I love the concept of designing a home to fit your personal needs. Reminds me of that plaque that says, she created a life she loved. I had an empty bedroom for a few years, not sure what I would do with it. And then a Romantic Homes magazine came in the mail featuring absolutely fantastic craft rooms. A light bulb went off in my head. I am creative. I like crafts of all sorts. Why don't I have a craft room? I got busy on that. Some people will say that I need a bed in that room for guests. But I say, what guests? I need a room that compliments my lifestyle. And now I've got it.
I'm all about the space planning! Only then do you know that you are buying the right size furniture to fit the space and will suit your functional needs. Love your videos Julie!
You gave a lot of clarity about the topic and make seem a designed space in easy access to a non-designer . Your use of symmetry in your designs to create balance is quite visible. You are a teacher indeed.
Thank you so much Deepti! That is the best compliment ever if you believe I simplified this process for you 🙏🏻 Makes these videos so worth it for me if I can help you create your dream life through design 💫
I’ve watched this many times but the lightbulb just went off. Design now makes sense. I am the mom of a daughter who designs hotel interiors, my son has been on Mercedes Benz runway twice as a designer, my other daughter worked for Brooks Bothers rubbing shoulders with Italy but I could not pick this up! NOW I get it! I feel free. I wondered where my creativity was. I enjoy the shopping, but now I get how to put it all together. THANK YOU THANK YOU,!💖🦩
Hi Julie, love this video. I’m starting to make notes..I’m 62 buying my own home and your tips are so on point. I will work from home, watch my grand baby and enjoy my home.. simple and elegant / coastal I’m from the islands.. looking forward to next week🙏
Thank you for watching Esther! Then your living room will be doing triple duty! 🙌🏻 Like many of us, our homes need to function in multiple ways to cater to our growing needs. Congratulations on the new home! How exciting! 🎉
Good morning Julie, I love love love this informative video. I did watch it before, the pass two days I watched this video more then 5 times. This is exactly what I need 👏🏿👏🏿🙌🏾👍🏿 thanks again 🙏🏿❤️
Thank you for the advise to design for what inpires you. So often I get stuck in designing around the style I currently have instead of going for what I love now. You are so right that following what you are drawn to uplifts the soul. I'm loving all your design videos !
Your home should speak to you and not speak to what’s trendy (unless that’s what speaks to you of course 😆) Go with your gut, you will always be right Laccie! 🙌🏻
Hi Julie! I started here..This video is so helpful. Get my new notebook with blank pages, rulers and pencils tomorrow. Thank you for suggesting this series.
It's always great to listen to your tips , you are making me love interior designing! We are purchasing a small apartment and your tips are gold! Thank you so much!!
Hi Julie! Thank you so much for sharing your talent! I've recently just purchased my first home with my fiance. He's a modern minimalist while I love traditional hollywood glam. I'm believing that your tips will help us to find balance for both of our styles. Then we can design our home in a manner that we will both love. Please wish us luck!
You got this NaTasha! Prioritize your needs individually, compromise on the secondary pieces, and accessorize using the same color palette. That’s my number 1 trick for making disparate style work together 👍🏻
Hi Julie, loved this video, full of great tips, as always. Can you please make a video of how to select furniture? Like sofa, dining tables - big pieces items. Thanks a lot.
Julie Khuu could you do drop two videos of the series a week? Just bought a house and am literally waiting for these videos to be posted. Can’t wait to see more!
Hi, Julie! I love your videos. I discovered you just a few days ago, but i followed a lot of your advices. Very helpful. Thank you. I love your sticle. You inspired ME a lot
Thank you for making a video explaining function comes first and then the design follows! Too many people ignore function and then can't figure out why it doesn't work.
That’s usually the reason. You fall in love with a piece of furniture, negating scale/ style/ function in the space and then forced to “make it work”! Thank you for watching Jennifer! ☺️
Oh Julie, thank you for the gentle nudge! I've been toying with getting rid of an Ethan Allen Circa hutch top in my great room that holds my deceased Mom's china--which I never use. You've given me a whole new way to think through updates. I've changed the hardware, but there's no getting around the hutch top and china, which dates the entire great room and entryway. This video series will be awesome!!!
Hi Jack! I would think of other ways to keep and display the china, and repurpose/remove the hutch. That way you’ll still have the sentiment, but free up so much room for your needs and style. Try a wall mounted china shelf instead!
