Thanks for your kind comments about my video! As you can see, I'm not an expert in this topic at all. I did the test because a lot of people were asking me to do it and I thought it would make a fun video so it's interesting to hear your opinion as someone who knows a lot about geneology.
Thanks for introducing my channel to some more people!

Despite the surnames, most Filipinos do *not* have Spanish ancestry (though a small minority do). This is because they chose Spanish surnames rather than inherited them. SO if you meet a Filipino named 'Loida Guzman', that does not mean she has a Spanish ancestor whose last name was Guzman.
It's similar to African american surnames in the US. Upon emancipation, many former slaves took on the last name of the plantation owner, however some chose surnames purely at random. This is how it was in the Philippines.
So the superficial resemblance between Filipinos and Mexicans is mostly due to the East Asian-Amerindian connection, not to an assumed Iberian one.
I wonder what she would get if she uploaded her results to WeGene.

Accurate. The Mestizo population in the Philippines has European ancestry. “Mestizo” on the islands also refers to people with mixed Chinese or mixed Indian ancestry, which are also relatively small ethno-cultural groups that in the last few generations are much less likely to maintain a separate cultural identity and have largely assimilated into the gene pool of the Islands. As for more recent admixture there are small but measurable segments of the population with Japanese, Korean, Iranian, and American ancestry. I know two Filipino siblings that have Irish ancestry, as their grandfather was an Irish immigrant that established a farming business of some sort. I don’t believe that there was an Irish immigration wave of any sort though, I think they just represent a unique case.

Hi Brian! I'm part Mexican American from my mother's side. We're from California. My Mexican ancestry is from the Northern part of Mexico (Durango, Zacatecas). My father is Chinese Filipino born in Cavite, Philippines. Although I have no Spanish dna from my filipino side I do have it from my Mexican side. We do have Spanish surnames on my filipino side. I have a half sister that is full filipino and dark skinned and she looks Native American or Hispanic. Then I have another half sister that looks Thai and a half brother that looks chinese. I pretty much look mix. Half hispanic/chinese asian and light skinned. I agree with you....the majority of filipinos do not have Spanish dna and people get mixed up thinking their Native American or Hispanic. I see it all the time with other Filipinos.

This was so interesting because I have met many indigenous workers from Mexico that work on the farms here in Canada during the spring to fall months. Most of them resemble her very closely and when I talked to them, they did not call themselves Mexicans but Yucatec Mayans and a few were Tzotzil Mayans. They spoke their native language and only Spanish when they talked to me mixed in with a bit of French they learned over the years working here. Such beautiful warm kind yet very spiritual people.

They understand their history better than the rest of México where it is true for most of us that we are mixed, but some groups are not, these groups are mostly in the center and south of the country like the Mayans that you met

When I went to the West Coast, for awhile I was mistaking the local Native people for Filipino. Then it dawned on me that the people working in a band-owned gas station probably weren't Filipino, and I suddenly realized I'd seen a lot of people lately that I'd been misclassifying. I'm from Saskatchewan so I had a very different mental image of Native people, based on Cree, Dakota, etc. We tend to lump them together but there's a lot of variety among Indigenous American peoples.

South Asian and Pacific Islanders can look similar to Aztecs.

There are several ways asían DNA could appear in mexican ancestry. First, as You mentioned the asían origin of indigenous inhabitants. Second there have been numerous waves of immigrants From asia to México and several other countries in America (the continent), people from Japan, Korea, Philippines, China, Vietnam, Mongolia, India, etc. Third, during the spanish Empire era and part of the independent life of México there was a commercial route between Asia and the American continent, particulary between the spanish colony of Philippines and México (New Spain).

I know it’s already been mentioned that most Filipinos, with the exception of a small minority, do not have any Spanish DNA. But I wanted to add that in a way they’re still quite a bit like Mexicans in the sense that they’re sort of a hybrid race like Mexicans, with varying degrees of admixture between regions.
The difference is that instead of being Spanish and indigenous, they’re more like a mixture between East Asian (e.g., genetically like Chinese and Vietnamese) and Polynesian.

Mexicans often overestimate the amount of Amerindian DNA that will be shown in tests. There are two reasons for this. One, Mexico’s schools promote the idea that everyone is Mestizo. This was intended to stop stigmatizing people who are Mestizo. Two, many families have a tradition that, say, their 2x grandparent was Amerindian, and that this person is a tangible link to recent Amerindian ancestry. The problem with this is that the ancestor may not have been 100% Amerindian. Also, the contribution of a 2x grandparent to one’s ancestry may be minimal.

