There's three different calculations we need to make, in order to get a good approximation of the total probability of such an event accuring, these are: 1.) The probability of a dungeon and a mineshaft chest spawning in the same chunk 2.) The probability of a dungeon containing a double chest 3.) The probability of the mineshaft chest to be right next to the dungeon double chest (y-Level needs to match as well) Some of these are practically impossible to calculate, since Minecraft generates dungeons/mineshafts, as well as chests within dungeons in a very unpredictable way. That's why I had to do some sampling on chunkbase to obtain some good estimations. After doing sampling of around 14'592 chunks, I counted 234 dungeons, as well as 108 mineshaft chests. This means that dungeons have a 1.6% chance of generating in each chunk and mineshaft chests have a probability of around 0.74% of doing so. Combining these, we get the probability of around 0.012% (or 1 in 8425) of a dungeon and a mineshaft chest spawning in the same chunk. Dungeons spawn in different sizes with different amount of chests inside them (0-2). All dungeon sizes (5x5, 5x7, 7x7) are equally likely, but the average amount of chests within a dungeon can't be calculated that easily. After manually checking around 50 dungeons myself, I concluded that about half of all dungeons contain two chests within them. Note that for a chest to generate within a dungeon, it needs to be placed next to exactly one solid block (disregarding the mob spawner). This means that double chests can only spawn vertically to the wall, or along the wall if there is an opening right where the chest is. There are around 2*((n-2)+(m-2))-1 ways for a double chest to be generated vertical to the wall, for every nxm sized dungeon. Considering a dungeon has 2 openings on average, this gives around 3 more possible arrangements for double chests to spawn. (Normally you get more openings the bigger the room is). For each nxm sized dungeon, there exist around 2*((n-2)+(m-2))-1 ways for the first chest to be placed. The amount of different possibilities for the second to be placed is highly dependent on the placement of the first chest and the openings, so we can only make assumptions, that there is about 10 ways for 5x5, 13 for 5x7 and 16 for 7x7. (You can draw the possible placements on paper regarding different opening positions and this is the approximation i came up with.) Using these numbers we get the following probabilities of a double chest generating: - 5x5: (2*(3+3)-1+3)/((2*(3+3)-1)*10) = 14/110 = 0.127 = around 1 in 8. - 5x7: (2*(3+5)-1+3)/((2*(3+5)-1)*13)= 18/195 = 0.092 = around 1 in 11. - 7x7: (2*(5+5)-1+3)/(2*(5+5)-1)*16) = 22/304 = 0.076 = around 1 in 14. Since all of these dungeon sizes are equally likely, we get a total probability of 0.097 for double chest accuring in a double chest room or a probability of 0.047 (about 1 in 21) of a double chest accuring in any dungeon. We now already have all calculations needed to calculate the probability of a dungeon double chest and a mineshaft chest being in the same chunk. Now we just need to account for the placement of these chests with respect to each other. For this I assumed that dungeons/mineshafts would generate around Y=10-60, therefore there are exactly 50*16^2 = 12'800 possible blocks where the chests could spawn at. The dungeon chest has exactly 6 adjacent blocks, so the probability of the mineshaft chest being one of those 6 is about 6/12'800, or 1 in 2133. Combining all the different probabilities we calculated, we obtain a pretty good estimate of around 1/8425 * 1/21 * 1/2133 = 1/369'396'908 for a natural triple chest accuring in every chunk. This means that there is approximatly one triple chest in every 300'000x300'000 block area, or about 40'000 naturally generated triple chests in each minecraft world. (Note that I used rounded fractions so it would be easier to read) EDIT: At first this seemed much too common to be true, since 40'000 such triple chests within every minecraft world seems like a lot to barely happen. But this might not seem that weird considering that you'll need to check 5-6 million dungeons on average, before finding one with a triple chest. It's not actually that surprising that there has only been one natural triple chest found on 2b2t so far.

