This reminds me of a time I needed an instrument voltage regulator. Yes, a long time ago. My big city dealer told me they had to remove the dash to get to it and they would need the car for a couple of days. As it happens, the next week I was working in a small town that had a dealer right down the street. They said they could get it done that day. When I went back to get my car, the presented me a bill for about $35. I told them I thought they had to remove the dash. They told me the book says that but you can just reach up and grab it if you were limber enough. The part was about $20 and they thought $15 was enough for labor. What great people!
And then you woke up. 😂. Just kidding. Glad there are good folks out there. I helped a friend of mine replace the heater core in his wife's car recently. Dashboard removal required. Wasn't too bad. Seeing her happy to have heat was great.

The town siren is something I miss here. They disabled it a few years ago. This place has changed a whole lot since I was a kid. Years ago we used the siren as a clock, as it would sound off at noon and 5pm and it even alerted the VFD of a fire by sounding off in pulses.
I love the commentary, thanks for providing all of the suggestions and step-by-step directions. I hope you don't get burned by the doorman product either!
I had the privilege of changing the ignition switch on my 2010 Ford Escape with the big 2.5 FWD only! It was not too bad. I too had to lay on my back as I could not find the bottom screw hole that connects the ol' multi action switch to the ignition module. Had a sore back the next day! Always nice to see Mrs. O. Engineer meeting: Question: We have this actuator. Where should we put it? Answer: Lets hide it deep in the dash board. Everyone: YEA! WHAT A GREAT IDEA.
My Mercury Milan had zero maintenance issues, right up until it was totaled by an idiot trying to turn left. Replaced it with a 2017 Escape, and it also has been zero issues.
Eric, you prove everyday that patience is a virtue! Congrats on doing a great job as usual! You also support my desire to hang onto my 98 Camry and 97 Nissan pickup! They never need much and when they do it's pretty easy! Both are in great condition inside and out. The factory white Nissan suffers from sunburn but every couple of years I sand and repaint the peeled spots! To replace both vehicles with new would run me about $75,000 and since I retired I only drive about 5,000 miles a year. Both of my sons are doing very well so I don't need to leave them a couple of low miles late model units. Cheers!
My wife has a 2016 Ford Explorer.I had a problem with the temperature door and replace it with the Dorman. The first one took a c*** after about a year.I had it replaced with a genuine Ford part.Don't use dorman it's junk
Watched the video and reminded me of my 2016 Exploder , same job , just needed to remove the console, complete dash (just for convince) refused to use the "wings of death" for the OEM part... 6 hours later questioning sketchy choices taking on the task was back in business. Keep up the great work!!
A truck turned left in front of me 3 weeks after I bought my 2016 Fusion. Car was totaled, but all the safety equipment worked perfectly. It even used my phone to call 911. Best 3 week car I ever owned.
I had a 6 week car, I was driving to my annual physical when a man in a Honda Accord lost control coming onto the highway via a cloverleaf, crossed 3 lanes and t-boned me. I was driving a Suzuki Vitara and it rolled over. I remember cruising down the highway on my roof trying to steer my way out of it. I was a little sore after that but no major injuries.
I learned that tape the steering wheel like meemaw method the hard way. Had to pull the intermediate shaft in my '19 Ecosport and the brake pedal bracket to replace an HVAC blower motor. I stuck a name brand screwdriver through the shaft pinch bolt hole and through some random hole in the bracketry to both lock it up and hold it up out of the way, and then held everything in place with a small piece of duct tape around the screwdriver handle. Long story short, sliding in on my back, I lost my footing, slipped, grabbed the wheel by a reflex action, shanked the handle from the screwdriver and watched in shock as the wheel went spinning like a fidget toy. Didn't really know what to do because I had never been in that position before. So I carefully, very carefully, turned the wheel all the way in one direction, carefully, and then counted turns in the other direction, very carefully, and then re centered the wheel, then taped that thing up like meemaw always did, with a half roll of duct tape. I will never make that new guy mistake again. Like it was my first day on the job or something. Now I worry about that overpriced clock spring every time I sit down behind the wheel. 22,000 miles later, it's still working, but I'll always remember that lesson from meemaw. Duct tape is much cheaper than a clock spring replacement. THANKS MEEMAW! And thanks Mr O!
You’re killing me with the jokes there Eric. Love the channel. You provide us viewers with great knowledge and insight, not to mention some fabulous humor. Keep on being you. Let’s not forget Mrs. O, she’s pretty great in her own right. The interaction between you both shows me the love you have for one another. No diagnosis needed.
My tiny town Florence az also does that with the siren from the Historic Clock Tower Court house building as well as 2 churches in town for start of school day, lunch, end of school day, 9pm get in side as well Eric O 35:00 @South Main Auto Repair LLC
Holy cow, this video made me appreciate my experience with having to replace the actuactor to the blend door of our '11 Prius...sorry you had to go through all that Eric 😢
I always like to do a wrap of elect tape on the swivel for the socket. Seems to hold things a little tighter and still allows it to pivot enough to work properly and helps it from flipping out of control.
