    • @MrArcticShadow

natedogs212 It's all relative. Sure Aragorn is far more experienced than the Hobbits, but for their party size, no one except Gandalf had the "level" required to survive facing thousands of Orcs and a Balrog. Take away the Balrog, and this is still true. In that sense, everyone except Gandalf is a "low level" Now if they had a bigger group, they might get away with having a lower average "level", but this wasn't the case.

amitakartok 99% of them were killed before Legolas was born, with the remaining 1% hiding, so he hasn't personally seen one. But being an elf, he's most definitely heard the stories. Legolas was born somewhere late 2nd, early 3rd age (I could be wrong). He wasn't present at the War of the Last Alliance, unlike his father and grandfather, so he could've been not born yet or too young. For anyone wondering why Gandalf says the things he says :
"Gandalf is making three very specific references as both warning and challenge to the Balrog.
By identifying himself as a servant of the secret fire (or Flame imperishable), Gandalf is identifying himself as a Maia, an embodied angelic servant of the Valar protecting the light of Creation that Eru Iluvatar (or God) has set to burn at the centre of Arda (Earth).
Wielder of the flame of Anor is a reference to his ability to draw on the power of the sun possibly through the Ring of Fire Narya but maybe also through his own divine origins.
Finally as he refers to the Balrog as the Flame of Udun, he informs the Balrog that he knows it to be a corrupted Maia in the service of Morgoth from the earliest time when he resided as Melkor in his dark fortress of Utumno broken by the Valar at the awakening of the Elves. He orders it to retreat (go back to the shadows) or face the consequences of divine conflict and final judgement before the Vala Mandos, the fate of all slain creatures."

I swear I remember reading one Elf went toe to toe in a fight with Morgoth who made Sauron look like a bitch boy and this Balrog was nothing but the lapdog of the head Balrog who was nothing but Morgoths lap dog. I mean the Elf got killed but he still wounded Morgoth in a one on one fight. And Morgoth is supposed to be the big daddy of evil that could create without a ring the stuff Sauron wishes he could. "What is this new Devilry?"
"The Balrog, A demon of the ancient world."
I love this scene for one reason, Legolas is Elf and a huge reason why, he's using a bow and arrow and what makes him a good archer, is his vision. All elves have an ability to see things that far away up close, So when Gandalf tells Boromir about The Balrog, as he is speaking we get a glimpse of Legolas staring down into the shadow in absolute fear, I love it because he is an elf who has lived for many years already by this time, so for him to be as scared as he was, seeing The Balrog. Must have really struck fear into him.

The balrog of moria was the only balrog that survived their extinction by hidding under the misty mountains during many dacades. The dwarves drilled there for a special material called mithril which brough them great wealth. But they drilled to deep and awoke the balro, also called Durin's Bane, bacause he killed King Durin l. Gandalf challenged the Balrog, which accepted the challenge immediately. At the brige of Kazad-Um they fell down to the deepest spot of the mountains, a place, where even the dwarves never have been. Secret Tunnels excavated from unknown creatures guided the two opponents to the eternal stairs, which go from the lowest point of Moria to the Silver peek, the highest point of Moria. The Balrog was good opponent fir gandalf, but to tough, Gandalf died after killing the balrog because he was to exhausted. But the Gods of Middleearth gave him a second Chance because his task was still uncomplete.

Gandalf means grey elf and is essentially a nickname given to him by the races of middle earth. Functionally that name has no meaning to the being that it references, and having come back from the dead it's memory is foggy but for the sake of simplicity it accepts the moniker again.
He is essentially an angel sent to protect creation, after all.

That shot of the Fellowship running across the bridge remains one of my most favorite shots cinema has ever done. The music that went with it is perfect. I don't know why I love it do much, maybe just the shot of them running from an enemy beyond any of them, or the fact that they run over an abyss hard to picture in real life is just mind blowing.

