  • Watch Sir Keir Starmer's full speech at the Labour party conference in liverpool on Tuesday (27 September).
Liz Truss’s government has “lost control of the British economy”, Sir Keir Starmer has alleged, after the pound fell to an all-time low in the wake of chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s mini-Budget.
Sir Keir Starmer concluded his speech by claiming that Labour are the “party of the centre-ground”.
But he warned that the Tories will “stop at nothing” in a bid for a fifth term.
“Conference, on climate change, growth, aspiration, levelling-up, Brexit, economic responsibility we are the party of the centre-ground,” he said, echoing Tony Blair as he added: “Once again, the political wing of the British people - and we can achieve great things.”

They set up the sure start programme which helped families across the class divide. Britain boomed whilst the rest of Europe had mini recessions. Of course the Tories try to play this down. Of course he made mistakes, primarily in being too close to Bush and his right wing administration in the US. Ultimately this caused to him to be led astray regarding Iraq which is a fantastic shame, because it lets the self centered Tory supporters sideline all the good things that happened under the Blair administration. Irrespective of all the criticism levied against Tony Blair, he had the welfare of Britain at heart. That is more than can be said about any of the Tory leaders since the last Labour government - Fact!

The Tories have driven the bus off a cliff then found a new bus and are now currently looking for an even bigger cliff. It’s time to stop this disaster of a political party before they do irreparable damage. It’s not labour vs conservative anymore it’s sanity vs insanity. But it’s a democracy so your vote is your vote. It’s up to you to make the right choice for yourself.

All makes perfect sense, very fair, and coming from the heart. Wow, my mind would be fundamentally more at ease if I knew our government were following this plan. This speech was inspirational. I urge our government, if they have any desire to do what's best for the people of the UK at all, to pass a motion of no confidence in Liz Truss and the Tory government; This isn't about parties anymore - this is a case of choosing whether you support putting the majority of people through years of hell for a.. petty.. short-term win, or whether you choose to allow people all over the country the opportunity to truly make the positive difference to each others' lives that we want to. This plan is strong, and I don't think it's possible that the public could possibly think Liz Truss or the Tory party have any hope for running this country at the moment, especially considering how the last year has played out. Maybe sooner rather than later then- it's time to stop digging, swallow the bitter pill, and admit that you were wrong, before it's too late - at least it'll take the fumbling Tory party out of the limelight - maybe you could even learn something, feel free to have a midlife crisis if you like, take some time out, maybe embrace newfound actual values about your purpose in life, see what life could be. Kier Starmer has my vote any day, and I will work my socks of in order to achieve the goals laid out in this plan! Bring on the real growth!

Saying that, the way he is speaking here I am wondering if not the Labour Party then who can you vote for to make a difference to this country and the general person on the street? The NHS, the economy, the fuel bills and cost of living crisis, the war in Ukraine. If the choice is between him or Liz Truss then there is no choice. This must be the best opportunity the Labour Party will ever have to sweep back into power. Before this conference I said the Labour Party still wasn't ready. Oh, how wrong I was. Now is the time.