Our VFW blew the siren every day at noon and six PM just to make sure it worked. If it blew at any other time, the volunteers came from home or their other jobs to man the trucks. I went to elementary school next door and several classroooms overlooked the fire station, so some days we had some extra entertainment.
Lucky for your customer that you were there for them. I would have told them they need a new car. Take this one down to Wilbert's and see what they will give you for it.
Great job on pulling the steering column. Like you, I have my fingers crossed that the Dorman product will have a long life. Great job on telling how you find out what to do and the sites that you use to get the information you need.
Probably the OEM? How many factories on the planet could possibly be producing that part? I've bought parts store items that had the ford logo ground off.
I spent the insane money for the SK trim tool and waited many months for it to come in stock. I thought I was crazy but it has saved my butt many times in the last year and I use it so often that I would pay twice the money for another one if this one were gone one day. I might have to order a backup like you did. It just strange that no one else makes anything like it. Not even a Chinese knockoff, as far as I know.
The Ford dealer didn't have the actuator but they had the new bolts for the steering column...... Plausible deniability at its best! 😁 Nice work Eric as usual.
This is still the best auto repair channel on TH-cam. I started watching somewhere around 300k subs and don't know why there aren't 2M. TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO SUB so they can have a good Christmas 🙂
I never knew it was that easy taking out a steering column. I would have thought it would be much more difficult and a two man job. Did Mrs O's dad come by just to sing your praises!? lol
We have those old air raid sirens here too. Once a month at 11am for testing, because of an oil refinery nearby. Huge explosion and fire one Monday when I was doing maintenance in a restaurant by myself since they were closed on Mondays. I wound up sheltering in place in the bar with free beer.
I have just never understood that for moving parts and parts which can and do fail they bury them so deep that even a seasoned miner would have trouble finding them. It is like the fan motor on some vehicles are buried that you have to dismantle the entire dash to get to it.... Why?? These so called designers as part of their training need to spend time out in the field doing the work as a mandatory part of their certification. ( I have always believed this does not matter, Designer. Mechanical Engineer, Structural Engineer, Electrical Engineer etc etc you want your certification then a percentage of your training must be spent out on the field doing the actual work, not just reading a book) I bet if done that then they would think more and position these parts so maybe not instant access but at least more easily accessed. Great video Mr. O thanks :)
Eric, respect to you sir. All THAT for a freaking blendoor? If it was my car, 1 gallon of gasoline in the alternate front seat tank and 1 "accidental" sparkler toss, with the windows closed. Problem SOLVED. Again. Respect. If it was my shop, I would decline ALL of that crap.
well well well, I am about to have to dig into my 17 fusion for this exact reason. there are a couple videos I have found but nothing very good. now I get a video from the best on it!
Yes, it is a good idea to use Locktite on these intermediate shaft bolts. I had trouble finding what i thought was suspension noise. It sounded like bad stabilizer links/bushings or tie rod ends. Finally, I realized that in my Toyota Auris these bolts had become loose and all I had to do was tighten them and there was silence in the suspension.
If you spend much time under the dash; consider one of those dash creepers. Then you can lay on your back and work under it. It was on sale on Amazon recently.
I have one of these in my 2009 Taurus. Replace it every 6 months. Lucky for me easy access. Keep it up Mr. O, luv you vids, always so helpful an entertaining. Best in the business.
Great video. Working behind and under the dash is always a pain. You don't have any real space to work and always lying on your back or side. Super job Mr. O just super.
I bought that tool check plus based on your recommendation. Very happy with it. I lost a 13 mm socket though, and had to order a matching one from the manufacturer, because even though I have plenty of 13 mm sockets, it had to match.
Grew up with the same exact sounding fire alarm. Close enough to hear the fire engines take off with the sirens blaring. When the storms rolled in they'd spin up that siren and just let er eat. Erie feeling when the skies turned black.
Edic, you definitely have nerves of steel for tackling Jose like this. I don’t have the patience for this kind of automotive repair. lol! I guess if I had to do it , I would do it but I wouldn’t be going out of my way to bring in jobs like it’ll lol!!! I’d probably starve and go tits up l Keep up the excellent work
Sure miss my Ford Fusion. Had it 7 years with only 3 repairs, timing belt, water pump pulley, a/c plate fell off. Never took it to a mechanic, did everything myself. Got t- boned and heart raced over 140 and couldn’t open my eyes for 4 hours. Friend came up and prayed for me and my heart went back to normal and I woke up. Anyways good car.
Long live the engineers! What a job... My '07 Civic has the heater fan in a place you wouldn't expect... 99 out of 100 cars it's behind the glove box... mine I had to disassemble the complete dashboard because the fan was located behind the center console, almost up against the bottom of the windshield! That's not a place for one of the most likely things to break when it comes to interior stuff.
