I lost everything that I owned, my business of 25 years, my car my motorcycle my town. I escaped with only the clothes on my back. But I lived.
85 others weren't as lucky as I was Nov 8th.
All because of no maintenance on a almost 100 year old power line owned by PG&E.

@Fred Mitchell Y'know it started as a grass fire - the area had been burned to the ground exactly 10 yrs earlier. The braket that held up the lines broke. They were supposed to have repaired it yrs earlier.
Thank you for the tribute to the lives lost at the end. I worked at a grocery store in Paradise and lost a handful of customers to the fire that day, along with my home, my job and my town. I'm so heartbroken for those who were lost that day 💔 RIP to those 85 and the others who have passed since the fire.
Hearing yet another person get their everything stripped away from them breaks my heart. I hope you are doing well and are staying safe now!

I was a inmate firefighter durning the Carrfire in Redding And The CampFire in paradise. I was a 1st saw for my crew we worked day and night I remember doing a 48 hour shift on our first day responding to Paradise words can’t explain how we felt but we did this job to our best abilities. Inmate type one hand crews are will go constructing handline until the sun comes up we too were 24hr resources. I just want to thank all Fire men I was Incarcerated but remember shedding tears over paradise...
It's sad to hear about Mr. Binstock. I did work for him and his wife years ago when they lived on Humbug rd. in upper Magalia. Because he worked primarily in Europe for the film industry, he had a very continental accent. British, almost. Very nice couple, Mr. and Mrs. Binstock.

seeing a grown man cry at 13:02 was hard to watch. I lived 3 hours from there when the fires tore through. I have pulmonary disease and it was so hard to breathe I had to stay home most of the time. I watched almost live video of people streaming their escape. It's so hard twitch. I can't imagine the pain, grief and trauma those people are still dealing with today. almost 2 years later.
Seeing a grown man cry was hard to watch?? Where have you been living for the last 20 years.. under a rock? This isn't the 1950s anymore. People are not ashamed of being a human anymore.
I am so very sorry for all the lives lost and their families. My heart is bleeding for them
I feel guilt. We left to many of our most vulnerable behind. I pounded on doors, tried wake people up and get them moving. But when things started to get hairy I left. I looked at houses I hadn’t gotten to yet, and I drove away.
Ken, you tried at least a little. I lot more than most. You didn't know it would be so bad. I don't think you need to feel guilt. Even so, give it all to God. He is the one who can clear all guilt and give you light in your soul.
It's okay Ken Duncan!! At least you tried! No one would've been able to get to all the houses, and I thank you deeply for helping as much as you could, putting your own life on the line for random people!! :) If only there were more like you who actually cared....
You did your best, we couldn't ask you to have done any more. You helped, you survived, and you will continue on. Live for those who are no longer with us.

You cared and you tried your best, that is all anyone can do and we thank you for your efforts, and are glad you made it out, you had to go, tragically, there wasn't time to save everyone. Paradise was where I grew up from about age 12. I've seen quite a bit of footage but I don't recognize much of anything, I see by drone coverage or pictures, but I'm sure our place was no doubt burned down, including out-buildings and our barn, and about 18 acres of orchard, fruit trees and woods where we played. I won't even go up there now, as I don't want to see it. I'm sure Daddy's medical office must be gone along with the down-town area, and it's just too sad to see. Probably all the area where we used to go down Honey Run Road on our way to swim at "Nelson's Bar" on the Feather River was involved in the fire, I guess part of the hospital was saved. What a tragedy, so sad for everyone. I had not been to Paradise since about 2001, after I had spent about two years finishing family business, and had been gone when Camp Fire devastated everything. I now live two states away, north and inland of California. I doubt I'll ever go there as it would be heart-breaking to see it now. I'm sure I knew people up there still, when the fire occurred, and my heart goes out to them all. I can only begin now to watch some footage, but just for a little bit, but I don't recognize much and will never go back there. I have not inquired about any friends, just to sad to try.I know some people are re-building; and they are so brave, trying to rise up out of the ashes like the Phoenix, and I wish them all well and hope they find happiness after their loss.
Most of those lost were older community members. Hopefully the take away is that communities do a much better job at planning for saving the lives of the older and disabled citizens of their communities. If all those lost were children it would be an outrage with millions raised to avoid it from happening again. That same outrage should be for everyone.