      @ThrashMetallix 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

CG or not, I like it. I don't get why people complain about CGI. The entire point of a movie is to create an illusion. People can say that they should build more models, and I like that too and all, but it's an art that takes time, and money. And sadly, Hollywood nowadays is all about pacing. When it's done right, CGI can be nothing short of brilliant. It's created beautiful environments, stunning effects, and memorable characters sometimes. I don't complain about it.

    • @grotto512

@@0megacron Thats also not a simple Balrog; Thats THE BANE OF Durin. It has a given name, and previous stuff that it done; Gandalf knows this, and thats why he didn't wanted to go to the Moria in the first place, he would prefer bad things above the mountain rather than dwarfs welcoming and friendy presence just because The Bane of Durin is near. (at that point of time until the entrance (watcher's attack) nobody known that expedition to Moria actually lost. Last reports was that Dwarven Kingdom of Moria was reborn, so they didn't known that it was decimated by Orcs/goblins.

Gandalf always speaks to Aragorn as he would a king. Unlike Saruman, Gandalf respects the authority of mortal kings: He advises and persuades them instead of dominating them. So the fact that he isn't courtly or polite shows a desperation that Aragorn has never seen in Gandalf before.

I find that interesting. It could also be classed as idiotic or strange.
It's interesting from my perspective towards a teachorial one because for most of my life (21 now) I have had a very troubled one because of disability and abuse. During most of this time I desired so much for intelligence and to do the stuff I always wanted to do, yet I was denied it by negligence through my father, teachers and being put with other troubled students.
Yet at the same time I found at the age of 7 I started to analytically study the most darkest mind in history and for the next 14 years pushed boundaries beyond all expectations. Now I am in very wide circles that are rare, dangerous, controversial and starkingly complicated which my life revolves around daily non-stop.
However since going to university and being told more than likely that I have this list of disabilities, for the time being I am psychologically damaged because I now have to write a completely new path different to the one I wrote myself for the past 16 years.
For me and for the seeable future life will always remain shit as shit will continue to fly. On the other hand I am made out of blood and iron.

Michael Stanley LOTR had better story design, pacing, tension, and even lighting in addition to atmosphere along with the CGI being seamlessly blended into the environment: the environment showed little to leave your mind guessing at the scale, it showed us a quick peek and our minds filled in the rest.
The Hobbit is multi million overly reliant CGI porn, the same problem with the star wars prequels: suffering from detail overload. It leaves nothing to the imagination and that is the main problem.

After reading the Silmarillion recently I now understand what kind of enemy a Balrog is and why Gandalf and even Legolas had this reaction. Balrogs are very created by Morgoth himself. Damn I would have crapped my pants.

Balrogs we're not created by Morgoth they were from the same order as Gandalf they were Maiar spirits seduced and corrupted by Morgoth.

Gandalf The Grey yeah I know I meant they became like this because Morgoth made them like this. I just didn't feel like overanalyzing it :)

lyon laurent I believe you're right, Iyon. I mean, I believe the way you put it was right. Because orcs technically weren't created by Morgoth either, they were elves, but Morgoth is considered their creator.

      "Gandalf and even Legolas"
That sentence makes me puzzled, whether you intend to say that a Sindar is mightier than a Maiar?

Knight of the Laughing Tree oh not all :) I meant it like: thanks to the Silmarillion I understand why Gandalf had this reaction because he's a Maia and realises what a Balrog is.. And I also understand now why EVEN Legolas got so scared because as an Elf he has probably heard of what kind of enemies Balrogs were in the old battles in Beleriand.

Just imagine a group of these needing to drive ungoliant away from killing morgoth. Ungoliant must have been a beast.

Yeah just imagine that after destroying the Two Trees, her size had grown so much that even Melkor got scared.

    0:41 look at Gandalf....
He knows _exactly_ what that sound was...and the despair in his face...you know this thing is going to be bad...

Coming back to this after years and I still appreciate the gravity of Gandalf following an ancient hell-beast down through the pits of Moria.
