Make your supporting character psychologically or morally or emotionally complete the MC. Reflection characters usually make such good supporting characters.
And... her memory is really good - I forgot details of Bridesmaids despite loving the movie.

The most well-articulated piece of advice on side characters! A lot of educators will just say "make them whole 'people' " and it's just too vague, as that's what you want to do with all of your characters (more so with your MC).

The Bridesmaids example and explanation here is so great. The movie doesn't even shove that down your throat. Subconsciously you get all there perspectives working in a harmonious screenplay.
I didn’t know the importance of side characters until I started writing my novella paraquel series and one of the side characters became a reader favorite. I quickly learnt that this only happens if the side character plays an important role in the MC’s path, just as is explained in the video. Otherwise they’re just a distraction. If the story still works if the side character is removed, I think that’s a red flag.
Who is one of your favorite supporting characters? Does that character tie into the theme of the movie?
Adrienne Balboa, especially in Rocky III with her inspirational speech to get Rocky out of his rut. Naomi's idea that supporting characters coincide with the theme of the story fits Adrienne's character perfectly.
Sean Maguire from Good Will Hunting. RIP to Robin Williams for giving one of the best performances that got me into movies.

Something interesting I thought about was how C-3PO literally serves no purpose to the narrative or plot in Lucas's beloved OT until he gets blown to bits in ep5. 😅
Great example of a side character expressing the theme and being the cautionary tale: Chaz from Wedding Crashers! Two short scenes that were hilarious and were perfect!

I have a strange feeling supporting characters are more important in TV shows than in movies. Maybe because of its length. I don't know why I have this feeling. But I have the impression that movie stories are obsessed with the protagonist and this character eclipses everything around them.
"Who is one of your favorite side characters?" Rocco, played by Mario Adorf in Calibro Milano 9. Mr. Pink, Reservoir Dogs. Bateau, in the Ghost the Shell (technically, it's an animation, not a movie. I haven't watched the Hollywood version yet). All of them tie into the theme of their respective movies.