I lost my aunt and uncle in the campfire and many of my
Patients. I lost myself and my family lost me. I just moved back to paradise about 4 months ago. It was like hitting reset and this time was more intense. When I came back I had no power no water and 2 of my 4 kids. Now I have my new home and power and water and 3 of my 4 kids. Yet I’m more lost than I’ve ever been. There’s no help anymore and people’s support has dwindled away slowly. Thank god for Christmas and people helping. But outside of that it seems that there’s no way to recover and no way to get past it. Life will never be the same. I miss myself and I miss my life. I dont leave my property. I stay home at all costs. It affects my kids my family my friends. I literally can’t leave my property or I get ill. I cant do it. How do you even function as a parent or as anything when you can’t even file for disability or cash aid because you know you can’t leave home? Life will never be the same. Yet I cant leave this place. I cant leave this town. It is home.
Sammie H. if you need help with filing for disability or aid i will help you do that... or anything you need help with... i live in penn valley but im able to maybe help you ... p.m. me if you are at all interested in getting some help... And that will help your children too. Think about it ... in the meanwhile i will keep you and your kids in my prayers with all of the people affected by this horrific event...
Like the Phoenix that rose from the ashes, Sammie, you WILL survive and time will help heal the sorrow and pain, but you will never forget! I don't even know what friends I lost in the fire but no family, but I'm sure the fire went over their graves in Paradise Cemetery, and I worried about that. I can't go up there because I don't want to see the ruins of what I left behind, besides my childhood and teen years there!

Thank you for your kind thoughts. Indeed, the outpouring of kindness from so many that has helped make this disaster easier to go through, even though we all still feel the pain day in and day out.
Was on 1 of the inmate fire crews and all we could do is cry... Knowing we couldn't do much.

it's amazing to look at the location using google maps and see so many homes lost, but others right close to those lost are still there
Mike Thomas yes. I spend a lot of time on Google maps. And wow paradise now. Is so sad. So many people sold their lots cleared for as little as $4000. There are still so many left for sale. 😒
There were a few people who refused to leave, and who got up on their roof with a garden hose and just kept spraying water on their house! I truly don't know how they didn't die from inhaling all that smoke but they did, somewhat of a miracle!
So so so sad. I'm so sorry. Watched the fire from my porch in Oroville. Too many stories too close to home literally. My mom's friends almost died. Friends list everything. Too sad to list. Hugs neighbors.

I have only been up Skyway once since the fire! I keep saying I need to go back, but it is just so emotionally difficult. I didn't loose anything, I didn't live in Paradise, but I was at the shelter day and night for a week doing whatever I could to hep. I was so scared that the fire was going to keep going and we would loose Chico as well. The first responders did an AMAZING job and I will forever appreciate their hard work.

I am so sorry for the people and families. I have been trying to donate a beautiful piano to a local church or school, or even a family for about a year. I grew up in Palo Cedro, CA. But live in Arkansas, the piano is in storage in CA.

I lived there for 38 years. Raised my kids there. But, where to go? If a fire hydrant isn't next door, fire insurance is $300 a month, if you can get fire insurance. Home prices have skyrocketed. I read that two new homes have been sold. Both for over $500K. No house is for sale in Paradise has sold for less than $300K and no house in Magalia(The Pines) has gone for less than $200K. I'm priced out unless I forego fire insurance.

When that had happened I had recently lost my boyfriend and then I was living with my friend, her niece was living up there and she lost everything. It was the saddest thing that I couldn't even imagine that 85 people lost their lives in minutes and I have felt every soul being lost (I am an empath) and it was so hard because I felt all their pain for their lose, it's something I don't want to go through ever again because I wasn't sure if I could handle it, and I couldn't do anything about it either which made it hard for me because I know what they went through even though I wasn't there I felt their pain. I was praying for all those people that lost their lives and also for the survivors of that fire. 🙏

when I was up there years back, Magalia had more people living there than Paradise.

