Keep in mind that "waste water" just means any water that has been used for any purpose whatsoever and then discarded, without to regard to whether it contains any significant level of harmful contaminants. If you use a garden hose to rinse off your sidewalk, that water becomes "waste water."

Sierra Space acquiring ULA is probably a better outcome than any alternatives. BO acquisition would only mean the loss of one competitor. This strengthens the two companies. ULA provides existing launch vehicles (although I do not doubt that Sierra Space would want to develop a reusable vehicle for Dreamchaser). Any alternative buyer, I feel, would be worse.

I don’t think it’s really fair to compare the BO and SpaceX tours because we don’t know what happened at SpaceX, or at BO for that matter.
It’s entirely possible that there were entire scenes that Tim Dodd filmed, of similar length to the BO blurred scenes, where it was noticed afterwards that there was some ITAR stuff in shot and SpaceX insisted on cutting that whole section out of the interview entirely whereas BO allowed the dialogue/discussion to remain in the final edit as long as the visuals were blurred. Or maybe SpaceX wouldn’t let Tim go anywhere near anything ITAR related whereas BO did on the basis it could be blurred out in post production.
As I said, we just don’t know the details, but it is actually possible that BO was more open than SpaceX when it came to confidential stuff.

The blurring out wasn't Blue Origin's choice. I also work in the aerospace industry and can tell you ITAR regulations are no joke. There are criminal penalties for violating those. So basically Blue Origin was willing to show more than they were allowed to. Any video like that is going to have to go through a review to make sure it is compliant, and it seems their eagerness to share got checked at that stage, but they didn't want to throw it out so did what they could to make it usable. So, I really don't take the criticism you level against them very seriously since my take on it is completely opposite of yours.

@@DavidKnowles0 That is quite possible. However, I still interpret it totally differently than AA, since he mentions Sierra Space didn't even let him go into the restricted regions, and just gave him some photos he could use. To the underlying point of openness, this seems very open to me. They even let the crew go into this area even though it turned out they couldn't use all of it after, which is more than Sierra allowed. In the end, I think some people just like to hate on BO, but this really isn't anything worth a mention at all.

I'd like to see the something being pointed at, thanks! But I digress. haha). I guess Jeff was considered the focus and was given more priority, even if BO was the one that did the editing. Very smart move for both companies, though I do feel dream chaser needs to at least get a cargo mission going. It seems like it has been quite a long time and still not much to show for it.
It is good to see a company using these next generation of heavy lift rockets in other ways. A space tug is what SpaceX should have done with a second stage on top of the booster while they worked on starship. That being done they could have at least held contracts for the ship to start bringing in a flow of cash. Also could have used it to test 'tankers' and refueling in orbit. The longer this all goes, the more starship seems to be holding them back.

I don't think the blue origin video was censored, as much as the people filming it used specific focal lengths that blurred everything in the background when focusing on a foreground subject. You can see it's not censored when they focus on the background from time to time. So it was really just an unfortunate camera fluke imo. I'm sure there were parts that were deliberately censored, but most of the blurring you see is just a byproduct of the camera lens they're using.

Longer term the winners in the space flight game will be the ones that optimize reuseabilty IMO. It’s basic economics - if a given craft and engines can be reused many times the cost per flight dramatically drops. A key factor in this effort as well IMO is the durability of re-entry shielding. If the shielding requires extensive and expensive refurbishment every flight the cadence of reuse is significantly lowered and the cost per flight rises.

SS buying ULA would be great in every way in the short to medium term and longer term great for almost everyone but I have one concern for the longer term and that is related to the SS’s technology that I’m most excited about - the LIFE habitats. Based on SS’s LIFE roadmap LIFE 550 will be very exciting - over half of ISS’s pressurised volume in one go - but to get to the crazy exciting stuff beyond that needs a 7m and then a 9m fairing so right now that’s New Glenn and Starship respectively. I worry that SS being in competition with those companies as a launch provider might make partnership opportunities more awkward and make it slower and more difficult for SS to progress beyond LIFE 550 on its roadmap. I hope I’m wrong there because that is my only concern.