Funny something I haven't thought about in years save your channel. I grew up in West Alton N.H. volunteer Fire Dept. Every day at noon, the siren would go off. They stopped it when I was 19.
I've actually had pretty good luck with the Dorman actuators. Had to replace a couple in my 16 dodge charger and they've lasted 6 or so years so far. Funny enough, that's longer than the or ones lasted in that car lol
Tks Ricky, we are the age or same era so as always make me laugh when refering to kris kross yo make a jump jump jump and other stuff from when a was a kid !! Ciao from Montreal !!
My back still hurts from the last time I swapped out a drivers side blend door actuator. There should be a supplemental billing code to account for the wear and tear on technicians bodies whenever they need to work on those things.

Dorman the wings of death that’s funny. I’m going have to remember that one at work. Next time they order me a Dorman part.
I think ICON is getting pretty damn good feedback on their product. Couldn't have picked a better user for their field testing. 👍
What a nice way to start off the weekend. Keep it up Eric
Think of all the repairs you didn’t have to pay for
@@edtillier4421funny!
Ok folks.. that's pretty easy... !! - Really?? OMG what a challenge that was...! Kudos to you again Eric..!!
The "Croc pot" comment was it for this video. All other items paled in context. Another top notch fix. Nice job, Mr. O
Holy cow, this video made me appreciate my experience with having to replace the actuactor to the blend door of our '11 Prius...sorry you had to go through all that Eric 😢
I grew up in Cornwall and New Windsor NY. We always had the noontime siren from the fire department. I miss that so much.
I love even the simple stuff. Gotta keep up on all of it. Best way I learn is repetition.
I bought that little toolkit. Carry it in my travel backpack and it's come in handy so many times!
The Ford dealer didn't have the actuator but they had the new bolts for the steering column...... Plausible deniability at its best! 😁 Nice work Eric as usual.
One and only garage repair shop vlog I watch.Thank you.
Kris Kross and Van Halen, stirred up some wonderful childhood memories 🥲
I wound up sheltering in place in the bar with free beer.
love Eric and Mrs. O, I love the interaction !!!!
You taping up that steering column isn't unlike me wrapping Christmas presents...
I have watched a lot of your videos and I believe this is the most involved video I have seen. Great job as usual.
I thought only 10 MM sockets went missing
Grew up with the same exact sounding fire alarm. Close enough to hear the fire engines take off with the sirens blaring. When the storms rolled in they'd spin up that siren and just let er eat. Erie feeling when the skies turned black.
Love your videos you should take the bad part apart and show what failed on the inside. Would be neat too see what happened.
Edic, you definitely have nerves of steel for tackling Jose like this. I don’t have the patience for this kind of automotive repair. lol!
I guess if I had to do it , I would do it but I wouldn’t be going out of my way to bring in jobs like it’ll lol!!!
I’d probably starve and go tits up l
Keep up the excellent work
You won't have to worry about Dorman parts for awhile. They just had a fire in their warehouse in Colmar, Pennsylvania. Keep your powder dry...
Wera for the win! That kit is what I have on the motorcycle for general tool needs on the road.
Always so interesting to watch your videos Mr 'O'...many thanks
Long live the engineers! What a job... My '07 Civic has the heater fan in a place you wouldn't expect... 99 out of 100 cars it's behind the glove box... mine I had to disassemble the complete dashboard because the fan was located behind the center console, almost up against the bottom of the windshield! That's not a place for one of the most likely things to break when it comes to interior stuff.
The Door Man, I'll pray for you buddy, I think I'd wait for the dealer part. Good luck❤
Dorman called and said "Thanks".
I almost thought i'd have to dial 911 and have them bring the jaws of life to pry you up outta there but as usual you got er done Another great vid
I did a heater core in my Daughters 2005 VW bug. Took 18 hrs taking the whole dash out. Should’ve taken it to the junk yard. But she is happy.
I like your sense of humour Eric
Funny something I haven't thought about in years save your channel. I grew up in West Alton N.H. volunteer Fire Dept. Every day at noon, the siren would go off. They stopped it when I was 19.
You make it look so easy peasy.
Great Repair, Eric. 👍🙏
Nice fix. I hope that Dorman product holds up for a while.
needed to get my non-politics fix here. Eric never fails
I've actually had pretty good luck with the Dorman actuators. Had to replace a couple in my 16 dodge charger and they've lasted 6 or so years so far. Funny enough, that's longer than the or ones lasted in that car lol
Happy Friday!
Tks Ricky, we are the age or same era so as always make me laugh when refering to kris kross yo make a jump jump jump and other stuff from when a was a kid !! Ciao from Montreal !!
Sounds like a Briggs at startup but the ashes flying got me laughing !
My back still hurts from the last time I swapped out a drivers side blend door actuator. There should be a supplemental billing code to account for the wear and tear on technicians bodies whenever they need to work on those things.