Even though the worst is over, it's a long hard road for everyone - both those who have the will and the funds to rebuild and those who don't. Many have left California. Some of those have no funds to rebuild. Some of them don't want to go back. Campfire victims have been and will be building new lives, one way or the other.

People need to grieve, to care about what happened, it is far more healthy than just telling then to "stay strong" and it was NOT a "total mess" -- it was their homes and their loved ones in many instances! It is normal and necessary for people to relate what happened and make comments, it helps them heal! Time for YOU to grow up! No one is forcing you to read the comments! When oh when will America start Forest Management, and homes of mostly metal and fire resistant interiors. But no, our government wastes money on dumb things like buying hotels for homeless instead of giving them jobs cleaning and clearing our forests and management. Put those druggies to work instead of letting the drugs into this country, such a waste of money caring for Junkies and Druggies. There are still people living in tents and cars. They make u go thru hoops to get help,they deny people for no good reason. The Governor isn't helping or has any intentions of rebuilding this town.
Don't give too much authority to the State. And, certainly don't expect it to take care of you. I can say thank you to my Farmers insurance agent Brad Jacobson who I trusted and who helped me see that I shouldn't go with the skimpiest policy. And, I say thank you to God, who cares for all of us.

Why people moving back to the same place? I don't understand that. I get it that it is perhaps the only place you know, where you grew up.....but with California's fires happening more often then not.....I would not be moving to the same area.....I would even consider moving out of state. I don't know....just my opinion California is NOT worth all this pain and suffering and all these fires happening year after year......NOT WORTH IT.
Well moving out of state you still will get disasters like out Midwest tornados in the south hurricanes in the west earthquake,and wildfires and up north insane blizzards and other snow so basically no where in the United States is safe from the weather

I now live in Charlotte, NC and we do not get hurricanes or tornadoes this far inland...California gets fires every single year....and then you have the mudslides or earth-quakes.... I'll take my changes moving somewhere else.

I've lived in the Northeast for over 50 years. I've never lost a house because of a blizzard.
because most people have friends and family that lives in the area, most people have lived here there whole lives, it's a tight niche community where everyone knows each other, and it's a quite peaceful beautiful town in the mountains.
Not many places like this exist anymore. why would they want to live anywhere else,yeah there are fires and power outages all the time but it's a risk you take if you want to live in a beautful place like this. other places have there own disasters to deal with too.
I live in this town and will stay here. If I lived in any other area of california though I would probably move.
Colorado has it's share of history with horrible fires as well. There was a strong push in the way that homes and businesses were constructed there to combat against this throughout the history there as you see a lot of brick built structures there. Longer term that's one the considerations. Stick built and say modular homes and standard construction techniques seem not suitable there. Personally i'm just not sure what to think when I see cheaper standard construction stick built houses pop up there again. Goes without saying there will need to be strong ordinances there as well. This is devastating.

California has been going thru issues the past twenty or more years. They are no longer the leader they thought they were.
PG&E and other neglectful forces played a role, but not like the neglect and manipulation of the fossil fuel industry that has knowingly driven this climate crisis to a state of emergency. Expect to see much more of this type of catastrophe in the future. Sadly, this is just the beginning.

The rule s and regulations set by the city are so strict now it just not cost effective to rebuild. Insurance at minimum will cost almost 4k a year as of the year 2020. That's Almost $300, month and it will onely cover 80 percent of your house and belonging so sorry but that's legal gouging...........
It's a reflection of how much the insurance will have to pay if and when the house burns again.

it was arson and the fire chief left the state. HUNDREDS of dead unreported, huge lines of cars. the whole thing lined political pockets. the fire also increased the drug-user population in nearby Chico CA.

9/6/2020. I still cry when I go back to my lot. All the trees are dead. Dirt is all that’s left.
2 yrs and only 375 building permits have been approved. The cost of rebuilding is prohibitive .
now we have to clear the land again cuz brush is growing & is a fire hazard. Taxes still have to
be paid, everyone needs to be paid & I’m left with nothing at the age of 79 in ill health..

These fires were caused by laser attacks, because he's a conspiracy nut case.
Ember attacks frequently destroy houses and leave the surrounding vegetation intact. Basically, the trees you can see are not a threat to your home.
It's the trees and houses about a mile up wind.