I remember seeing a triple chest for the first time on some hey0mod Towny server around the Beta days, some guys used the chest block as their land claim border and it was basically a whole line of them. Thanks for the nostalgia trip, Sal.
Back when I used to play 4b4t, we figured out that during heavy lag, you could make invisible chests that even chest esp couldn't pick up, but if you knew where to click, you could open the chest. I still have a few on that server somewhere
The change in how Chests were rendered actually provided an interesting application to lining up invalid chests, as with the proper placement only the first two blocks would be rendered, allowing you to create entire walls of invisible, tangible blocks. Before Barriers, this was one way of preventing players from going places they weren't meant to in custom maps.
The chance of a dungeon spawning with a double chest is 0.2% on its own. Adding the probability of a minechaft of spawning in it and the chest in the exact place for a triple chest to spawn, its about 0.00007% chance of a dungeon spawning with a doublechest

Can't believe I didn't see this! Thank you so much for using one of my songs! I've been watching you here and there for a little bit, so this was quite unexpected. Best of luck to ya!
This phenomenon was always in the back of my mind throughout my years playing minecraft but I've never ever seen it covered with such nuance and precision.
Sal, great video again. I know this is kinda generic but your videos are always super interesting and I really appreciate the lengths you go to get and organize all the information and technical details. You’re a beauty.
I remember using world edit back in the day to make invisible blocks for custom maps or plot servers before barrier blocks were a thing, cool history behind the vanilla side of things though!
I remember seeing a tutorial on how to create a triple chest with commands, it was really cool to mess around with. I hope Mojang adds a storage unit with more slots like that
i remember many years ago i came across ~2 dungeons that had spawned on top of one another, the chests of which had somehow glitched together to form a triple chest; its gui was like that of a normal double chest, but the actual slots were larger in number and were disjointed from the slots in the graphic. it was ages ago, probably around 1.4-7, and i never got the seed, which sucks.
Yesterday I was playing older versions with my friends, I totally got confused when I tried to place double chests next to each other and nothing happened
This reminds me of something I read about with pocket edition apparently in super early versions (before iOS or common android versions were released) you couldn’t create double chests like normal, however you could create VERTICAL double chests, which was super weird and caused a lot of glitches with the graphics. It was a bug, and was fixed after a few versions.
i once came upon a double dungeon with a triple chest, and my was the GUI messed up for it, and this was back in update 1.8-1.10, i have to say. It's cool what world generation can do, even with dungeons. I once used the world customization settings to create a world loaded with dungeons, where there were dungeon complexes, and there were a few triple chests to go along with them.
5:43 you say this, but they patched item shadowing (a very, very awesome and super useful update suppression trick) in the snapshot immediately following its public reveal. Mojang left triple chests because it couldn't be abused, not because they have better things to do.
In the actual code, whenever you open a chest it checks all four positions surrounding the block you clicked on for chests and adds them all to the gui, so you'd only get the side chest + the middle chest, unless the side chest had *another* chest next to it.
Had a lot of fun making these with WorldEdit back in the beta days, though I do remember some combinations were broken, which was unfortunate. Also I though I recognized that Radiarc track when it played...because reasons...
I remember hearing about this when I was like 10 and trying to replicate it. Obviously without the glitch it didn't work but I'd love to see a mod that adds in infinite chest sizes!
This reminds me, I should really get going on that "Every Minecraft Version Technical Wiki". Imagine what crazy things have been lurking in old versions without anyone knowing!

