Great video! I grew up there and remember when they were building the Indiana Mall. I also remember when it was thriving back in the early 80's and hanging out there on Friday and Saturday nights.
pretty cool - i wanna say i love the "retro" look, but seems like in fact it is probably just all the same fixtures and interior design of the mall pretty much dating back to when it was actually built. I remember growing up in the 80s that all those sunken areas in malls with seating and fountains was something in a bunch of the malls where i live, but over the past 20 years they (at least around here) have totally removed those sunken areas with benches, plants, and fountains and just brought all the floor up to same level flatness. but totally miss all those things - gonna totally date my self on this but i remember back in high school hanging out in those areas of the mall and smoking....back when you could just smoke inside the mall even while walking around...we don't even think anything of ashing on the floor as we'd walk between stores....
4:32 that is the area where the sunken seating and raised platform for presentations used to be. Plus there was a fountain as well. The centerpiece of the mall was the original design. Opened around 1980. And boy what a stink about it drawing business away from downtown retailers...
You don't see fountains like the one in this vid anymore! I love your enthusiasm for vintage mall fountains. One of our malls here in Tucson used to have a ton of really cool ones, but they went away when it was renovated
I'm from Indiana Pa...lived here for over 30 years. I actually used to play hockey with the owner of this mall and believe he owned others. Let me ask someone who would know and I'll get back to you. Also, this mall used to have these strange fountains that you used to walk down into and there was seating and whatnot. they took them out several years ago. From 4:20 to 4:38 you can tell that the floor is different than the floor around it. that is where one of the fountains was. You used be able to stand there and look down into it or walk down in there....very odd.
I remember those fountains!!! I especially loved the one right outside of the JCP that had steps leading down into it and a sitting area. If I remember correctly, it also had colored lights in the bottom of that fountain. The fountain outside of the Bon Ton was pretty high. That was such a nice small mall. I loved it the few times I visited there. I live about an hour away from this mall.
We're close to the same age. Clas of '99. I remember when Little Caesar's replaced the K Cafe and ice cream/snack stands. A friend I was roommates with for 5 years always used to go to the K Mart by Superstition Springs Mall to buy his Hot & Ready. Probably about 3 miles from one house we lived in. He never knew the rest of us got ours from the freestanding location just off the intersection a little over halfway to the K Mart!
This mall looks like it went up in the early 80's and was never renovated. I'm not sure that it's officially a dead mall yet but it is a dying one. The "place holder" stores are moving in and the quality stores are moving out.
100% correct you were. Someone who works there. 1/2 of the stores are closed now including Kmart, Bonton, and Sears. The only big one open is JCPenny and Bath and Body. The rest are a few little stores here and there and the Annie Anne’s.
I worked for the Kmart distribution center in PA years ago, and the employees were just plain miserable. I was glad to see the door after just a few months. Easily one of the most depressing places I ever worked.
Indiana is a small, somewhat isolated city sustained economically almost entirely through the presence of the university there. That is good news for this mall, because it means that students must somehow deal with it at some point. That's coupled with Pennsylvania's huge senior citizen population who continue to frequent places such as these (it's a 'major' stop on the local bus line-which is used heavily by older people). The mall will probably continue on unless it loses an anchor or two. Aside from stores coming and going, the design has not changed significantly since the 80s (I am not sure of when it was built). I can tell you with pretty high accuracy which stores were where. There used to be a fountain at each anchor and a large one in the center. I have not been there in more than six years (it looks identical).
Thought you'd like to know - when you are walking through, notice the large patch of new tile on the floor? That's where there used to be a grotto style fountain, again, similar to warren. Zamias built both of those malls, and Butler, PA.
Great video! I'm enjoying your stuff and have subscribed. I envy you getting to explore all these cool places and seeing them in person. Love the fountains and seating areas...the vintage look and really love the end. Awesome vintage and so miss things like that. I'm sure you've heard there are several dead malls around the Pittsburgh PA. area. Thanks for the videos. :)
+Ace's Adventures Century III Mall in West MifflinPA. is dying very bad. Dan Bell did a vid on it but, it's a great mall to see. I just found the Dead Mall Facebook page and it looks like many are mentioned in the Pittsburgh area there. The Washington Mall...yeah, it's a big mess from what I recall. Too bad they wouldn't let you in.
