I Went To A Film Location By Mistake: the landscape of Withnail & I

  • I've had film locations for Withnail & I in my Google Map for years... so when passing Penrith in Cumbria I paid them a visit.
Any cover of the opening titles, a King Curtis sax version of Whiter Shade of Pale gets a copyright strike.. so I went to the origins.. Bach Air... on sax by Rob Barclay who kindly gave me permission to use his version.

This is so cool, and I love that they screen the movie at the farm house. That place is awesome, if i ever get a chance to go to England I will try and make that happen. Great footage man love this video

Absolutely beautiful footage, presentation and great information Jules, enjoyed this a lot! I have never seen this movie...I would have been ten when this came out, and live in Canada...but I am going too now! Thanks for reaching out to me, this turned out wonderful!🎷🎷

Loved this, thank you! I've been a fan of the film only for a few years but it feels like a lifetime. It was heartwarming to find out about the preservation of Monty's retreat and the annual screening - how fantastic! I once had a similar experience at the campsite at Devil's Tower, where they show Close Encounters of the Third Kind every single evening in the tourist season (Devil's Tower actually looms behind the TV screen as you watch the film, which is incredible). Such events are a magnificent way to honour classic works of cinema.

the most quotable film of all time

It's actually a very deep film but the surface is light due to the comedy. Anyone with any depth of soul will feel the impact of the final scene in Hyde Park. It is because the film is deep that it resonates with so many people. People may 'like' and even say they 'love' films that have no substance or depth (i.e.90% of American films) but those films don't resonate with them.

I found myself in bed not able to sleep due to too much caffeine. Somehow “we’ve gone on holiday by mistake” popped into my head and I’m lying in bed pissing myself laughing. So I’ve just got up, watched that clip with the farmer on TH-cam and now I’ve found your wonderful video. It’s amazing how this film connects people, touches people and yet as you say, it’s about very little. Thanks 🙏🏼💜✨

@@typower9 yes, I agree with what you’re saying. The basic plot line about two guys trying to get away from it all by heading out the countryside, only to be confronted with the harsh conditions of living in such rural environments if you’re not used to it, and the comedy that unravels from that basic premise (plus the side plot that uncle Monty wants to get in bed with Marlow).
And yes, there are deeper subtexts that quite often comedies prove to be the best vehicle to explore, without getting too remorse and unwatchable.

A very decent brief dive into the location. Yeah, a classic movie, which had us in rapture. Like you lived the life and knew the utter madness. I had you down as some middle class teacher then I saw a dude with dreads and boots like the brew crew. You never can tell. Well, good going. Mark

Are you telling a sarcastic joke? A middle class white teacher would have rastafarian braids, wouldn't they. Precious hipster type. I'm sure they're a nice guy.

Excellent piece, Jules. I'm pretty sure I've watched Withnail & I; but (assuming that I have) it was many years ago and... I've forgotten the story. But then, as you say there basically isn't much of one, maybe the reason I can't remember it is because it's... so forgettable? I'll add it to my bucket list to watch (again?). (First item on that list: more round tuits.)
