- The experiment with peonies continues. This is not a "how to grow peonies" video. Instead, I'm trying to figure out if peonies grow better in pots or in ground beds for the purpose of selling. In 1 year, can I grow nicer, ready-to-sell plants by growing them in pots, or in beds? That's what I'm trying to find out.

As mentioned before, I have ZERO experience with peonies, but do like the flowers, so looking for different methods to grow then one day.. I have chipmunks galore that love snacking on fresh tubers and bulbs, so I'm hopeful that I can grow peonies in pots to protect them from the critters. Your experiment gives me hope. Looking forward to the spring update!

I got a very small peony at a plant sale. It wasn’t marked, and I didn’t actually realize it was a peony. I potted it up and it is doing great. Some volunteer strawberries popped up in the pot and they have lived in communal plant joy for three years. I think people try to make them see more difficult than they are. They say don’t move them, but I had another one which though in full sun was just not thriving. I moved it, took the root ball and separated it into four bunches and now I have four healthy plants two years later.
Peonies loves cold winter
I have one recommendation, put them in cloth grow pots. They will require more regular watering but will not get root bound.
I always cut mine to the ground, left them in the ground. I live in ma, so cold winters and they grew back better then ever ! Every year! It usually takes a year or 2 to grow flowers after splitting or regrowing. The flowers here only last a few weeks before April may rain..

They grow so easily here in Kentucky. I've dug them up from my grandparents properties (1920s).

You can find roots wrapping themselves around any bone meal that still looks white in the soil-mix in good-they like bone meal a lot
I was of the understanding that peonies need the goodness from the leaves to feed their tubers?
Interesting.... I've never heard that.
I've got two big plants i have had for about 10 years so there's going to be plenty of tubers. I'm going to try to make about 30 or more smaller plants hopefully. That's my project for tomorrow morning LOL.

@@savvydirtfarmer I am feeling it. I was surprised how deep these peonie roots went. But this project was defantly a workout. It was like digging up a well rooted small tree. I got 37 in the ground from the 2 10 yr old plants. About 23 was with 1-3 crowns , the others was just tubers with small roots, no crown.. I used my ryobi 18 volt saw zall to cut through them. A knife for this project will not work . One was so big that all under the crown is was solid soft wood for about 5-6 inches below crown. . I also potted up 3 to see if they do good just like you did. I am hoping all show growth come spring
@@randyman8984 I would love to see how a big commercial nursery digs their peonies. They gotta have some impressive equipment and people. Your way sounds like my way... a shovel, a sawsall and an idea are all you need. But man, you feel that the next day. Good work... report back next Spring. It'll be good to see how it turns out for you.
@@savvydirtfarmer keep in mind that this is a ten-year-old plant never touched. I would imagine these big nursery's are doing this yearly so the Roots stay contained, not as massive like what I had today. These do put on a show every spring so I am hoping they come back strong. I was kind of doubting myself today LOL. The only thing that sucks about peony's is there only fantastic for about 3 weeks. They are ugly all the other 49. I know now to cover mine because mine was blooming when we had a frost and had a bunch of buds that was going to put on a show but never did because the frost got it.

I did a final wrap up when the dust settled from it all.... wish I could point you to it exactly, but it was done last Spring sometime.
@@savvydirtfarmer Thanks! I’ll find it. I am heartbroken over deciding to leave my entire flowerbed of 5 different types of peonies at the house we just sold. We were there for 7 years and I put soooooooooo much blood, sweat & tears into my yard and beds. The hardest part was watching all my peonies FINALLY blooming after 3 years of nurturing them! 😫 So I have decided to start over and plant them in containers so that I don’t have to go through this “trauma” again! 😆 Thanks for the great videos!
Peonies love sun so I think that is why you may have lost some at the back end of your planting in the ground....when you do see blooms in spring the unopened buds will have ants on them...it’s normal ....just leave them be. Peonies also are very cold hardy and I have read they set their buds better in cold...no need to baby. I am going to put my new (purchased in spring) peonies that are in pots in my garage for overwintering....I will cut back to 2-3” when leaves say it’s done. They are beautiful plants just wished they bloomed longer....nature is a tease that way!
Thanks for the info!! None of my plants get babied... if they can't survive outside in the open in pots, I don't need them.
Do I have to move my peony pot indoor when it is winter?
Did the plants in the bed get the same care (water, fertilizer &/or weeding) as the potted plants? Why did you cut off the tops? Those leaves could have grown more roots to add to the energy reserves for next year. Also, without seeing the entire root mass of the potted plant it's hard to say which had the best roots. I would say the bed grown plants because those large roots hold a lot of energy, but maybe there are large roots inside the potted root ball too. Hard to tell with the dirt on. Since you left some of the roots in the ground that were cut off those plants only have part of their roots unlike the potted plants that got to keep 100% their roots so that may give the potted plants an advantage assuming they both ultimately grew the same amount of root mass. I think you should have left a few in the ground for the rest of your experiment. It will still be interesting to see the results.

Hmmmm, I would say the that ones in pots were not competing with the others closely planted you have planted in the ground so the roots seem better in the pots.
Can't wait to see how they all come out in the Spring. I would MUCH rather grow anything in the ground (way less maintenance), but they are a LOT of work come time to dig them.
I also read if you bury them too deep they won't produce flowers. They seemed pretty deep in those pots you put them in.
Maybe. But the crowns are no deeper than 1 inch below the surface, probably less. Time will tell. thanks!

I've changed the depth at least twice and have yet to get flowers

It's a 2 qt (I think) grain scoop... you can find them at feed stores locally.

The pots are just sitting on the ground... there is a woven ground cover under them.

I have no problem caring for peonies. I place them away from the house due to ants. But it should get enough sun, water to grow faster. Cut the stalks before it gets too cold down to the bottom. March will appear new eyes and as the sun stays longer by late April the buds comes out and it blooms by Memorial Day.
Here, they're about finished with bloom season by Memorial Day.