Hey sal, years ago probably around 2010-2011, I once saw a floor on a smp seever that was made of entirely single chests, I could never figure out how this was done. Was this some sort of glitch or was it a server admin having fun?
it can't be trapped and normal chests, since i'm 100% sure trapped chests didn't come until 1.5, which was a long way from 2010-2011 i think the texture of the chests was tripping you up and it was actually a floor mostly of quintuple chests. it would be easy to just //wand the floor as an admin...
Man, nether reactors feel like a fever dream when I think back to that time. I was so confused at that time when the portal didn't work. I kinda wanna know how nether reactors came to be.
@@ashtonhoward5582 they came to be due to memory limitations on older phones. It would be too stressful for phones of the time to generate a nether. Thats also why worlds were super small with edges.
Dungeons are actually a very common structure in alpha and beta versions of minecraft, if you you use a xray in alpha 1.7.3 you will find dungeons every 20 blocks to 80 blocks from each other, i only found a glitched double chest in a spawner 1 time before.
I remember in a technic Modpack my friends made, we were using the portal gun mod to transport chests, we were just shooting them through the portal and having another guy catch them, and apparently the chests combined in a way that permanently destroyed the server and the world, it was crazy
so, i believe its around a 1 in 600 chance for a dungeon to spawn with a double chest, since both chest have to spawn adjacent to each other, obviously. its not too rare that a dungeon spawns in a mineshaft but for a chest to generate. a mineshaft can generate up to 80 blocks from its centre, but most don't. this means that, on average, there are about 256000 places a chest could spawn. so id calculate that a the chance of a triple chest spawning would be around 1 in 153600000. im not a professional but i think ive done my math at least somewhat correctly.
5:33 Well, that explains why my 8 year old bedrock world's double chests somehow became single chests when I updated it a few days ago. I was rather flummoxed.
Back when I used to run several servers (1.0 to ~1.5), dicking around I discovered using WorldEdit and setting large areas to chests would break the game and be completely invisible. I used this for some cool builds and neat stuff at my spawn, like floating water/lava statues, long before barriers existed.
I remember I was messing around with structure blocks in bedrock 1.14.~ and accidentally created a triple chest (in a line) when trying to move something. I broke it without thinking, without even trying to open the middle. I no longer have access to minecraft on any device, but someone needs to check this out. There were a bunch of double chests on a storage thing on an automatic farm for a skyblock map I was planning to make... I always use structure blocks to move, copy+paste, delete large areas (since there is a block limit on how bug of an area can be set to air, but a structure block area can be worldheight x 64 x 64. What I usually do is grab a 64x64x~100 block section from above land generation, then paste over the land, the copy that entire worldheight x 64 x 64 section. Also because structure blocks give a preview, where command blocks do not), etc. Anyway I was moving one of them and rotating 180, but I didn't delete the one that was there because I already had the window open and everything, and I could just break the other blocks, or position an air16 structure I had saved. I pasted it and broke the structure block, but when I looked up, there was TWO DOUBLE CHESTS, WITH THE ENDS OF TWO CHESTS IN ONE BLOCK, WITH THE 3D MODELS Z FIGHTING. A triple chest. I wasn't able to recreate it, though I'm not sure I completely understood what I did until like a few days later. I had pasted a double chest overlapping one side of another double chest. It was also on a tablet, so maybe low processing power had something to do with it? I wish I had Minecraft now so I could try to do it again, but I do not have a mobile device, and the internet is slow and hard to download the 400+ MB of Minecraft Java. Someone try this? Idk. Email flemkr19@gmail.com
I swear I've seen someone actually make a triple chest in the same way as the dungeon/mineshaft thing without finding one naturally generating. Some old video on YT.
Yeah my memory is really faded but like 8 years ago I think there was some bug where if you placed two single chests with an empty space between you could place a chest in the middle and force a triple chest
@@TheZebinator I remember the video also taking place in like a storage room, with other chests, and the room had an overall orangish feel. I also want to say it was multiplayer but I'm really not sure.

