Dil Chahta hai. I'll tell you why this movie was soo good. Akash's dad calls him when he's in Australia when akash is all upset about the girl... "hey akash kaise ho beta?", Akash "mein theek hoon dad" * sniffs * , "beta is everything alright?", "aise baat nahin hai dad, kaam mein busy rehta hoon so", "beta, Akash......Beta tum wapas aao, I want you to come back".
THAT SCENE RIGHT THERE PEOPLE. the emphasis on the word "BETA". You don't see the connection between both of em in the whole movie and then this is dropped. There you go. This is exactly how my father would react. It takes a crack in the voice for you're dad to know something's not right. Life's not like Kabhi khushi kabhi gham where my mom figures im getting off the bus in brindavan society, thane. A father mate. A father.

Another observation I made about the movie that underscores that all the 3 characters are different and important in their own ways are their names: Akash (meaning sky), Sameer (meaning air) and Siddharth (the closest name to dharthi, meaning earth)

ID/ego/super-ego analysis is interesting
I am from small town and I watched this movie with my friends when I was in 12th std. I was the only one who loved this movie among my friends at that time. After watching your analysis I can say we subconsciously try to relate ourselves when we find something we wish to be or believe we are belong to it.

To this day, Dil Chahta remains my favourite movie of all time (both Bollywood and Hollywood). I was only 9 years old when I first watched it, but I have a DVD copy of it, which I pop in from time to time just to laugh, and reminisce upon the simple and wonderful things in life - such as friendship, and love. Fantastic work, with this analysis! I really hope we see more films like DCH!

I think you missed a major motif present in the film. In nearly every shot containing the 3 characters, sameer is always placed in the middle of akash and Sid , further symbolising his role as the ego.

Dil Chahta Hai was really a beautiful and also way ahead of its time film, i have watch it maybe more than 30 times but still i'm not bored of it, that film has the entertainment at its own way, Really a watchful cinema ❤️
I genuinely agree with you here on one point. Farhan Akhtar was really a gifted director and after Lakshya I was eagerly waiting for his next film. Public was waiting for his next original, & fresh movie, but then came Don and Don 2.
He had much potential but he decided to waste it on movies like Shadi ke side-effects.

Sync sound is another thing Farhaan used so well in DCH. Just love the movie. Yes you are right, the second half has scope of a crispier edit, a 20 minutes less cutting of some drama viz the marriage scene.

I really appreciate your effort to bring out the true essence and underlying factors of Indian cinema/global cinema! Farhan Akhtar is by far one of the most talented and most creative film makers of our country! Too bad there are hardly any films from his pocket that could grab the attention like 'Dil Chahta Hai', one of my all-time favourites. He knows or at least tries to know what strikes the right cord at the right moment.