This feels more like the expansion of the Shuttle and Space Station rather than a completely new endeavor like SpaceX. If this does happen Sierra could possibly become a foundational provider for orbital and lunar expansion. Slow and steady wins the race, as the saying goes.
Sorry, had to edit to add this. They could replace the ISS with a constellation of smaller Stations given their current projects. This is really exciting to think about.

  • @rosswarren436

I sure hope so. Jeff Bozos' Blue Balls Origin also previously bid on ULA. I sure hope THEY don't get them.
But we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Lockheed and Boeing never really wanted to create ULA between them but were forced to by the government back in the 1990s. Since then, neither really wanted to invest in it after the Atlas 5 and Delta II, and Delta 4 were designed and fielded.
That's one reason they were late competing with SpaceX. A nimbler company unfettered by having to please two large, disinterested companies' boards might have done better.
I hope they will survive and thrive. Sierra Aerospace would push for Vulcan to become reuseable far quicker to make taking up their Dream Chaser vehicle more competitive with Dragon. Blue Balls Origin would likely kill Vulcan so it won't compete with their New Glenn launcher.
That was always a weird thing I thought for ULA to buy engines from Blue Balls in the first place, they should have stayed with Aerojet Rocketdyne and asked them to build some Methane/LOX engines.

Lockheed and boeing used to compete with each other and one of them stole plans from the other one and then ula was forced upon them and then stagnation began in the 2000s. @@Smiles10130 true, but regarding the moon, Saturn V production was capped at 15 of them by the U.S. Congress and the Nixon administration. The cost of Vietnam and all the money promised by politicians for "social spending" did it in. We flew 13 of them while cancelling lunar flights for Apollo 18 through 20. Once the production lines were shutdown, people with the expertise in construction laid off, and the tooling sold for scrap it became part of history, to never be again.
ULA might have fielded something like Vulcan quicker in response to SpaceX showing that reuse could be economically and engineeringly viable, but the boards of Boeing and Lockheed weren't interested in spending any money for such a thing, at least not until forced to by the U.S. government, which didn't want to be dependent on Russian engines anymore.

      @Smiles10130 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@rosswarren436 agreed. You have to see the remaining Saturn v's if you haven't already. There was no more competition because the soviets were never able to develop a super heavy lift vehicle. If the soviets got there right before or after, we could've had a race for Mars or a near earth asteroid.
ULA was an arranged marriage. That to be honest I have no idea how the corporate structure works, 2 parents and then a company structure. If there was no space x, then maybe Ariane 6 might have pushed them to make a vulcan equivalent, but they got 1 billion for just existing before. They were smart to buy all the Russian engines before the ban went into affect. Competition breeds excellence and no competition creates stagnation is all I'm saying.

Maybe a good short term plan but Sierra Space would have they work cut out for them to make the ULA products reusable. Not an easy task with a rocket that has only 2 engines. But with the falcons, starship, new glenn and rocket lab all in the hunt, I dont know how big their potential market share is.

Assuming the acquisition goes through, once they run out of Atlas rockets, they'll be left with Vulcan Centaur. The problem with that is that it is doubtful that Blue Origin will be able to produce BE4s at any scale other than at a snail's pace, and even then prioritizing Glenn (I refuse to call it 'New'). They need to ring up SpaceX and try to buy Raptor 3s as they are now more powerful, lighter and are being mass produced.

In the tour with Tim, Bezos said from next year they'd be able to produce an engine every 3 days. The 2 engines used for Vulcan (which are also intended to be reused), should be nothing then.
He also mentioned improved power output, but I don't remember how much. If it is higher than on wikipedia now, it could be similar to raptor 3.
Raptor 3 likely is still a better engine, but we know too little about the latest BE-4's performance/stats to say how much.
Also SpaceX needs a a lot more Raptors than BO (7 vs 33 engines), so if BO indeed can get it to 1 every 3 days vs SpaceX 1 every day, BO might have more supply for ULA than SpaceX.

You’ve nailed the scripting and narration and certainly the research aspects. Unfortunately it seems to go the limit creators need to have cutting edge production values.