This channel is pure nostalgia lol, but with extra sprinkles on top! You didn't mention at the start that chests used to not be able to be placed next to each other if they were already 2 long, that seems pretty important and something newer players might not know. You do mention it later, but i wonder if that might be confusing for someone who doesnt know Pretty sure here were other ways, I dont remember them, but I've definitely created many triple chests and I didn't know about the water bug, nor did i know you could keep going. I think there was a way to just break them in a certain order and keep placing them, but it only worked in a line not in a cluster like the quintuple chest. Or maybe I'm just remembering using worldedit, but I dont think so I just found a double dungeon a few days ago in 1.19 where the spawners were on the exact same layer and about 5 blocks away from each other where the chests actually connected in the center, presumably one from one spawner and the other from the other Aww im sad its gone. I guess it would be pretty hard to leave in with the way chests work now
To answer the question briefly: A surprisingly large number of worlds have naturally generating triple chests if you search the whole world, but they are still very rare. Therefore, it is not necessarily surprising that the 2b2t seed has one. Both mineshafts and dungeons can spawn at almost any Y level underground. The average mineshaft contains 5.5 chests, and one spawns on average every 250 chunks. This therefore means that, assuming that underground structures can spawn anywhere between Y=64 and Y=4 (Y=64 is around the average terrain height and Y=4 is close to bedrock level), the chance for a specific block to be a mineshaft chest is 1/(250x16x16x60/5.5)=1/698,181.818181... If a double chest spawns in a dungeon (which is simply a 1/25 chance for a 5x5 dungeon), there are either 5 or 6 places a chest could spawn to make it a triple chest, depending on the placement. If the double chest is touching the spawner, there are 5 places a chest could spawn. If the chest is not touching the spawner, there are 6 places a chest could spawn. Since there are 12 possible double chest positions that are touching the spawner and 24 that are not, the average number of possible blocks for a mineshaft chest to spawn on to create a triple chest is 5.333333. This therefore means that the chance for a mineshaft chest to spawn next to a dungeon double chest, in any given dungeon, is 5.333333/698,181.818181..., or 1/130,909.090909... Unfortunately, the exact spawn rate of dungeons is not known, as they have complicated spawning conditions, but this reddit thread gives a good estimate. www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/2mjtbb/minecraft_18_block_statistics/ There are 116706 mossy cobblestone blocks for every 3.6 billion stone blocks, plus 165 million other underground blocks. Since each block in a dungeon has a 75% chance to be mossy cobblestone and there are 218 blocks making up the outside of a dungeon, there are on average 154.5 mossy cobblestone blocks per dungeon. This means there are around 755.37864 dungeons per 3.765 billion underground blocks (15,360 of which make up the average underground area of a chunk), there are around 755.37864 dungeons per 245,117.1875 chunks, or 1 dungeon per 324.49578862860088286319560214199 chunks. The chance for a chunk to contain a dungeon is therefore 0.308170409306772908366533864542%, and the chance for a dungeon to have a triple chest is 1/130,909.090909, so the chance for any chunk to contain a triple chest is 0.0000023540795155394833830190361064883%. There are 1,875,000 chunks in a world. Therefore, the chance for a triple chest to generate in a 30,000,000 by 30,000,000 world is 4.413899090625%. Around 1 in 22.6 worlds have triple chests, but you'd have to explore the entire world. UPDATE: Because I somehow forgot to multiply both the length *and* width of a chunk by 1,875,000 to get the world's size, it turns out there should actually be something over 8,000 triple chests per world. Since this is obviously false, I'm going to assume that mossy cobblestone chunks in taiga biomes make up half of all mossy cobblestone (I have no data support this yet - I will update this with the correct value once I have checked biome distribution) and that failsafes exist to stop dungeons and mineshafts from generating over each other. This makes sense, as most structures have generation checks, so I'm going to assume (again, I will update this with the correct data when I find it) that a mineshaft is on average 100x100 blocks and chests can only overwrite part of a dungeon when on the outer 5 blocks, as if the mineshaft were any longer it would go all the way through the dungeon and probably trigger some sort of failsafe. This failsafe also likely means that mineshafts and dungeons are unlikely to spawn close to each other in the first place, but I'll leave that for now. If a chest can only overwrite a dungeon on the outer 5 blocks of a 100x100 mineshaft, and a mineshaft is around twice as densely packed in the middle 80 as in the outer edges, there are only around 1900 blocks a chest can generate on in a mineshaft out of the effectively 16400 available. This makes the chance for a mineshaft chest to generate in a stronghold around 10x lower, bringing the total estimated number of triple chests to "only" 800, or 400 if half of all mossy cobblestone is from taiga biomes. I'm not sure what exactly is inflating the value so much.
Taiga biomes may have slightly increased the calculated chance due to the mossy cobblestone patches that can spawn, but it was the closest available estimate since spawners are in no way unique to dungeons.
Update to the ending segment of this, since I forgot to include both length and width of a minecraft world: There are 3,515,625,000,000 chunks in a world. Therefore, the chance for a triple chest to generate in a 30,000,000 by 30,000,000 world is... 8,276,060.794875%. There are around 8276 triple chests per world according to spawning mechanics. Even if you'd have to explore the entire world to find all of those, that's still clearly far too many. My guess is that there are failsafes to stop dungeons and mineshafts from colliding, among other things, and therefore triple chests can only occur when something goes wrong. If that is the case, it is effectively impossible to calculate the actual probability of a triple chest spawning.
My only guesses as to what could have caused the wildly off estimate are failsafes to stop dungeons and mineshafts from spawning inside each other and mossy cobblestone chunks in taiga biomes being far more common than I first realised.
I don' think your estimate of 8'000 triple chests is that wrong. I did some sampling with dungeon/mineshaft spawn rates on chunkbase and got an estimate of around 3'000 triple chests per world as well. I think it's just pretty hard to grasp to sheer size of a minecraft world and I doubt >1% of 2b2ts total mineshafts have been explored.

