    I love it when tourists put effort into learning some basic words.. Even though the stress pattern is a bit wrong (as mentioned in the comments, the stress is usually on the first syllable) it is remarkable and people will most likely sympathize with you.
    great job :)

      That's normally how it goes. It always irritates me when someone asks me not to speak their language. I'm making an effort here man. No one is going to speak a language other than their own perfectly.

    @woltersworld  11 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I did, the place where we stayed and a nice lady in a shop helped me learn the words, they aren't perfect but no tourist will sound native :) hence why we are tourists, at least we try and that is the point!

    Thank you. When we get back to Croatia we will definitely stop by. Opatija was my mom's favorite town in Croatia so I am sure if we take the whole family we will be stopping by :)
    Thank you for the kind words and we loved Croatia, the people, food, sights, towns, just a great vacation spot! Thanks!

    Very cool! Just a hint: in all these words the accent is on the first syllable, except "oprostite", in which it's on the second, so it's pronounced "o-PROS-ti-te" I hope it helps! :)

    Your videos about Spain were ''responsible'' that I was there this September. The video about 5love n hate things in Croatia is so true..
    I'm working in the Croatian tourist board in the town of Lovran (12km from Opatija). So if you ever want to stop here I would be glad to present you my old little town, or make some ''free tour'' because I I really appreciate your work and your videos.
    Have a nice time in Croatia.

      I thoroughly recommend a visit to Međugorje (Medjugorje) in Bosnia-Herzogovina, near Mostar. Its a bit like Lourdes in France with reports of "Apparitions" with the difference that Medjugorje is happening now whereas the Lourdes events took place in 19th century. Even if you're not "religious" it's still worth a visit. The restaurants are cheap and the people welcoming. A conservative estimate puts the number of annual visitors at around 1,000,000. I think the actual number is much higher. I've been twice and on both occasions I didn't want to leave.

    Hello from Croatia :D

  • @johndoezg
    @johndoezg 12 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    just one thing...we don't say "zdravo" as hello...we used to when we were in Yugoslavia but not anymore...Hello could be translated in two ways:
    1. if you come to,lets say supermarket,you would say "dobar dan = good afternoon,"dobro vecer = good evening" or "dobro jutro = good morning",depending of time of day of course
    2. if you are friends with someone you could say "bok" which could be closest translation to word "hello"
    greetings from Zagreb

    • @ReadySaltedCrisps
      @ReadySaltedCrisps 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      johndoezg This one confused me. Most places suggest using Bok, but I guess Dobro Jutro/Dan/Vecer is better to use? I'm staying near Omis in October, so I am eager to learn.

    • @Branca013
      @Branca013 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dobar dan is the one you really can't miss with most of the time, even when a bit drunk at 4 am. Dobro jutro is for 6 am untill 10 am, dobra večer is for 7 pm untill 02 am, but dobar dan works as well, always.
      If you are out partying between 11 pm and 6 am then just do you, maybe best go with bok if it's a bar or a fast food place. Bok is really informal, similar to hi in English but a little bit more personal. I would usually not use bok if I'm not familiar with the people and place I'm walking in to but at around 3 am bok is the safest bet because everyone is more relaxed at that point.

    • @nb44647
      @nb44647 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +johndoezg Daj ne pričaj gluposti, "zdravo" je skroz normalan pozdrav u RH... možda se ne koristi najčešće al sigurno nema veze sa jugoslavijom ili srbijom... i sam ponekad kažem zdravo...

    That's right. only "toalet" has last sylyble most stressed (strongest accent) because it is borrowed from french and we keep that things same.
    RULE OF THUMB: Most of the words (and all except "toalet" in this video) have first or second sylable stressed.
    --Overall, nice phrasing in pronounciation... :) Hope u liked your stay!

    You need to shorten the 2nd half of the words, say them faster with less emphasis. Hard to explain, but if you listen to Croatians speak you will understand. Still a good job, it can be hard for Americans to pronounce our words. Once you get the hang of it it becomes easy to pronounce and even read.

    This is how Slavonia looks like: watch?v=eCn0jijqUec
    The central Croatia is similar to Slavonia, just add more hills. If you like pastry, meat (and i really mean meat), heavy, greasy food, good wines and liquors (if you do, you have to try "rakija", but good one, not cheap), your stomach will be in paradise. There are lot of castles and fortifications because we were in war with Ottoman Turks for centuries, rich nature, swamps, farms and people are not so loud like in coastal Croatia.

    I'm sorry, mate, oriontrail is having fun with you :)
    "Di" is shortened "gdje" = where
    "su" = are
    and those two words are ok, but "peechke", i.e. "pičke" is a vulgarism for certain ladypart. Be careful if some young Croats want to teach you some Croatian words because it will mostly be vulgarisms and curses;it seems like a very joyful activity for youngsters in the Balkan region :)
    Btw. thanks on your great reviews and, perhaps, come to visit some inland!
    Greetings from Slavonia region!