I went to school in Mexico and I’m very familiar of the country different regions since I have family all over the country and have visited most states. There are still some Indigenous communities who have kept their culture and language alive not just in southern and central Mexico but also up North. My Indigenous grandmother came from one of those communities and didn’t learn Spanish until she was a teenager the only reason I don’t know much about her culture is because her family never accepted my grandfather or their kids ( my dad and uncle) because he comes from an European background and to make things worse he also comes from a family of military officers. The Yaqui tribe in Mexico is been the most prosecuted tribe in Mexico by the government there’s a reason why they stay hiding and keep to themselves they don’t like outsiders especially if you have ties to the government or military. In other words they didn’t want anything to do with us and my grandma was shunned away by her own family for marrying an “ outsider”.

Most Mexicans are Mestizo that doesn't mean there arent fully blooded native American people walking around and there are also non indigenous non mestizo Mexicans too . Some people are not proud of their indigenous heritage which is why they lose their customs and language etc. So they choose to say Mestizo because they think its "Better" however you can find two mestizos and they will both look different from each other one looks more European and the other more indigenous even though theuy both have the same admixture. That is why most say Mestizo because its about pride as most are but its difficult to verify as appearences can be deceiving. That is the biracial factor of being a mestizo.

Interesting, my great grandmother was from North East Mexico, and she was primarily Indio. Doing geneology and reading Mexican history, our roots were from the Tlaxcaltecan settlements in Coahuila and Nuevo Leon.
I also found marriage records with local mission Indians, so they are likely mixed with other regional Native groups.
I was actually pretty surprised that Ancestry didn't show the Tlaxcalan history of the region, especially as they later went on to help establish the Missions in San Antonio and the Western U.S.

Example: if my family is from Central America and they move to New York and I am born after two or three generations, I cannot say my family is from New York- my family is still from Central America. This of course is an extreme example but it kills me when people say "my mother was born in Mexico City" and they think they are from central Mexico when they really could be from some place else. ....

Filipinos have Spanish surnames because in 1849 there was a decree where the inhabitants have to carry a surname, so surnames from a book compiled of mostly Spanish-origin names were implemented. And while a small percentage of Filipinos could have distant Spanish ancestry (I've seen 23andme seemed to have confirm this) not many foreigners (Spaniards) from New Spain went to the Philippines. So not surprising that for Filipinos not having Spanish ancestry. They (Philippines) do have good records so it's (or was) easy to trace Filipinos' ancestors.

Same with the Portugese in Sri Lanka. They forcibly converted the fishermen iin coastal areas, or bribed them with better prospects if they convert. So people were given random Portugese surnames. There is a surname "Curera" which means "run". We jokingly say that one fisherman went to get his name late in the evening, the portugese official was tired and annoyed so he chased the man away saying "Curera". The man thought its a nice name and kept it. 🤦 thats just a story though. Chances are Curera refers to messengers on foot.

Since the "Felipinas" were colonized by the "Spanish" in the early 1500s until 1898 when the US invaded the islands. Las Felipinas were colonized by different peoples under the Spanish flag. They were named "Felipinas" to honor Felipe II (Phillip II in English). Spanish ships where crewed and carried passengers from all parts of the empire. Castilians, Basque, Catalans, Genoese, Extremadurians, Andalucian, etc. but also Germanic and even Tlaxcalan indians and other allied groups from New Spain (Mexico). The trade between Mexico and the now called Philipines lasted about 300 years. Such trade extended to China and Japan. The first Japanese embassy visited Mexico City and Madrid and Rome between the late 1500s and early 1600s. Travelers, merchants, adventures, sailors of all nationalities mixed in this large part of the world, because it was the place to go, to immigrate and prosper. I know there are cities in the Philipines peopled by descendants of Tlaxcalans from Mexico. Also, in Mexico there are communities descended from Filipinos on the Mexican west coast. It is not surprising to me. To understand migrations one has to just study a little history of each place. There are few 100% of any ethnicity. 100% Mesoamerican does not say much as there are more than 500 ethnic groups in that region. One problem I find with the genealogy results as currently displayed is that they are not specific enough to be useful to me. Example: If the results say I am 100% French am I really French? - The Franks that named France are a Germanic tribe !!!! Do you want to see mestizaje admixture read about Spanish DNA. They are not all identical, nor are Mexicans.... or any nationality.
Hope it helps clarify some points not mentioned by others. Regards,

