audio adapter such as the Beachtek, you are recording to the inferior components available in the camera. |Heather S|

    You need the Sescom SES-TR-153 XLR to Right Angled Mini Microphone Cable (B&H # SESTR153). This cable features a standard XLR female input and a right-angled 1/8" (3.5mm) mini male output connection. Low to high impedance matching "steps up" the microphone level, and its RFI shielding eliminates noise from cellphones, etc. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. hello, i recently bought a canon t5 to start getting into photogrphy and film. buuut i found out that the t5 does not have a microphone mini jack... so i started looking for solutions and was wondering.
    Can i use a usb to microphone jack adapter for my t5 to attach external mic?
    in case you dont know the adapter im talking about here it is i00.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v0/1597480718/16cm-Male-Female-Micro-USB-to-3-5mm-Jack-Mic-Microphone-Adapter-Cable-for-GoPro-Hero.jpg

    • @BandH
      @BandH  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately you cannot use a GoPro or any other USB adapter . The only option would be to record a separate audio file with a recorder and sync it up in post: You could use a Tascam DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder which provides professional-level features and flexibility in a compact and durable design that's ideal for use in the field. (B&H # TADR40) bhpho.to/1IBFvQB.
      To sync the audio with your camera's video, use PluralEyes 3.5 from Red Giant, an electronic download of software for automatically syncing double system audio with video. PluralEyes 3.5 is compatible with both Mac and Windows platforms. The software imports your footage into its own timeline and automatically syncs the video from a single or multiple cameras to simultaneously recorded audio. Automatic syncing is accomplished by the software lining up the audio waveforms of the audio and video files, so for PluralEyes to work you must record an audio scratch track with your video footage. PluralEyes is able to import/export timelines from/to Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, Media Composer, and Vegas Pro. You can also export .mov or .avi media files for use in other programs. The new Sennheiser MKE600 (B&H# SEMKE600K1) is a great overall shotgun mic, that you can mount on your Canon 60D. But I would highly recommend using an external audio recorder, like the new Tascam DR60D (B&H# TADR60D) to get the most of that mic.