+Melissa Smith hope you get to go. It's an awesome place to see. It was "the place" back in the day. I'm so sad about Century III dying. It's mainly the condition of the area. Take lots of video if you can and upload. I don't live in PA. anymore so I'm always interested in the latest pics and vids of C-III. :))))
This Christmas season, the sales staff at Zamias really got their licks in as they had most of the store sites rented. I was really quite surprised. Was just in last week, and its back to the same roughly 50% residency. I'm still surprised that the Kmart hasn't closed yet.
You should kickstart a go-fund so ppl. can help you across the country to visit all the other legendary landmark now dead malls!! Btw I really much enjoy your videos, so entertaining...cause I'm hooked! You are crazy good at filming them!! Good luck getting across the country...many safe and fun adventurous travels Ace my friend!! :). Thanks for this.
This mall was actually built by the same company that built the Warren Mall, the Laurel Mall in Connellsville, the Mountaineer Mall in Morgantown, and a few other malls in the area. Not sure what the name of the company was but they were a local developer.
This mall was built and opened around 1980, back then we used to call this the " big mall" in comparison to the other mall in town, the 'Regency Mall", which really was small and dead. Since then, the Regency Mall has gotten a Martins, a TJ Maxx, an Olllies, and a dollar tree, as well some other small businesses, which now makes the Regency Mall the better of the two. The Indiana Mall is really a dinosaur and needs demo'd or updated...either way, the time for these types of malls is past.
I live down the road from this mall and have lived in Indiana all my life. Sadly two more stores are in the process of closing since this video was posted, fye and ohh la la. JcPennys is at risk for closing. We'll find out next month when the list comes out. So many people travel out of town to go shopping anymore. Sadly some of the residents don't have that option. I really hope they do something to turn this mall around before it's too late.
Indiana and Warren Malls were developed by Crown American out of Johnstown PA. They opened a lot of malls in PA, MD, WV And VA during the late 70's and into the early 90's. At one point they owned Hess's Department store, and many of their malls were anchored by a Hess's Store, along with a Gee Bee (the discount division of Glosser Brothers Department Store out of Johnstown). They also had a good partnership with Bon-ton/Eyerly's and Bon-Ton/Eyerly's would sometimes anchor their malls, when Hess's did not have a presence in that area. In the case of the West Manchester Mall, it had Bon-Ton, Hess's and Gee Bee when it first opened. Most of the Crown American malls had similar color schemes, fountains and facades. Crown American hit hard times in the 90's and had a financial crisis after an IPO that went bust. They were family controlled and I do not think they are in business any longer. I worked at the Bon-Ton in the North Hanover Mall in the 1980's, which was also a Crown American property. The Bon-Ton stores in Indiana, Warren, Oil City and Butler were opened while I worked for Bon-Ton.
I frequented this mall a lot back in 2010-2012, when I attended IUP. I didn't have a car so it was pretty much the only place I could see movies at. I believe it was built in 1979 (which seems really obvious given the decor) and it's been able to hang on for as long as it has because of the general isolation of Indiana, PA. It's inevitable that it will die but 40 years ain't a bad run.
This is my local mall, and it is run by Zamias. It is in desperate need of a major renovation and updating, nothing really has been done to it since opening in 1979. With the IUP campus just a few moments away, it has GREAT potential if only somebody would come in and redevelop it. I believe all 4 anchors do fairly well and all were here since it opened. I think it was renovated, more stores would come in. Time will tell, I guess.
