Blending the 6 Greatest Guitar Speakers in a Marshall Stack!

  • I'm putting the 6 most influential hard rock rock guitar speakers in the same Marshall Stack to get the ultimate tone! :-)
    The speakers are:
    1971 Celestion G12H30 55Hz Greenback
    1983 Celestion G12-65
    1990 Celestion G12T-75
    1989 Celestion V30 Marshall
    1989 EVM 12L
    197X JBL D120F
    These speakers really complement each other and the combined tone is huge! The amp is 1977 Marshall Superbass modded into the #39 SIR studios mod (Appetite for destruction) and the guitar is a 1975 Gibson Flying V. I'm only using close mics here.

    Hey Johan, brilliant idea and excellent execution, as always ;). Generally speaking I found the first combinations (roughly until 3.30) a bit muddy compared to the single speakers, however 2.15 G12H/EVM12L stands out, 4.55 combination is great (distict, punchy, beefy, not muddy), 5.45 is the ultimate Van Halen tibute :)) although for the less popular tones of EVH. I strongly agree to something another commentator said: every studio schould have on of these stacks to make a perfect blend . cheers

    Hi Johan, did you ever tried the Jimi Hendrix Plexi Mod? Supposedly a modification Jimi Hendrix used to carry out on all his Marshall 100w amps was to change the tone stack to a 33k/500pf resistor and capacitor combination, provided the amp didn’t already have this tone stack. This rumour was verified when the owner of the JTM 45/100 used extensively by Jimi Hendrix was given to Marshall by a Mr. Dickinson who bought the amp after Jimi’s death, and it was found to contain this sole modification.
    Assuming your JTM 45/100 or similar early 100w Marshall amp has the 56k/250pf tone stack combination, you have to change that replacing 66k to 33k and the 250pf to 500pf. If you have a comparative video of this mod can you send me the link? thank you.

    The G12H30 (55) sounded dreadfully fizzy. Which surprises me because I have a Heritage-series G12H30 (75) - ie the version with the lighter "lead" cone. I think it sounds lovely - it has a distant woody sort of tone, and very different to the G12H Anniversary, which is an articulate, punchy speaker. I have one of each in a big 2x12 cab. The G12H (75) most certainly is NOT fizzy when used with an overdriven amp (Matamp C7). In fact, the G12H (55) on test here is so bad, I'm wondering if it isn't damaged?

  • @patrickwilson623

    It's easy to see why EVH and Dickey Betts liked to use JBL speakers, although on its own, it's a bit too shrill. It does give the right amount of sizzle when used with another warmer speaker.
    I think I like the Greenback with the EVM12L best. Nice combination for sure. It seems to cover a lot of bases with only two speakers.

    Some of the speakers don't sound good to me without being specific, though I must admit, in a mix it could be a different story. It makes me wonder some times when I have my amp cranked in the studio, not mic'k, and it sounds fantastic, what if it doesn't sound as good mic'k. I prefer the tight sound of an amp closet and my studio does not have one, though I might be able to create an environment sounding similar. Thank you for the content. I love learning.

  • @TimpBizkit

    I think the only problem is you'd have to parallel them all to get an accurate frequency response (one speaker's higher impedance in the chain could affect the power going to different speakers with different impedance curves) and then the impedance would be too low for the amp, so then you'd need a separate amp channel for each speaker.

    @wrayven 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cool comparison to show how mixing speakers can get awesome guitar sounds. I assume you were using the same mics placed at the same point of each speaker(near the center of voice coil or towards the edge?). For my needs I liked the 65 & the EVM-12L best on their own, but really loved the mix of the G12H-30 with the EVM-12L. That captured the crispness with some lower mids that I really like. I also liked the combo of the V30/65/EVM/JBL-it's a very full response that would work in many mixes because having the ability to push certain speakers up in the mix. Like when you want to stick out more, just boost the JBL or V30 and you're there. I often forget that the V30 is a worthy speaker-probably due to my preference for the late 70's/early 80's G12H-80 with a 444 cone(T2876/T3103).
    All of the speakers sounded pretty good though I would choose not to use a JBL unless its dust cap has been replaced. The metal dust cap that JBL & Altec use has a top end that worked great in an era before PA systems actually worked. In today's world they have too much top end unless you take the mic way off the center of the cone. Some Fane speakers might have been interesting in the mix, but they're harder to find working. An Altec 417C would also be classic speaker to mix in.

