  • Description: I demonstrate how to easily (and quickly) reverse bleed the clutch on a 2009 Aprilia Tuono. This method saves a lot of time, fluid, and can be done without buying any expensive tools - just a few standard syringes and some clear tubing. There is a known issue with these bikes of the clutch fluid turning black from the seals, I did not cover that in this video. I might do another one at a later time on that subject.

    Thanks for the video. I just bled my KTM clutch which is very similar to yours. Worked great. I found some large syringe tubes at an equestrian store for two dollars each. I joined two of them together with hose and a T-joint so I was able to reverse bleed the system in one shot without refilling.

    Great DIY video! Im going to give this a try over the weekend. I've been experiencing horrible clutch drag and I hope this fixes the issue.

      Clutch drag may also be improper adjustment with the plunger on the clutch lever itself, as it pushes into the master cylinder. I had the same issue and bleeding would not have fixed this issue, but adjust the plunger (to start a little deeper) did fix the issue.

    Tip: when choosing to reverse bleed from the slave, it is a good idea to seal the bleed nipple threads with PTFE Tape this ensures you have no dripping fluid to damage your bike no mess to clean up and no air passes by the threads making the process more effective.
    Also straping the lever pulled to the bars over night also helps any micro bubbles or air collect together and rise to the master. this leaves your clutch in the best state and you may even see drag reduced with this. TRY IT! and the rear brake will vastly improve with this trick :D Aprilias do have a working rear brake Honestly lol

      Thanks for the comment Dean. Although I didn't have the issue with my KTM rear master, the clutch slave definitely needed some teflon tape, and I did apply some over the winter. I will probably just go ahead and do that anytime I rebuild a hydraulic system from now on.

      I know it's an old thread, but.... When you strapped pulled lever overnight, do you leave the Reservoir open? Surely not, as it would absorb a lot of moisture from the air, no?
      @g00gl3it Some folks say than once bled, you should take the slave off and tilt it to the right and push the pistons. I am not sure if that's needed or not...
      I got a new cylinder and will be doing it shortly. Getting pretty stressed!

    I believe you are using DOT 5 (they are Silicone based) that’s why the blue color. I advice you change to DOT 5.1 which is the same rate boiling and is much better for seals life. Seals in bad chape = Fluid dark sooner and and water particles will get into your line, that’s why the dark color. You should have seals in bad chape. I recommend change seals in MC and SC. Colored silicone fluid don’t help to have better life span in your brake fluid. Other than that is only a matter of looking colored.

    Hi,
    If I could ask a slightly unrelated question. That Puig shield you have on, does it do the job properly?
    At the moment Ive got an Ermax laminar lip - not too bad but it looks nowhere near as cool as the Puig. So I'm just wondering whether a swap would be worth it.

    A couple things that I couldn't figure out and weren't shown in the video:1. How did you get the tube full of fluid with no air bubbles?2. After the syringe that is feeding the new fluid into the system is empty, how do you get the plunger out without sucking fluid back into the syringe, thus creating air pockets in the tube?

      Matthew Bireley Good questions! I would prefill the syringe with fluid, then flick the line with my finger to get the fluid to flow downward and air bubbles upward. When drawing the syringe back out, you would usually close your bleeder valve first to prevent pulling fluid out. It makes it pretty hard to pull the plunger out of the syringe, but it's doable.

      g00gl3it cool thanks!! I tried to do it earlier and I'm pretty sure there is a bunch of air in the system because the clutch lever it nothing right now

      Matthew Bireley The clutches on these bikes are finicky. I bled mine last year and it already has bubbles in the line. I have to pump the lever several times to get pressure before every ride now. I'll be doing a full bleed again in the spring.

    when you put the hose on the slave its full of air so when you put your first load of fluid in the air is going to be pushed into the slave ?

    what fluid did you use? dot4 or dot5? for clutch fluid, no one seems to agree what is best for the clutch lol

      Daniel Soochan I believe I used dot 4, but it shouldn't matter if you completely clean the system beforehand. It's not a good idea to mix types, so only top off with whatever is already in there.

    Hi, do you have to do reverse bleed as I've done top down bleed by pumping the lever but I'm still getting clutch drag and changing gears is really clunky.

      You don't have to do a reverse bleed. It's just one method that, for me, works faster than the old fashion pump/bleed method. Clutch drag on the Aprilia is common. I bleed it every year.

    I don't know what fluid is in mine. I want to open the slave cylinder check it's condition and used fresh 5.1. How do I do a complete bleed?

      You can do a complete bleed by either forcing fluid up from the master cylinder into the reservoir, and sucking it out (although this might push particulates into the pump and may not be desired) or just doing a manual bleed via opening the bleed valve and letting fluid flow through as you pump the lever. Just replace as much fluid as you take out about two times over and you would have bled the entire system clean.

      You can't actually buy the blue color fluid in the U.S. anymore. I'm not sure where you could get it overseas.

    i have a question regarding tuono gen 1 i bought tuono last week and its only 18,000 mileage on the clock my question is regarding his clutch is it normal in tuono has a hard clutch??or do i need to do something??i have no problem in shifting esp in traffic i can shift easilly to neutral but the only thing is the clutch is so hard.i get tired.

      I'm not sure on the Gen1 Tuono's, but the first thing I would do is tear apart the master cylinder and possibly slave as well, clean them really well and re-bleed the entire clutch system. You may also need to buy a rebuilt kit (o-rings, etc.) if the originals are worn. Some lithium grease works well on the o-rings to keep them lubricated.