Had to rewatch this before I saw your updated video on the Indiana Mall. Seems this mall is frozen in the late 70s/early 80s with that "beautiful" music playing in the mall. Reminds me of the "beautiful music" station in New Jersey WPAT that my aunt played int he 70s, music that put me to sleep. I saw the genius in your work already in these early videos. You just keep getting better. I'll watch Wallieb26s Indiana Mall video which was done three months ago then go to you update. Never give up your goal of getting to every dead and dying mall in the US. There are ways to make it happen... I speak from experience.
I think it's owned by Zamias. The same people own the mall in Johnstown, PA. They recently had a mall near Pittsburgh that was foreclosed on. The mall in Johnstown is also dying a slow death.
At least this mall still looks a little bit alive. I noticed the Century III Mall video you uploaded, and that place seems more dead every time I go in there.
Just to let you know, you should revisit our mall (Indiana born and raised), because if you thought it was "dead," then you'll not believe how truly dead it is now! Kmart is gone, the hall to it only has the pizza place and auntie Anne's, Bon ton is gone and only about 6 stores in the whole place. Its sick. When I was in Jr High in 1998 it was the place to be.
There used to be one in the Beaver Valley Mall in Center Township, Pennsylvania but it was replaced by a Shoe Dept. Encore. It was in the wing of the now former Macy's location. It was one of the best glow in the dark mini golf place in the area. It was called Lunar Mini Golf. The theme was an alien invasion of sorts.
This mall was sold back to the bank early this year and lost more interior stores. The kmart has been abandoned since September 2017. Sears was abandoned less than a year before Kohls and Harbor Frieght took that. Bonton was abandoned since its bankruptcy but Dunham Sports is coming Spring 2021. The interior has lost most of its stores and is pretty dead inside anymore. The big question remains on what the bank with ownership will do with the property.
Hey you stated in your video checking out all dead malls in midwest, You should check out Gwinnett place mall about 30 miles northeast of atlanta, it used to be biggest mall in southeast excluding florida and has lost 4 anchors and only has sears barely hanging on and macys in its last days and at least 2/3 or stores inside are vacant used to have 250 stores at its peak
Ace come back to Indiana Mall and see it now! Kmart is gone ,Radio Shack,Rue 21,American Outfiters ect .There are 7 others gone ! It's too bad ! The mall has been here 38 yrs. ! So if you ever come back take a tour of the mall ! What a sorry sight! Polywog690! Indiana,Pa.
BTW... That fountain at the end of the video looked exactly just like one of the ones they used to have at the Clearview Mall as well! BTW... When did this mall first opened?
Oh man someone mentioned the shoe shine man.. he was great. That little water area in the middle of the mall that you walked down into I called that the "lagoon" area and I used to go down there to sneak and smoke cigarettes as a teenager lol.
you saw the octagon pieces replaced in the floors those where pay phone banks . the big one in middle of mall was a stage. the one by Spencer's was a water fountain with a bigger wishing well.. far end by bon ton had a steak house restaurant . say in the 80s. now. it's dying...
Never got to see this mall before everything closed. Only anchor store left is JCPenney. Sears got converted to a Kohls and Harbor Freight. Kmart is used for Spirit Halloween. Bon-Ton still sits vacant.
hi, 2021 here. Kmart, subway, Capri, fye, Sears, bonton, radio shack, Aeropostale, go bonkers, hallmark, all the fountains but 1 and they don’t even turn it on anymore, kings jewelry, gamestop, gone. I’m sure I’m missing more.
What U don't know to people saying never moving there is two miles down the road is IUP. Indiana University of Pennsylvania which is a huge party school. But not built by same people but same architect.
Just letting you know the Galleria Mall in York Pa (17402) is dying very quickly, in case you want to check it out. It might be able to make a comeback though because they are supposed to be putting in a casino soon. So I thought this may actually be a mall story that might just have a happier ending. Just letting you know in case you wanted to do a before & after if it does make a comeback. I be happy to talk with you if you need more information.
Some aspects of this look very similar to the old University Mall in Athens, Ohio. The seating, location of restaurant across from Kmart, side hallways.
and at one time we had Aladdin's castle arcade where h&r block is now. then wen CVS pharmacy moved out we had pocket change arcade. now gone was replaced by Dingbats. which is now closed!!
