  • When my SnapOn dealer told me that they offer key fob locking systems on some of their tool boxes I knew I had to add one to mine. In this video I show you how I added that system to my Harbor Freight US General tool box and custom tool boxes.

    Nice bit of engineering. I've always wanted to do something similar.

      Thanks. I had the kit for a while and was trying to work out the install details in my head. Finally I just started doing it and everything fell into place.

    great concept. keeps the "cookie jar" locked. any one with 2 brain cells to rub together (methheads/tweakers excluded) would realize that with a "lazy cam" (solenoid end) arrangement, that a wire type probe - "slim-jim" type tool would be able to access and hence move the actuator mechanism and unlock the tool box. think like a "slim-jim" sliding between a car window and the window gasket to access the back of the lock cylinder locking pawl. when you installed the actuator mechanism, you effectively took away the positive locking (deadlocking) aspect of the mechanical key lock for the sake of convenience and novelty.

      Correct. I wasn't trying to create a safe, just keeping the riff raff out of the box.

      Take a look at your lock mechanism and see if these same style actuators could work. Good luck.

    Cripes, that's genius! Since you wired for 12V, it's a no brainer to me that you can run windshield washer fluid pumps dispensing rum and/or bourbon into the soft drink of your choice.....

      If I did that, and I'm not saying I would, I wouldn't be able to post a video of it that management might see.

    I have a question... if you drilled the hole in your lever closer to the point of rotation (fulcrum), that would let the 3/4" throw of the actuator swing the lever the desired amount. Was this not an option because the actuators didn't have enough power to push/pull a shorter lever? They seem to be fairly stout.

    • @TheGreasyShopRag
      @TheGreasyShopRag  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      As I recall, the actuator couldn't handle it and I needed the extra leverage. Recently I added an actuator to the 26" top box. I'll show that in my annual toolbox update this fall.

      @@TheGreasyShopRag thanks. Some coworkers and I have recently been talking about tool security... scumbag people have sticky fingers. So we were scouring the web and found your video. We all have different boxes, so our needs are different, but the actuator is a key component in all our ideas. Thanks for the great content!

    Saw the same kit on Amazon, and had the same exact thought pop in my head. Thanks for the video!
    My only question is how do you get thr linkage to move without the key in for the drawers. Is the linkage disconnected from the lock itself?

  • @telace1

  • @ramit8099
    @ramit8099 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why but drill a home closer to rod, which would increase the pivot point, which would cause ¾ stroke of actuator to over an 1 inch of leverage, sweet box, I like it

    • @TheGreasyShopRag
      @TheGreasyShopRag  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. The actuator didn't have enough power to throw the lever with the hole that close to the rod.
