Been following your videos for a while. Great job! Just spoke with tech support yesterday and they informed me that they have moved to Batocera from Recalbox in 2024. I am waiting on my updated SD card to be delivered but would love to see another video like this one that goes over the differences between Batocera and Recalbox. And now that the Raspberry Pi 5 is out - is this something that is easily swappable / compatible with the ArcadeGuys machine?
I noticed you have the 32 inch. I haven't ordered yet cause I can't make my mind up on 32 or 43 inches. I am worried that games may not look as good on the 43 inch. Why did you go with the 32 inch?
They didn't have the 43 when I ordered. If you plan on playing a lot of 4 player get one of the bigger screen sizes (or if you have larger people playing 2 player), but overall 32 will be more comfortable visually for 1-2 players.
Thanks for this review! Wonder if RecalBox will be able to put the game specific borders on the games. Some of the borders that come with their current image really distract from the game experience.
You can do it, just didn't come setup that way in their build. Nothing stopping you from customizing your own image to get it setup the way you want. You can also download someone else's image and just configure the controls to work.
Really appreciate the follow up. If I was to add a game pad, could it be USB wireless? And would I also have to remove player 1,2,etc joystick USB and swap with game pad USB? Ideally I'd like to have everything always plugged In and ready. Great review. Thx!
You could always add in a hub if you wanted to have additional things plugged in all the time, though maybe look at a powered hub since we are drawing a lot from the Pi.
@@LohTec great advice. But would the hub have to be placed into one of the existing joystick's USB slots (ie: player 3) or in an entirely separate slot being unused? I should know this, but I'm very very new to the arcade emulation world. And thanks again!
Depends on which hardware you have. With the new one you would have another USB slot so you can have two hubs, with the older model then yeah player whatever would need to be moved to the hub. You can always get a 8 port hub and move it all to one to make it easier.
Performance is very good. I would say it's not as responsive as a vintage arcade since the LCD isn't as fast and emulation is normally a bit slower, but I was able to beat fighting games just fine.
How would you rate this arcade cabinet overall to what Creative Arcades offers? Their cabinets look great, also, but much much more pricier. Is it you get what you pay for or overpriced? Wondering if the default hardware and game selection is better. I’d definitely appreciate your expert opinion
Don't have a Creative Arcades machine, but it's a much more full-featured machine with more bells and whistles (as well as allowing it to take tokens). It also runs on a PC so performance for 3D games is going to be better. But costs a lot more ($2000 comparing a barebones 4-player 32 inch cabinet) which you could use to add a PC to an Arcade Guys unit/get a wrap/add track ball/light guns/etc and still be less. I'd consider Creative Arcades if I wanted a maxed out machine that I didn't plan on ever upgrading, but the experience is probably 80% as good on Arcade Guys for 1/3 the cost.

To finish touching on upgrading, when they release Pi 5 or even if I wanted something else, one of the benefits of these machines is that I can upgrade and customize as I want after purchase? I’m not basically “stuck” with the games and operating system that’s initially delivered to me?
Yes. Think of the cabinet as 4 USB controllers and a TV since that's basically what it is. You can unplug those controllers and TV and plug them into anything you want. Creative Arcades is the same but comes with better stuff to begin with.
You'd be better off adding the psx version. Namco system boards emulate too slow on Pi right now. You can always swap in a PC or updated pi down the line.
When you buy one of these, does it come with all the games, or do you have to buy an image and do it yourself to make it work? Just curious about how we obtain these games from NES, SNES, Sega, Neo Geo, Turbographx 16, etc.
For clarity, I'm curious because I have a complete set of roms/emulators on my PC already and not sure if this is worth the price versus getting a cabinet and doing my own thing. I'd rather not have to do the work which is why I'm looking into this machine.

There are a lot of arcade games but also a lot of console games. Most every 2d arcade game will be there though. And it's Normally easier to send them wirelessly since the file system for a pi doesn't play nice with windows but it can be done that way
Anyone with feedback if the Light Guns work ok with the games? Also, anyone try plugging in the Recalbox 512 build for more game goodness and how did the system and cab run?
Depends what you mean by classic, but most games 1990s and earlier will be there. Exceptions will be Namco system games but that's more due to the Pi4 power.
This looks more like an expensive emulator with thousands of games I’d never play rather than an arcade system. When I think “arcade” I think of games I’d throw many quarters in to try and beat. Not seeing those types of games here, just console.

Ya I'm not a fan of the Tube TV border for the normal arcades. I'll have to see how to change them too.

How do some of fighting games work? Like street Fighter 2 or Mortal Kombat 2? Is the game play smooth?

Yes. You can also just hide consoles entirely and setup a combined arcade view.
Does this include Daphne games like Dragons Lair the cartoon version?
The original version did but it didn't work for me, the updated build doesn't have it. You could always add it in.

Recalbox 512 would work just fine once you setup the controls.

It has Neo-Geo/System16/CPS games so most 2D quarter munchers are included. It's just the 3D games that aren't very well emulated yet.

Yes, a good PC can do much more, though emulation of some newer arcade systems is still lacking