Hi great videos you might want to film Pittsburgh Mills Mall off RTE. 28 Sears has been gone for awhile Macy's is due to leave Borders Books gone was a huge store, Dicks sporting goods will be the only anchor store soon . Clear View Mall in Butler Pa. Looks like the Indiana mall style Bon Ton was there Pennies,Sears will be closing soon and Boscovs , Century 3 mall , Northway Mall in Ross TWP. Opened in 1963 ? Going through a huge remodel now indoor mall being converted to a outside mall .......Take Care
Have you ever checked out the Euclid square mall in Cleveland? It is mega 80s with churches and only one retail store. And the outside gas an old Kay bee toys store and a red lobster that looks like a war zone.
This mall has been dying for years they are finally building a new one outside of where Claire's is there used to be a couple steps down to where there was a lil fish pond with a bench since this video was filmed more stores have been moved out and there is rumored a new mall being built. The Capri pizza is still completely amazing and awesome
It has really gone downhill since this was filmed unfortunately. Many of the stores that were there are closed now. One anchor store K-Mart is already gone and Sears is closing. Bon-Ton just announced 40 stores are closing and it's not yet known if the one here is on the list or not. From what I have heard the entire wing where K-Mart was is getting ready to be closed off. It's a shame really, it was a nice mall back in the day. If this mall dies off completely it really leaves a Wal-Mart supercenter as about the only big store in town. Capri Pizza is a fantastic little mom and pop pizza shop in this mall run by two really nice owners. They are thinking about moving instead of closing which is great news. I would personally be heartbroken if they closed down. Really good pizza. Its really sad to see this once thriving mall in this condition. I really hope it can be turned around but after seeing other malls go down this path it looks bleak for the only mall in the area
I live in Indiana! Its really busy at Christmas ! This mall looks just like Warren Mall! IT WAS OWNED BY THE SAME COMPANY AT ONE TIME ! STILL A NICE OLD MALL ! POLYWOG690 INDIANA,PA.
ReviewsTechNow I worked for them as well, in 1990-1991. I hated working for them as well. It was so unusual to be paid in cash instead of a corporate check. I was attacked in the Garden Center, and they wanted me to work out there again the following summer, which I refused. Another funny thing was it was around that time that they started putting in scanner registers from IBM, they had the old kind in which you had to manually punch in departments. It was also the time in which I learned to count back change, as you hit total and someone gave you a $10 or $20 bill and you had to give back change. Funny how the new generation cannot even do that!
AroundIndiana K- Mart was NOT a miserable company ! They had merchandise that EVERYONE could afford not just a select few ! I worked in this Mall and it was a great place to be !
There's something so ironically beautiful dead malls. I just can't get enough of them.
The Indiana Mall is always dead in the weekdays, but in the weekends it's pretty active

I worked at the pizza place, Capri, when I was at IUP. Pretty good pizza, owner was a real Italian pizza man, kept it all simple.
is it just me or is the pizza from capri shit

I like the Dan Bell style series, too bad he doesnt do this much anymore. Subbed!
Why not?
Tiffany Days

awesome video as always man...keep up the good work!!! you have me as a subscriber love your videos. look forward to more.
Thank you so much
This is all we have in Indiana pa :(
you saw the octagon pieces replaced in the floors those where pay phone banks . the big one in middle of mall was a stage. the one by Spencer's was a water fountain with a bigger wishing well.. far end by bon ton had a steak house restaurant . say in the 80s. now. it's dying...

You need to go back to this mall K-mart Sears and Bon Ton is ALL CLOSED now
hi, 2021 here. Kmart, subway, Capri, fye, Sears, bonton, radio shack, Aeropostale, go bonkers, hallmark, all the fountains but 1 and they don’t even turn it on anymore, kings jewelry, gamestop, gone. I’m sure I’m missing more.
I spent my junior high weekends at this mall. That area at 4:30 was a fountain then.
