- After a couple disappointing Lew's purchases, I decided to break the "monkey see monkey do" brand infatuation you get from watching TH-cam fishing videos. The redesigned Abu Garcia Veritas rod and the new Abu Garcia Max Pro reel. If this combo fishes as good as it looks!

Great Video. I appreciate the information. I'm contemplating getting the Lew's Inshore Speed Stick HM40 Rod with the matching real. I think I may have to re-evaluate. Please do a review after you have used it so we can get an update on how it performed.
My misfortune with Lew's products is in no way the standard of the Lew's label as a manufacture. Lew's provides products to some of the top TH-cam anglers as compensation for promoting their products and of course those anglers will always provide excellent reviews. All manufactures suffer defects. The lesson learned here is simply don't get caught up in the "monkey see monkey do" advertising industry of TH-cam like I did and sell out to what you see your favorite TH-cam angler using. Make up your own mind and take those thousands of review videos with a grain of salt.
The Veritas range of rods are absolutely phenomenal in my opinion. I have picked up 1000s of rods and I keep going back to the Veritas. It's like they are custom built for me. From the balance to the weight and of course the good price they are well worth it.. the only other rod that I found feels as good is a Duckett.

That Veritas is the newer version and was backordered everywhere I looked. I ordered it from Tackle Warehouse when it finally showed back in stock. Hopefully availability is better now.

I just got a Veritas 7'3" MH this summer and I really like it, fished it a bunch. I don't like Winn grips so the eva foam grip (or cork) is my preference. The tip is nice and soft but there's no problem setting the hook with a jig or creature. The small guides are fine that's why it's so light. I loaded a reel mostly with 12 lb big game and a topshot of 14 lb fluorocarbon so there's no knots, I don't like it if knots hang up on the guides. I use an fg knot on my spinning rods no problem, just be sure to trim the tag of fluoro off all the way.
Yeah, the grips show staining a little too easy. Would be interesting to see cork grips on the Veritas. Appreciate the comments.

I’m looking at a few abus to add to my collection sad you had such a poor time with lews ive loved all of my lews products, (got 3 rods, two reels) I’ve actually had my Mach 2 spinning reel for over 4 years and still is absolutely fantastic but I also love my abu Garcia revo X and revo S combo
Actually I really like my Lew's Mach Crush rod. Although all of the eyelets are off centered to the left, it's still one of the best balanced rods I've ever owned. Unfortunately the spool issue with the reel rendered it unusable. Thanks for the comment.

I had the same spool problem when I first bought my Mach Smash combo. I found out anything over 10lb test it spools weird. Idk what it is but still love the white out combo! Looking to purchase the Veritas soon.

When you were having all these issues with your Lews products, did you ever contact their customer service to address the issues?
I did not address the issues with Lew's directly. I normally follow the dealers defective merchandise return policy. I purchase most of my tackle from Tackle Warehouse who I believe have a protocol for communicating defects back to the manufactures they distribute for. Some dealers will allow you to keep the defective product as in the case of my Mach Crush rod, which is actually a really nice rod and one of my favorites (if you can ignore the eyelets all being offset :)
I have had lots of rods as well, from spinning rods, fly rods, and bait casters, I have 5 Abu Garcia rods from 6' (Ike EZ Cast I gave to my 7 year old Son) to my 7' Vengeance rods. They were less expensive than my Kast King setup that I have and I like it better. When it comes to knots and leaders... I use 15, 20, 35lb braid from Reaction Tackle to a 8, 12, 20 lb leader (respectfully). On the lower end of the braid to leader I use a double Uni and never had any issues but that knot is way to large for the larger diameter lines. So I use an Alberto Knot. That is one of the smoothest knots to use thick mono in my honest opinion. I have been using this on my Kast King for months and not had any issues. That causes less backlashes as well since the line is not getting hung up on the guide as you toss the bait. I switched to this knot on this rod for the simple reason of reel adjustments and learning the setup. I threw about 4 baits/lures due to backlashes caused by the braid to mono leader. That might be helpful to someone if they are having the same issue.
I use both lews and abu. I have the 7ft mh tp1 and it's a true fast action rod. I don't know if u have any experience with a heavy action rod but if u do u would understand what a broomstick feels like. The first 10 inches has a very noticeable bend when it loads (lews tp1).
Unfortunately with no "standardization" applying to rod manufactures, a 7' heavy/fast can vary in bend and tip speed between manufactures. One from Abu Garcia may feel like a med/heavy while one from Lews may feel like rebar.

@@CrunkyOMan83 The Veritas came from Tackle Warehouse ($99.95) and the MaxPro came from Walmart (I think it was $69.98 or something like that). Total for the combo in the video was around $170 plus tax.

I have been having a horrible time with three lews rod two of the tips were so delicate that the tip broke in storage or out in the field the last one had the last eye lit o ring on the tip come right off not sure if im being to rough with my rods or just material not holding to spec one of the rods had felt soggy on the tip after fishing in cold water and broke when i tried to grab my lure

Yes, the grips do show staining and they don't clean off very well either.

I have used Stren moss green for 30 odd years I fish a lot a rivers so braid doesn't work for me I like the nano guides !!!!!

I found it at Walmart in a blister-pack hanging with all the other reels. If you've looked there but didn't find it, they may have sold out.

I have never bought a fishing pole on u tube or entrant... Me other's around me and how they work. I'll stick with ABU Garcia first there's only one reason I got a Lew's reel it was on sale at Walmart for $12 Lew's Xfinity combo yellow and silver great looking. But I've used ABU Garcia from the 90's and still keep them first. Just me that's it. The poles suck now a days with the new carbon and less fiberglass they just brake on people faster. Not like my poles from the 2000 fiberglass and flexible. My new Lew's Xfinity 10 reel and pole is medium light and it's the same as my medium baitcaster pole same brand that's not right at all what happened Lew's.
Abue garcia products is one of the best and one of the best price and is be inthe fishing for long time

Actually the Mach Crush with all the eyelets off centered to the left (aka "Left Eye Lew's" or "The Crooked Crush") is my favorite rod which I use allot.
@@isaidyeahfishing2785 mostly just me being snarky which was bad on my part. I would like to hear more info on the reel itself though. If you've got a newer video or post one soon let me know. I had a custom rod ordered and I'm looking for a white reel to put on it.
@@volunteerbassing I actually found the MaxPro at Walmart in a blister pack with their other reels. I believe it was $70. I read somewhere that it was Abu Garcia's revived version of the "ProMax" which was also available at Walmart. It's likely that the MaxPro is an Abu Garcia / Walmart exclusive reel much like some of Lew's bait casting and spinning combos (sold only through Walmart).

I have the same problems wuith the machine 2 the line spool more to the left side and the line gard was amess 2 o 3 to de left and the other to the right dack to dicks and replace
You should really call Lew's customer service when you have an issue. They are great to work with. I had an issue with the locking nut on a cheaper lew's American hero baitcast combo. They took care of it. I have many of their products, in many variations, and they are all excellent. I'd put my lew's stuff up against Abu Garcia any day. Either way, you can't go wrong.
Fortunately I purchased everything from Tackle Warehouse. The large retailers and wholesalers have a protocol where they communicate customer returns for manufacture defects directly to the manufacture. Actually my favorite baitcasting rod is the Mach Crush with all the eyelets off center. I use it in several videos. Appreciate the comment.
