Let us not forget that the only other jockey that I know of to win the great race is our local boy from whanganui New Zealand , is Brent Thompson who rode four different horses to win the Cox plate starting with Fury's Order when the media proclaimed young Brent as a boy going to do a man's job . Cox plate is the absolute peak in Australian racing. Only the best are invited n in limited numbers. The way Winx always able to pull away at the end is why she is The best of the best of the best.

From what I remember, they are invited based on that years form. Hence the title best of the best race for serious punters and enthusiast. There are several contenders for the best horse ever. But they are mainly horses based overseas. And That title is a hard call (due to bias and favoritism and I'm a bit guilty myself). It is best described as Horses for courses I guess!! (Sprinters, Mid distance and Stayers). Phar Lap was able to achieve both as a mid-distance and long stayer (probably a bit too big and heavy to be a sprinter). Why Winx? IMHO, because of the fact that she won the pinnacle of aust horse race, the Cox Plate, 4 out of 4 and that unbeaten record of wins. Probably never to be repeated in history again. I should correct myself and say that Winx is the best Mid Distance horse ever.
I remember watching in my pajamas late at night here in New Mexico, USA, feeling awful that Kings Will Dream was pulled up...amazingly, he healed up and has come back...I'm waiting to hear if Winx is in foal....I miss her so much! Racing is not the same without Winx! Thanks for this video!

The big difference in her was she wasnt flogged as a 2 or 3 year old.........still growing at that age....some grow faster and stronger earlier,win a handful of races,then succumb to injury as a result...if an entire or mare can go to stud.....same can grow into a flop when mature......smart work by owners and trainer with winx
But neither was she overly protected. She had 12 start at 2 and 3 at distances ranging from 1100m to 12F. That is still a fairly heavy schedule for any filly. ... or colt for that matter

Scott Simpson I find her difficult to weigh up myself. Stunning record but I reckon 25 of the 33 were pretty soft wins. She still had to win them which is an achievement in itself. Humidor and Happy Clapper both ran well against her once or twice and Hartnell is a good horse but clearly limited at that not quite elite level. After that you've got Highland Reel and Benbatl who she raced once each. I would have liked to see her take on a couple of better horses for three or four races in a row. If she'd racked up this record between 1980 and 2003 I'd have said she was the best horse in history. Doing it between 2015 and 2019 just leaves a couple of empty columns in her ledger for me.
master lays We did notice her but after 2016 it just became a bit of a joke really. Racing the same ordinary opponents and 70% of the field made up of her stablemates. It was like watching Shaun Marsh batting against school kids. It was never anything close to watching Lara batting against Warne and McGrath or Border taking on the WIndies. More like Shaun Marsh batting against Peter Siddle. She was just clearly a big fish in a little pond.

R Well for starters dickhead, Criterion and Highland Reel ran against her in 2015 so you might want to read my original post again. So that leaves Benbatl. What I said was after 2016 all her races were boring. He was never going to be able to beat her, he's only ever been assessed as being as good as Hartnell and Happy Clapper so that was boring too. He's just a decent horse who to date has not been able to run a place in a Group One race in England. As I said, she was an A Grader who only ever competed against B, C and D Graders. Boring. Once you've flogged the B and C graders for 2 years it's really time to step up to A grade. But she never did so it just became a bit of a lame media circus from 2017 onwards.
The thing is with Winx she was no doubt a top class horse durability unquestioned the issue is the horses she beat if you look at their form its just not the very top class , this is not to say she wasnt great but the horses she beat certainly were not.

There are those that jump on any “Winx” video and denigrate it.....saying she didn’t run against quality.............first off,unlike a swathe of European races 4 or 5 horses in a race is rare....doubt any other horse could have raced against so many and won 33...haven’t seen it in Europe....so in 33 races most were 8-10 horses....and more in others.....so we will call it 330 other runners...........they would have you believe there was no quality,all donkeys with 3 legs......wankers
I agree they run and win six races in England where there are legal pacemakers which makes a mockery of the sport to achieve higher ratings. After 6 wins they are proclaimed champions and retired to stud and there are many who fit that category. Winx raced in the best races over a long period of time and always came out on top that streak of hers will likely never be repeated in our lifetime.
Here's an interesting comparison Enable vs Winx. Across 2018/2019 Winx ran 11 times in 10 Group one races. The rating of her best opponent in those races ranged from 115-123. Four times there was not a 120 rated horse in the race. Only once in those 11 races were there 2 X 120 rated opponents in the same race. Across 2018/2019 Enable ran 7 times in 6 Group Ones. The rating of her best opponent in those races ranged from 122-128. Enable never ran in a race without a 122 rated horse in it. Four of those seven times there were 2 or more opponents rated 122+ I'm not saying Enable is better than Winx. I think Winx is the better horse overall. But Enable certainly raced harder opponents and more of them more often. It's impossible to know whether Enable would have handled Moonee Valley but I'm sure if Enable took Winxs place in the Turnbull and QE Stks in 2017/2018/2019 she would have clearly beaten Kluger, Youngstar, Gailo Chop and Ventura Storm over 2000 at Flemington and Randwick.
Winxs opponents got stale and after a 4 year domination drove the good horses away. Humidor in the 2017 cox plate was a worthy challenge. Benbatl has done good things. The best race she has ever raced in was her first cox plate. Highland reel, criterion and many other g1 winners. Criterion got snubbed but winx dominated. Still think people saying she's the best ever is a stretch because she never really went out of the comfort zone, just did the same things over and over. But she did them really, really well.

I think it’s fair to say, with all things being equal, Enable would have streeted the likes of Youngstar and Ventura Storm. It would have been interesting to see Enable in a hot 7F race, which is what we would have seen had she raced here. Once you get over distance you can make your own luck on the best horse. Winx winning streak really has no equal in that regard.
Don't get me wrong Marcus, I too think Winx was exceptional. However I categorise her as one of the best, not the best. Her record is amazing, but she needed much harder testing to be the best. People say she wasn't tested because she was so much better than her opposition but I also think part of it was that her opposition was inferior. If you gave Australian middle distance racing an overall rating between 1965 and 2005 a of 90/100 I'd say Winx was racing against 75-80 out 100 level horses. If you said Winx was a 95 and Sunline was a 93 the difference to me was that Sunline raced against 85-90 out of 100 horses. Winx raced against 75-80 out of 100 horses.

Her record is amazing, but she needed much harder testing to be the best.
People say she wasn't tested because she was so much better than her opposition but I also think part of it was that her opposition was inferior.
If you gave Australian middle distance racing an overall rating between 1965 and 2005 a of 90/100 I'd say Winx was racing against 75-80 out 100 level horses.
If you said Winx was a 95 and Sunline was a 93 the difference to me was that Sunline raced against 85-90 out of 100 horses. Winx raced against 75-80 out of 100 horses.