What happens if you open the side chests after storing something in the center chest? Are only some of the items stored inside the connected chest? Does it automatically delete the extra items? Or does the connecting chest act as a completely separate UI that you can store an entire double chest worth of items in a single chest separate from the other chests?
Oh I remember this glitch, it was a weird glitch but neat. Edit: I played a modded server (in 1.12.0) and apparently there were triple chests so I don’t know if it was a mod or a glitch I seen them in.
you could also make triple chest with chunk dupe i tried it on a 2b2t alternative 0b0t which has a modded version of chunk dupe so i tried using chunk dupe to make triple chest and it was possible, because of one thing 1. chunk dupe restore everything back when the chunk file size is overloaded 2. you place 2 chest at the chunk border 1 chest on chunk dupe side one more on outside 3. then you chunk dupe it then when you are about to make the triple chest you will have to break the chest inside the chunk dupe chunk and add a chest on the outside border of the chunks of the duping area then unload the chunk and it will create a triple chest all in survival also it worked with other items it can be used to make a half portal that can explain how triple chest and cursed portal be form in some places on 2b2t
Actually with mods that allow you to pick up and place tile entities I once made 5er chest. It was weird the inventory was 5 times the size (if you clicked on the chest in the middle) and the block texture dissappeared for all but 1 chest (collision remained tough). (It was after they added the chest open animation)
Once on legacy console, you could make one by leaving and rejoining a world with a bonus chest enabled after destroying the bonus chest, as the bonus chest would respawn every time you did it, so you just reload the world until it spawned the bonus chest between 2 other chests
2:51 you don't necessarily need external programs, I remember having fun with this just with a good old /setblock command (I don't remember the version but it was later than 1.8)
I remember back in 1.12, though I havem't tested it recently, you could easily get a triple chest by simply using /setblock. My younger self thought that was amazing, especially since the GUI glitched out.
This is a kind of long requested feature that accidentally patched a years long bug. Remember, they added this feature to make the chests more usable and to eliminate the need to alternate normal chests and trapped chests in order to create a compact storage system. Before 1.13, players who wanted to make a compact storage system, were frustrated that they had to craft trapped chests just to be able to place them next to each other (if they wanted to automate them, it caused some issues with hoppers as trapped chests output a redstone signal when opened). So Mojang solved this issue by allowing double chests to be placed right next to each other in 1.13, finally making a long requested change, while accidentally fixing a long present bug that some players happily exploited. They didn't fix it intentionally, but happened to be a great coincidence.
Seeing this now, it would be interesting to have a storage block, like chests and barrels, where having more than two put together is intentional in any directly connected form, even if it doesn't have a UI to show its contents. As an example, having a line of them connected together with items collected and put inside by hoppers from the side and they're immediately sorted from below it as soon as they enter, similar to how chest boats can be used to sort multiple items in parallel with their larger hitbox when placed in a minecart.
For Random Placement of chest's,Block count of the dungeon and Mine shaft, chest probable placement count and seed number The first guy is right it's 0.2%(For Double chests) but it gets lower as that the more probabilities it keeps adding it high's up but thats gonna need a month of calculating by hand and memory idk how bots or automatic solving works but for probabilities that governs a chance in Minecraft it's like finding a different kind of water in a water filled plannet
I remember a bug in a version circa 1.7 or 1.8 that allowed you to make triple chests. Turns out you could make them infinitely long with each portion displaying three chests of space. Apart from the two on the end, every chest block was invisible.
so the math is: chance of a double chest spawning is somewhere between 1/25 and 1/49 (depending on the size of the dungoeon) thats easy but here comes the fishy part: there is no guarantee that a chest can even generate in a Mineshaft but on average there are about 4-5 chests per mineshaft for an average size lets say mineshaft complex have on average 5 wings with each having 270blocks of space, since chest spawn on either side we need to cut out the middle row so 270 - 270/3 equals 180 the chance of a chest spawning in particular block is 1/180 chance of mineshaft spawning in a particular chunk is 1/250 and dungeon is 1/1024 thus the chance of spawning mineshaft inside the same chunk as dungeon is about 0,0004% (lets not calculate the chance of spawning inside the chunk but not going through it) with adding all up the chance of it happening are above 1 in 1 152 000 000 to 1 in 22 579 200 000 or 0,000000086 % to 0,000000044 % (since there is no way im calculating or counting how likely are mineshafts to go through the right spot) that explains why it only happened once, not counting two dungeons next to each with a triple chest because they are more common and chest has way less blocks to spawn on as seen on th-cam.com/video/1Qs-ISqkPME/w-d-xo.html dont know how @Riddle got 0.00007 % but hes wrong btw probability of winning a jackpot lottery is (49!/(49-6)!)which is “only” 1 in 13 983 816 or 0.0000000715 %
I think i havent done The full math because a chance of actually finding it is so low and the mineshaft position relative to the dungeon will drastically lower the chance and also i didnt even count that The mineshaft and dungeon need to be in The exact Y level , will continue tomorrow but i might be wrong tho
This glitch would have been useful back when you were unable to place chests directly next to each other because it saves on space needed for chest storage, but at some point trapped chests became a thing, which COULD be placed next to normal chests, and essentially eliminated that issue. But now since 1.13, you don't even need to do that anymore.
I remember playing On my old server with a Lucky Block plugin and one of the Lucky blocks had a chance to spawn like 100 chest in one place. It was weird for me that the chest actually worked. I was also suprised that some chest are invisible and this video explained it to me cuz we were playing On 1.12. So not a new glitch for me but it is nice knowing that they can spawn normally and that they could be created on a really old version of the game.
There's three different calculations we need to make, in order to get a good approximation of the total probability of such an event accuring, these are:
1.) The probability of a dungeon and a mineshaft chest spawning in the same chunk
2.) The probability of a dungeon containing a double chest
3.) The probability of the mineshaft chest to be right next to the dungeon double chest (y-Level needs to match as well)
Some of these are practically impossible to calculate, since Minecraft generates dungeons/mineshafts, as well as chests within dungeons in a very unpredictable way.
(You can draw the possible placements on paper regarding different opening positions and this is the approximation i came up with.) Using these numbers we get the following probabilities of a double chest generating:
- 5x5: (2*(3+3)-1+3)/((2*(3+3)-1)*10) = 14/110 = 0.127 = around 1 in 8.
(Note that I used rounded fractions so it would be easier to read)
EDIT: At first this seemed much too common to be true, since 40'000 such triple chests within every minecraft world seems like a lot to barely happen. But this might not seem that weird considering that you'll need to check 5-6 million dungeons on average, before finding one with a triple chest. It's not actually that surprising that there has only been one natural triple chest found on 2b2t so far.
can you do my math homework tho