Really useful and thought provoking content, it also raises lots of other questions about how we want to live/function of each room. Really excited to watch the rest of the series.
Just discovered your channel recently..and it’s so useful and enlightening! Ugh, this series comes at a perfect time, when I am just about to relocate. I have been doing a lot of planning but I am especially inspired by the idea of being intentional about function and the life I’ve wanted to have.
Awesome vid. I'm in Jamaica, currently in the process of buying my first home and I can honestly say this video has been VERY helpful. Looking foward to the rest of the series.
We’re moving to Boise in a sterile, new home. I’ll have a blank slate and my mind’s been wandering from one room to another with no one room reaching completion. Thank you for helping me organize my thoughts through this video. Can’t wait for the next one!
I love your videos. I've had trouble figuring out what to put on the walls to bring a look together. You inspired me to create something from old picture frames & it turned out fantastic! Thank you for everything.
We just moved in a house and love that you are doing this series. I had no clue how to fill up all this space and tall ceilings but breaking it down to smaller spaces makes so much sense! Thank you
No pressure but I just bought a house that I am currently decorating and with the amount of decisions to take my entire level of stress relies on this series that comes up at a perfect moment in my life! Thank you 🙏♥️
Omg I’m obsessed with your videos ! I can’t wait to see the one with how to find your style !!! I have been debating whether I want comfy farmhouse or Victorian or modern I really don’t know 🤷🏾♀️
I always love your youtube channel ❤️ it helps me to imagine my future interior designs to our upcoming new home as a newly wed😍 hope you continue to give us more inspiring and lovely tips and designs😘
...'Design for the life that you want, not the life that you currently have' jk ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ sooooo on point, Julie👌. I have been working on my home project for some years now....because of the above principle. Many thanks for 'validating' this ..I was almost becoming hard on myself for dragging my project for so long!❤
This was a really helpful video. So many times I find people just throw in furniture for the sake of filling up space, but it doesn’t serve a purpose and they barely end up using it. Such a waste of real estate space.
Thank you Julie! 😘😘 great video!! I’m thinking of using part of my living area for a home office too as I don’t have a separate room for that. At the same time I may use my dining table alternatively. I have noticed that modern living room sizes aren’t that big, so I will have to decide once I start living. Lounging chair is a must I think. At the moment I use my couch all the time. Thanks for this idea but don’t know whether it will fit my bedroom. Always we learn a lot from you. Xx💗💗💗💗
Thank you for stopping by Saro! Definitely measure first to see what your space permits. A single chair + ottoman usually has a smaller footprint than a deep lounge chair and can function just the same! Good luck with your search!
Maybe use a large mirror on the wall the piano faces (the direction you face while playing) to create the feeling of space and nicely reflect the piano? Yes- Julie is the best!!! :)
I like to specify 1 large piece of furniture for smaller living rooms like a comfy sectional. Allow the piano to become the focal point of the room and position your seating facing the piano. Too many individual pieces make the space seem more cluttered.
Julie this will make you laugh. While watching I was thinking maybe I should get a black velvet sofa cause it will hide cat barf (it happens a lot 😒). I watched your video again and what do you know. You wrote on your paper velvet couch to hide stains.😂😂😂
Can you do a video on your favorite dark paint/wall colors like you did for neutrals? I love your channel. I just sent my sister a bunch of your videos!
"Design for the life that you want, not the life that you currently have." Love your empowering, uplifting advice!
I LIVE by this motto, even with my wardrobe 😉
Truth! & this quote is very helpful 👌👌👌
Isn't that obvious? Why would you even bother if you didn't follow that motto?
“You’ll be so much more inspired and chase your dreams if your space uplifts you.” It’s very thoughtful and true. I love your videos.
Interior design has the power to change your life if you’re thoughtful with your approach, I truly believe that 💗

I'm all about the space planning! Only then do you know that you are buying the right size furniture to fit the space and will suit your functional needs. Love your videos Julie!
Exactly!! 🙌🏻 A lot of people mistake sourcing for the aesthetics first. That’s why your scale is often off
Julie you truly have the heart of a teacher! Thank you for all you do!!!
I make these videos as I find easiest to digest. Design doesn’t have to be overly complicated once you break it down. Thank you!! 🙏🏻
Just wanted to say that I am loving your work. That's all!

Yes, hoping it’s a mantra that anyone can adopt to design their best lives ever Julie 🙏🏻
They taught us "form follows function" in physiology, I had no idea it came from architecture! Pretty much works for anything in life :)