What U don't know to people saying never moving there is two miles down the road is IUP. Indiana University of Pennsylvania which is a huge party school. But not built by same people but same architect.
Hahahaha. I live right up the road from this mall and was probably working in the theater when you were filming this!
This reminds me of the old Glendale Galleria form the 80's. of course now is very fancy . What time and day did you take this vid?
that K-Mart commercial.... somebody HAD to be smoking something to think that was a good idea, even for the 70's lol
Was just announced today that the K-Mart will be closing in the fall. Last I was here the mall was so empty, shame it's such a lovely mall :(
Love it! Suprised to see a operating Radio Shack.
I live in Indiana and I always go to this mall
Tripod OnAStick same
Same
We have a K-Mart in Crystal River Florida but it's going out of Business. .Sad to see old stores we grew up with going away
billjones citrus county florida we had a Kmart in Newburyport MA that closed back in Sept of this year. Very sad was always easy for me
Looks pretty close to the old Richland Mall in Johnstown
Richland was larger.

You need to check out the Arnot Mall in Horseheads, New York. I live in PA (right on the border of PA and NY). I’m telling you, go check it out.
Very Cool Video!
Have you ever checked out the Euclid square mall in Cleveland? It is mega 80s with churches and only one retail store. And the outside gas an old Kay bee toys store and a red lobster that looks like a war zone.
Yes sir it's on my channel
Ace's Adventures
capri literally saves the whole mall
That mall has about 70% occupied
This is from my town!!! I was actually working at Kmart here at the time.
Shoulda done one on Northway Mall in Pittsburgh
Visit the Kyova Mall in Ashland, KY
I will check it out!!!
I went to IUP so I was at this mall many times. We used to laugh to say when Kmart is your anchor store, it cant be a great mall.
2 Fountains are so pretty
we lost our radio shack, ooh la la, fye, and game xpress. we are in the process of losing rue 21. I work at Indiana Kmart, which is also closing
I really hope it can be turned around but after seeing other malls go down this path it looks bleak for the only mall in the area
great video...subscribed!
Thank you very much!
I used to work in this mall during the 80s. Thank dog I escaped!
come visit Owensboro Kentucky its a semi dead mall here
not necessarily a dead mall, but could quickly be one with a kmart and a sears as anchors. Those two companies are circling the toilet.
Jason's Storm It was just announced this Kmart is closing. Sad!
Thank you for what you're doing, I know our teen years were spent in the mall. Crazy how times have changed. Check out Gwinnett Place Mall in GA.
Thanks so much for watching and subscribing, feel free to share, there is much more to come!
I live in Indiana! Its really busy at Christmas ! This mall looks just like Warren Mall! IT WAS OWNED BY THE SAME COMPANY AT ONE TIME ! STILL A NICE OLD MALL ! POLYWOG690 INDIANA,PA.
I love this mall, it's not super dead, but has plenty of aesthetics

Visit Plaza Central In Arlington Texas
There is a mall in DuBois, Pa that's even smaller and worse off than this one.. if you can imagine that.
Are you sure you didn’t set the Time Circuits for 1978?
This Mall is incredible! The walk down fountain is awesome! This place screams late 70’s early 80’s!
I worked at Kmart for a few years and it is such a miserable company.
You got paid cash? Strange.
AroundIndiana K- Mart was NOT a miserable company ! They had merchandise that EVERYONE could afford not just a select few ! I worked in this Mall and it was a great place to be !
Are there any malls in Pennsylvania that are not dead?
we lost oh la la we're also losing our fye and rue 21. so there's three more stores in this mall gone.
Cassie Mcadams thanks for the info!
LOL There's always the Pro Active Stall with Adam Levine!
i feel sorry for all the employees . and perhaps also the owners of those shops ( not all shops are from multi million companies )
the Fuzz Box got a little camera time!
I remember when this mall was being built, where did time go. LOL
This reminds me of the Visellia mall in California
There is a Spirit Halloween at this mall.