Interesting video and results of La Karencita. DNA admixture in Mexico varies greatly depending on location. My parents are from San Luis Potosi (Central Mexico.) I've done some genealogy research on Family Search and traced my family to the 1400s (my mom's side) to Guanajuato, parts of Spain and Belgium. My dad's side only traced to the 1700s in Guadalcazar (next municipality over) which was an mining / farming area. I know I'm a mixture of indigenous, European and possibly African ( Moor from when they conquered Spain....one of my ancestors was baptized in a church built by Moors in Malaga, Spain --- Southern coast from Spain)

My son's paternal side came from Michoacán, Mexico. His DNA as well as his paternal aunt and grandmother all showed some DNA from Peru. I'd had read that there were "stories" of Peruvian's migrating to Michoacán. Shared language was a big clue. DNA seems to confirm it for me. These testers all had some Spanish (no surprise) , African a small amount of Ashkenazi Jewish and grandmother had the "Levant". Fun finds!

I'm about a quarter indigenous by genealogy, but some of that shows up as a pinch of southeast Asian, a pinch of Oceanic, and a pinch of Australian.
I've had mine done at 23, ancestry, myheritage, and uploaded to mytrueancestry, gedmatch, familytreedna, and a few more. mytrueancestry was almost uselses, but did confirm my relationship to some clans and families in Great Britain.
The wackiest was myheritage. They were so far off from everybody else that I was left trying to figure out if they got somebody else's DNA, except they got the cousins right.
Gedmatch was one of my favorites, as it confirmed some of my population level connection to some of their archaic dna info.

The 3 regions I got were “Middle Eastern” “Turkey and Caucasus” and “Iran/Persia” None of those are specific and I did not find anything out. Why is it that for Europe or South America they have all of these specific ethnic groups from every country yet they only have a couple for the whole Middle East which is much more diverse than people think it is. I don’t get it

There’s a misconception of that the Iberian part is an ethnic group of itself. The “Iberian” that came to the new world were mostly from Andalucia, southern spain which was for many generations a big melting pot, with persians (Alans), Greeks, Latins(Romans) North African, Turkic-Mongolian, Asian as well and Germanic Peoples. Another point, whenever a site mentions “Aztec Empire”’ who were really just the Mexicas, they are clueless About the ethnic history of Mexico.

Ancestry and my Heritage are different companies and they collect their data differently and even Ancestry updates their results quite often when I first took it the most European was Portuguese followed by Italian , French Basque and lastly Spain which if you go by my family tree it should be Spain at top after their updated it correct and took my Italian, French and Irish/ Welsh which as far as I know I don’t have anyone in my family claiming Irish or Welsh , I also have Native American and West African which hasn’t been changed and been the same. I’m planning on taking a different test with a different company just to compare results but I’m also comparing my DNA matches and my family records from my family tree .

So people assume its indigenous DNA but it isnt. Asian genetics can survive a very very LONG time as the eyes and facial structure are the most dominant Asian trait. Also interesting that most of my Native American DNA was categorized as Asian or even Siberian, yet we know the native ancestors it came from. So I think these DNA tests have not yet been able to precisely distinguish central and east Asian DNA from American Indian DNA. It gets confused and cross-labeled a lot. Very interesting. If I’m not mistaken, during the beginnings of colonization, Spain took Filipino and Chinese people as slaves to Mexico who were later granted the same status as those that indigenous people had. It became illegal to hold them as slaves. Some were adopted by indigenous communities and lived among indigenous people. This could be a possible explanation for some Mexicans having Specific Asian DNA. Another explanation could be from what was inherited from the Siberian/Beringian migration 20k or so years ago.

And one of these was the alleged noble Polish origins of my grandmother's great grandfather (or was it her great great grandfather ? Can't swear it without my files lol but it was during the slavery Era in the Caribbean). I uploaded mynDNA and my dad's. Hi, absolutely lov😢your show and how you cover it. I have a questions, first how do you go about hiring a genealogist, I’m stumped can move forward with answers for my 80 year old farm. She wants to know about his family but it’s hard to find him I can’t find anything he is Mexican and so that probably has a lot to do with it but if you could help motivate you appreciate it thank you..
