  • Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern's normally quiet Utica-Boonville-Lyons Falls NY line saw a big spike in activity on July 30, 2024 as veteran locomotives 2455 (ALCo C425 built 1964), 2456 (ALCo C425 built 1964) and 2042 (Montreal Locomotive Works M420W built 1973) were dispatched from Utica tasked with retrieving nearly 80 tank cars in storage in Port Leyden, approximately 5 miles north of Boonville.
The video opens in Remsen as the three vintage engines pass by the Depot. Next, the short train is seen passing remote Dean Road in the town of Boonville. The next scene features a look at the train, with the covered hopper now in front, as it trundles along Water Street in the village of Boonville.
Having picked up the empty propane tank cars, the big action occurs as the lengthy freight passes through Boonville on its way back to Utica.
As mentioned in the video, here's a link to switching activity at Bailey's Mill from April 2020:

Interesting: these three vintage diesel locomotives with their tank car train. Very nicely filmed, thanks for showing.

I really wish they still had the whistle stop in Holland Patent during the Remsen Barn FOTA. I believe they had three trips from Utica each day and you could take a ride to Thendara and back if you liked. I would get on in H.P. at 9; am ,spend day at the festival, and take the last train back at 6 pm . All for the whopping cost of $6.00

Thank you for this video. Love seeing the train depot and watching the train move along the tracks. Hearing the sound of the wheels on the track as it moves.

That's an interesting angle @2:54 or thereabouts. Looks like the locomotive is headed straight for the camera. With those horn blasts, it sorta sounds like it too ☺

John are those cars going back in service and are they oil cars or propane?

      Shale oil

    • @railroadingrambler218

They are going back in service. Believe they are propane tankers as they bear hazard placards numbered 1075

Lettered on the tank cars: "Non-odorized liquid petroleum gas" aka propane. It gets something stinky added to it that makes it detectable by nose. 😂 Like my son's socks. 😂 Enjoying the video from Maine!

It's frack oil. They're classed that way because of their volatility. Anytime you hear an environmentalist arguing about pipelines ask them what they think of all those explosive black pearls rolling through the 'poor parts' of every city in upstate New York. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lac-M%C3%A9gantic_rail_disaster

Most people are oblivious to what trains carry, if they knew that and the poor shape of some of the tracks/ rolling stock they wouldn't believe you anyway! 😮

Those cars haul frack oil- I've been watching them roll up and down the line for years now, and you can guess the barrel price *and* the current policy by their movement.
The good news is that there won't be any big price hikes before the election even if the Gulf *or* Venezuela get sticky. 😁😉
