1970 Honda Trail 70 - Will it run? Carburetor cleaning and more

  • This little dirt bike has been sitting for a while, so it needs a little love to get it running again. Does it need the carburetor cleaned, or will it take more than that to get it back on the trail?

    Maybe that switch on the gas cap is to seal the vent so that you can lay it on its side.

    I see many videos where they tell you how to fix things but dont actually show you how or disassemble anything on camera. I know these arent necessarily tutorial videos and but they do a great job at educating

    Hello lab coat, Paul, I forgot to mention I love watching your videos you are so clear and I appreciate the humor. Also, I’ve been repairing motorcycles since my first motorcycle in 1965 when I was 15 years old, watching your videos has revitalized my interest in getting an old bike and fixing it up.

    Watching your videos I slowly set my mind around preparing to run my Vespa lx-v 125, which has not been used since 2019. I still need to wait for warmer temperatures, today it is 0*C in my garage.

    Hello lab coat, Paul, as I mentioned before my other comment that red finned thing you’re calling a resistor is actually a selenium rectifier. It’s a poor rectifier because of its high resistance. Honda made use of this property to limit the charging current and thereby act as a poor voltage regulator. If you replace that selenium rectifier with a silicon rectifier and a voltage regulator, your battery will last longer and battery voltage will be stabilized.

  • @ronjaybarnett
    @ronjaybarnett 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Hello lab coat, Paul, that thing that you called a resistor is actually a selenium rectifier. Early use that instead of silicon rectifiers because the resistance of the rectifier also allows the selenium rectifier to act as a voltage regulator. So the resistance limits the amount of current the alternator can put to the battery. very crude a cheap.
    Hope this helps

    15:45 that is not a resistor . it is a selenium rectifier or basically a very old form of diode . these have huge voltage drop so you can not test them with a regular multimeter and they smell very very bad when they fail. you need 4-5 diodes in series to emulate a selenium, rectifier like this. but if it gets to that point i personally would upgrade the whole charging system to something more modern.
    also a 6v leadacid charges at upto 7.4v and floats at 6.7 to 6.9v , so at 6.3v your charging system is not doing enough , these days you can buy 4 sony lifepo4 26650 cells from battery hookup for 6$ , rearrange them in 2s2p for 6ah 6v that will outlive any leadacid ever made.

    • @keeperofthegood
      @keeperofthegood 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      At 6.3v the selenium rectifier is failing, as their internal resistance increases until its all over for them. I'd say the magic smoke will come out of that sooner than later, and aside from the awful smell it is also fairly toxic too. Good to keep it physically in place for the looks/history, but cut the leads off and put in a good modern charge system for sure.

      @@LabCoatPaul There are a few forums and postings on updating the charge system of this specific bike. The system in place now is old school, half wave voltage to the battery and this is known to shorten lead acid life. Just a quick review of the wiring diagrams and the mods others have done, I would say any 6v four pin AC regulator module will work for you (of which there are very few on the market). There are a couple things to note, C1 and C2 have a center tap to the 'ground' frame of the bike, the battery negative is not connected to that ground, the battery is connected between C1 and C2, and the C2 line is fed through the ignition switch so you would need to understand if that switch is routing the C2 line to other systems than just the battery as you would be re-directing that line to the regulator. The wire points for your AC are from the C1 and C2 points. Good enough for a starting point though. And yes, I have had selenium rectifiers go up in the cloud of magic smoke, it is incredibly foul.

    4:05 That is a diode not a resistor. It's called a selenium diode. They all have that very unique shape. The old ones tend to go bad and you can replace it with silicone.

    Hey Paul, love your videos, you're doing great job, explanation is thorough and without extra fluff.
    I have one question, my gy6 157qmj has charging problems. I was going down the road and my dashboard,turn signals, head/tail lights, alarm system, battery fuse and anyting electrical you can think of blew out. I tore everything apart and cable coming from stator was pinched, green(ground) and yellow wires were melted and shorted together. I had replaced stators in the past, 2 or 3. I am getting ac power on litteraly every wire and even on frame of scooter. I replaced stator with new one, everything same, besides i have not installed any new lights or dash because i am afraid it will blow again. What im wondering is on every stator i have replaced all yellow and white wires are already grounded (wire starting the coil is already soldered with ground). What im wondering is why it blew all my electrical system. Any thoughts? Maybe i wrote too much. Any advice is appreciated, thanks 🙏

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The yellow and white wires should not have continuity to ground. Chinese scooter parts tend to have very bad quality and I wouldn't be surprised if the new parts you bought have something wrong with them. If you want to pay a little extra and have your problems go away, buy the 11-pole upgrade kit: www.rollingwrenchdenver.com/products/gy6-charging-system-upgrade-kit-8-pole-to-11-pole-stator
      You may be able to find the same kit at a better price, but I've tried the rolling wrench kit and it worked great.