I remember seeing a tutorial on how to create a triple chest with commands, it was really cool to mess around with. I hope Mojang adds a storage unit with more slots like that
With the shulkers existing I don't think they'll ever make bigger chests than double chests :{
i remember many years ago i came across ~2 dungeons that had spawned on top of one another, the chests of which had somehow glitched together to form a triple chest; its gui was like that of a normal double chest, but the actual slots were larger in number and were disjointed from the slots in the graphic. it was ages ago, probably around 1.4-7, and i never got the seed, which sucks.

You were playing a version before 17w47a.
What version was that?
i once came upon a double dungeon with a triple chest, and my was the GUI messed up for it, and this was back in update 1.8-1.10, i have to say. It's cool what world generation can do, even with dungeons. I once used the world customization settings to create a world loaded with dungeons, where there were dungeon complexes, and there were a few triple chests to go along with them.
I remember actually doing this in my base like a billion years ago. Memories
I have never heard someone say “chest” so many times and it actually makes sense
5:43 you say this, but they patched item shadowing (a very, very awesome and super useful update suppression trick) in the snapshot immediately following its public reveal. Mojang left triple chests because it couldn't be abused, not because they have better things to do.
Mojang patch countless thing that couldn't be abuse. So ur point arent that correct
Well, item shadowing also allowed for item duping so it's sorta understandable why it was patched
All i could think about during the whole video...
What would happen if you were to open one of the side chests if the middle chest had items in it
In the actual code, whenever you open a chest it checks all four positions surrounding the block you clicked on for chests and adds them all to the gui, so you'd only get the side chest + the middle chest, unless the side chest had *another* chest next to it.

my friend crashed my server by spawning in like 12 quadrillion chests
so, i believe its around a 1 in 600 chance for a dungeon to spawn with a double chest, since both chest have to spawn adjacent to each other, obviously. its not too rare that a dungeon spawns in a mineshaft but for a chest to generate. a mineshaft can generate up to 80 blocks from its centre, but most don't. this means that, on average, there are about 256000 places a chest could spawn. so id calculate that a the chance of a triple chest spawning would be around 1 in 153600000. im not a professional but i think ive done my math at least somewhat correctly.