The comparison of Akash, Sameer and Sidhharth to Freud's Id, Ego and Superego was absolutely brilliant. So insightful! The dynamic and conflict-filled relationships between the 3 main male characters and their respective parents is yet another example of the complexity of this film. It serves to add to the characterisation of the central male trio. Akash is always shown to be emotionally distant from his parents just as the Id is so distant from the conscious mind. But that much needed father-son bond is certainly present in the depths and comes to surface when Akash talks to his father on the phone from Sydney and his father senses the disturbance in Akash when his voice breaks. Akash is never shown to have spoken seriously and openly about his deep-seated feelings, he rarely addresses his emotional issues, which really makes his character represent the Id which is like a vast ocean of all those unaddressed and unconscious emotions. Only an internally conflicted and dilemma-ridden girl like Shalini can be suitable for Akash, who is capable of bringing out the his emotional depths to the surface. If one were to search in the Id which is a storehouse of the most basic and primal elements, the unconscious and the hidden, it would be quite a quest. Akash's initial refusal to accept the existence of love and the refusal to believe that he too is capable of falling in love and the later admittance that he has fallen for Shalini represents that very quest and search within the vast emotional storehouse of Id. Akash, on the surface, appears to have it all, the wealthy background, the good looks, the charming personality, the sassy wit and the popularity in college years. But there is something missing and only the audience is made to sense that. His unconscious quest for that hidden, missing element of himself which he, envitably, finds in Shalini symbolizes, all the more, why he represents the Id. The bond with Sameer and his parents is funny and cute to watch but also highlights the practicality of his parents' perspective of life. Sameer's mother wants Sameer to get married to the daughter of the old couple who are their long-time friends and who come from the same social circle as them. Sameer's mom casually retorts "toh kya hua? Tumhare dad aur meri shaadi bhi toh arranged thi." Since the ego is less passionate and more practical than the Id and the superego, we get a glimpse of how Sameer's character has been raised in a practical environment that emphasizes the realistic aspects of life. Siddharth and his mother on the other hand, share a prickly yet a strong bond. His mother is always concerned about him and time & again, this concern changes to unwanted prying and probing on his mother's part as Sid irritatedly says "Haa Maa lekin kuch baatein aise hoti hai jo share nahi kii jati."
My favorite part of the movie is when Tara analyzes his paintings and manages to hit the nail on the head and discovers things about Sid which his own mother was unable to do. This, further, clinches in how Tara and Siddharth's relationship is perfect. But perfectionism itself is an ideal that can never be reached just as the idealistic realm of the Superego, thus, resulting in a heart-wrenching end when Tara dies. Sid's unconditional love for Tara, the nature of their idealistic and "un-named" relationship, Sid's love of art and painting all show how Sid represents the Superego. It's all so beautifully intricate. So much so that even their bedrooms, costumes, choice of women, over-all lifestyle, etc. highlight the differences in their characters. Sameer being the ego plays a more balanced role of the mediator between the ever-conflicting Id(Akash) and Superego(Sid).
So the three psychological agents of Freud are represented in the movie by the main trio(Akash, Sameer & Sid) to not only carry the plot of this character-oriented movie forward but to also highlight the humaneness of the male camaraderie that the 3 of them share which is becomes absolutely essential to bring about a sense of completeness and balance. Even if a single friend of trio were to disappear, there would be incompleteness. We see that imbalance occuring due to the constant ebb and flow in the friendship that the 3 share, we sense the imbalance when they fight, have disagreements or go apart just as the normal human individual would be incomplete if one of the 3 principles (Id, ego and superego) were to disappear. In that sense, this movie is also a coming-of-age or bildungsroman.
I like how self aware you are about sounding pretentious and how at the apt time you bring back the analysis from a psychological perspective to relatable content. Kudos! Keep doing what you do!

Just watched Dil Chaahta hai for the first time. It's 2023. I'm 21. The movie is 22. I've graduated this year from college and this movie still holds as much ground as it did back then. While the movie certainly has its flaws, which I'm too inexperienced and young to notice, I am absolutely taken aback by the cinematic masterpiece it is. Came to your video after watching it and I loved the video as well. Thank you.

Enjoyed the review and I'm very excited to watch it tonight!. Have been exploring indian cinema in the last few months. What are your favourite Indian films? So far I would say Salaam Bombay is the most perfectly balanced and raw. Dev D similar to SB, Swades innocent, wholesome and heartwarming, 3 Idiots creative and playful, Agantuk The Stranger simple and conversationally interesting, Nayak The Hero similarly conversationally gripping & Drishyam remake was a fun and clever journey. Oh I think Apur Sansar is the most tragic so far. Also Piku was great fun, road movies always are. Kabhi Kabhie I think has the best soundtrack i've heard of classical and love song. The Lunchbox and Udaan were fantastic human stories.
Love to find films that merge all facets of indian cinema from bollywood to realism. Keep up the interesting reviews. Thanks

Great stories are made from the very essence of life. Therefore it includes real characters that we encounter in real life, making it more appealing & relatable. There's not much need of psychoanalysis here. We've all seen many characters & characters like these in our lifes, so does Farhan. Only difference is, everybody SEES but an artist OBSERVES. The talent of keen observation is the golden quality for anybody that deals with art & Farhan is definitely one of those. Anybody who've the ability to go into details & analyse deep is a powerful creator, including the guy who made this video. After all the one who dig deep is the one who finds the treasure.