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I Miked them where the dust cap meets the cone. E906 on V30, G12-65 and G12T-75. SM57 on EV, 548 on Greenback on M-160 on JBL. They really need different mics

    Interesting that you have G12T-75 there! Many don't like it at all! Even "tone authorities" I might call them without irony, people who built rigs and have solid ears for tones, often dislike it, back then and today as well. I approve though, I've always liked the speaker in my use, just need to turn the bass almost off for my Laney amp. Gotta say, those G12-65 and EVM really sound nice though. Separate AND together. EVM was like louder and punchier version of 65 to my ear (mids got more emphasized than highs).
    Surprised how the greenback sounded in this comparison. Not at all to my liking, but in the mix of speakers it complemented the others well. V30 also sounded boring. Like all the spirit was taken away when it was V30's turn. And even G12T-75 that I've played the most surprised me, positively. Didn't expect it to sound this nice with this amp.
    In the end it seems like this comparison revealed more about my preference than about the actual speakers. I would totally make a combination of 65 and greenback (but never greenback alone). Or EVM with something. Currently I have 65 and 75 cabs and they are ok together. Greenback would perhaps bring more spirit combined with one of them though. Now I need to probably hunt some EVM like speaker. I think greenback, 65 and EVM were the perfectly balanced combination. 65 and EVM alone was still a bit honky, but when you add Greenback to them!

    Great video! It's hard to get people to understand how different an amp can sound depending on the speaker that you use. All of us should have a cabinet combo like this to enjoy 😁. You had me when you said "Forsberg". Killer tones throughout. God bless and rock on 👍🎸😎

    • @EdwardT9
      @EdwardT9 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      JBL are not crap, they just sound different. They go a 1000 or so Hz higher than a Celestion so the amp settings have to be adjusted to suit. But a speaker with a 4 inch edge wound aluminum voice coil with a 12 pound magnet in a cast aluminum frame is hardly crap.

      @@DMSProduktions it was put there, along with using the aluminum voice coil, to turn the 130A into a full range speaker, D130, for mono hifi use in the early 50s. The 12” 131A became the D131, then It then got carried over into guitar use when JBL got used by Fender as the D120F. Johan you have reviewed the Marshall Lead 12 but have you played the one year only Lead 15? It was made between the last year of the Lead 12 and the newer MG series. It has a two pot control pregain stage instead of just the jacks, a master volume, and spring reverb. The speakers in the cabs are no name crap but plug the head into any other speaker cabinet and it rocks! See if you can find one and run it through the paces. Marshall Lead 15 microstack. Not the Newer MG series.

    The G12h was so good but I surprisingly really liked the EVM12L by itself!
    What do you think about the Celestion G12 K100 (the newer ones)? Do they do a similar thing that the JBLs do or would you say they are very different?
    Thanks!

  • @NINEWALKING
    @NINEWALKING 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Best combinations, for me, are when you combine two sharp once with two dull once. JBL, Greenback, V30 and even a G12T75 being sharp and EVM12L and G12-65 being dull. Oldie but goldie G12T75 being fairly balanced to be honest. This all OFC take in with specific versions of speakers while same speakers in 8 and 16 Ohm do not sound the same.BTW order of speakers mentioned are for me order of high end content in the overall sound of a speaker. I love midds and bass but high end defines speaker breakup and distortion in this kind of a setup. Midd's give it a body and structure.

    Excellent work Johan! I have thought another using a 4x12 marshal with only two speakers (as in the top cab of your demo). Does that sound pretty good compared to a dedicated 2x12 cab in your opinion? My motivation would to have a less loud cab with speakers working harder for bar gigs and places where you can’t be too loud. Appreciate your work and guidance! Thank you!!

    I liked the G-65 (reminds me of early 80's Judas Priest) and the EVL (reminds me of Iron Maiden instantly) The Marshall version of the V30 is slightly more aggressive than the regular one. To me the best V30 is the Mesa V30, it's significantly darker. Also didn't like the JBL at all. I hated it tbh. The greenback H still retains that classic sound although it was a little too bright for my taste in this situation.