*Drink everytime hes says "Chest"*

According to my math, the odds of the triple chest spawning naturally is one in a fucking lot

Pretty sure here were other ways, I dont remember them, but I've definitely created many triple chests and I didn't know about the water bug, nor did i know you could keep going. I think there was a way to just break them in a certain order and keep placing them, but it only worked in a line not in a cluster like the quintuple chest. Or maybe I'm just remembering using worldedit, but I dont think so
I just found a double dungeon a few days ago in 1.19 where the spawners were on the exact same layer and about 5 blocks away from each other where the chests actually connected in the center, presumably one from one spawner and the other from the other
Aww im sad its gone.
Unfortunately, the exact spawn rate of dungeons is not known, as they have complicated spawning conditions, but this reddit thread gives a good estimate. www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/2mjtbb/minecraft_18_block_statistics/
There are 116706 mossy cobblestone blocks for every 3.6 billion stone blocks, plus 165 million other underground blocks.
UPDATE:
Because I somehow forgot to multiply both the length *and* width of a chunk by 1,875,000 to get the world's size, it turns out there should actually be something over 8,000 triple chests per world.
Update to the ending segment of this, since I forgot to include both length and width of a minecraft world:
There are 3,515,625,000,000 chunks in a world.

The side chests only show and allow access to a double chest worth without affecting any other items.
I was going crazy when he never showed the other side of the chest. I'm curious how the items arrange in the normal UI in comparison to the middle
Oh I remember this glitch, it was a weird glitch but neat.
Edit: I played a modded server (in 1.12.0) and apparently there were triple chests so I don’t know if it was a mod or a glitch I seen them in.
Nice vid dude, this is my first video I saw from you and I had to subscribe
Joined Minecraft in 2011 yet never heard of triple chests, funny enough. Not sure why? Maybe the rarity is part of it.
0:29 *LOOKS MORE OF A QUAD CHEST THAN A TRIPLE CHEST*
6:04 how is this NOT useful? You can literally get triple the storage. If that isn’t useful then I don’t know what is
you could also make triple chest with chunk dupe i tried it on a 2b2t alternative 0b0t which has a modded version of chunk dupe so i tried using chunk dupe to make triple chest and it was possible, because of one thing
1. chunk dupe restore everything back when the chunk file size is overloaded
2. you place 2 chest at the chunk border 1 chest on chunk dupe side one more on outside
3. then you chunk dupe it then when you are about to make the triple chest you will have to break the chest inside the chunk dupe chunk and add a chest on the outside border of the chunks of the duping area then unload the chunk and it will create a triple chest all in survival also it worked with other items it can be used to make a half portal that can explain how triple chest and cursed portal be form in some places on 2b2t
Actually with mods that allow you to pick up and place tile entities I once made 5er chest. It was weird the inventory was 5 times the size (if you clicked on the chest in the middle) and the block texture dissappeared for all but 1 chest (collision remained tough). (It was after they added the chest open animation)
now we need to see how much stuff can fit in a tile, without entities
Bro I remember tryna do shiz like this back in the day! Totally forgot about this and now I got so many memories coming back!!!
Nostalgia!

Your videos always makes our day better! 💗
This entire video I wanted to see what the items would look like if you opened the 'double' chest on either side
great video! I love forgetting stuff like this and re-learning about it
it'd be really cool if there was a mod that could emulate these kinda quicks of old mc in the newer version
Thanks for the history!
I love this type of content!
Once on legacy console, you could make one by leaving and rejoining a world with a bonus chest enabled after destroying the bonus chest, as the bonus chest would respawn every time you did it, so you just reload the world until it spawned the bonus chest between 2 other chests
I actually found one naturaly spawned in a dungeon back in 2015. Thank you, now, after all these years I can feel special for a moment
2:51 you don't necessarily need external programs, I remember having fun with this just with a good old /setblock command (I don't remember the version but it was later than 1.8)
5:11 I completely forgot we couldn’t place chests next to one another 😵💫
I remember back in 1.12, though I havem't tested it recently, you could easily get a triple chest by simply using /setblock.
Great video! Question: does the C1 in SalC1 mean anything?
you can ask on his discord server: discord.gg/SZZ7Z9Sw
For Random Placement of chest's,Block count of the dungeon and Mine shaft, chest probable placement count and seed number
The first guy is right it's 0.2%(For Double chests) but it gets lower as that the more probabilities it keeps adding it high's up but thats gonna need a month of calculating by hand and memory idk how bots or automatic solving works but for probabilities that governs a chance in Minecraft it's like finding a different kind of water in a water filled plannet
If my math is correct, the possibility of a triple chest spawning right underneath spawn is about 420 Dreams.
R.I.P Triple Chests...
I remember a bug in a version circa 1.7 or 1.8 that allowed you to make triple chests. Turns out you could make them infinitely long with each portion displaying three chests of space. Apart from the two on the end, every chest block was invisible.
the exact probability of 4:10 is 1 in 7.5 trillion thank me later
math:
((1*7.5 trillion) * 0) + 7.5 trillion = 1/7.5 trillion ratio B)
Nope
when commands were added you could make triple chests with /setblock, I remember placing them all over my creative worlds
so the math is:
chance of a double chest spawning is somewhere between 1/25 and 1/49 (depending on the size of the dungoeon)
thats easy but here comes the fishy part:
there is no guarantee that a chest can even generate in a Mineshaft but on average there are about 4-5 chests per mineshaft for an average size
lets say mineshaft complex have on average 5 wings with each having 270blocks of space, since chest spawn on either side we need to cut out the middle row so 270 - 270/3 equals 180
the chance of a chest spawning in particular block is 1/180
chance of mineshaft spawning in a particular chunk is 1/250 and dungeon is 1/1024
thus the chance of spawning mineshaft inside the same chunk as dungeon is about 0,0004% (lets not calculate the chance of spawning inside the chunk but not going through it)
with adding all up
the chance of it happening are above 1 in 1 152 000 000 to 1 in 22 579 200 000 or 0,000000086 % to 0,000000044 % (since there is no way im calculating or counting how likely are mineshafts to go through the right spot)
that explains why it only happened once, not counting two dungeons next to each with a triple chest because they are more common and chest has way less blocks to spawn on as seen on th-cam.com/video/1Qs-ISqkPME/w-d-xo.html
dont know how @Riddle got 0.00007 % but hes wrong
btw probability of winning a jackpot lottery is (49!/(49-6)!)which is “only” 1 in 13 983 816 or 0.0000000715 %
damn i wish i hadnt spent a 50 minutes on this
I think i havent done The full math because a chance of actually finding it is so low and the mineshaft position relative to the dungeon will drastically lower the chance and also i didnt even count that The mineshaft and dungeon need to be in The exact Y level , will continue tomorrow but i might be wrong tho
@@patrik-w2d cool
This glitch would have been useful back when you were unable to place chests directly next to each other because it saves on space needed for chest storage, but at some point trapped chests became a thing, which COULD be placed next to normal chests, and essentially eliminated that issue. But now since 1.13, you don't even need to do that anymore.
Very interesting video and well explained!
It doesn’t function, but you can visually make a triple chest in modern versions of Minecraft with the debug stick.
true, also you can make an invisible chest
@@vistaman1 budget barrier
I remember playing On my old server with a Lucky Block plugin and one of the Lucky blocks had a chance to spawn like 100 chest in one place. It was weird for me that the chest actually worked. I was also suprised that some chest are invisible and this video explained it to me cuz we were playing On 1.12. So not a new glitch for me but it is nice knowing that they can spawn normally and that they could be created on a really old version of the game.

I used to love making triple, quad, etc chests in mcedit back in the day. Wacky how the extra spaces was handled.
Therapist: the minecraft triple chest doesn't exist, it cant hurt you. minecraft triple chest:
0:07 yes i have, with commands.

Have a nice day 👍 (if you see this comment)
You can’t tell me what to do!
And if i dont?
Thank you
What happens to the people who don’t see this comment do they have to have a bad or mediocre day?
Nah, ima do my one thing
4:08 I think (Im not a math expert) that the probablity of that happening is like you just won the lottery 50 times in a row, unless its set seed
How to build a triple chest (2b2t):
1. Find map art resetter coordinates
2. Travel to the coordinates (using boat)
3. Troll it up
