I just got a little Spyderco Dragonfly in k390 just to try out the steel and i gotta say i frickin dig it! Gonna get myself either a Endella or a Endura in k390 i like it so much! Great vid bro, keep em coming
I love the way my TRM Atom goes through cardboard, it's such a joy to slice with it. While I usually reach for a 3.5" blade when I have a bunch of cardboards boxes to break down, I've really been enjoying my k390 wharncliffe Delica. That thing goes through cardboard like a hot knife through butter. I love the feeling of how easily it glides through
Spyderco for the win! I used my Delica heavily for the same task over the weekend and it still slices through paper as if it were recently sharpened 😂😂👍🏼👍🏼
I don't think there is an opinion in the knife community that I trust more than yours. Keep up the good work! I really love these performance based reviews. Thank you for putting in the work to actually use your blades and consider ergos, geometry and design.
Well lookie lookie.. I just picked up that birdseye Chaparral and it was delivered today, my 4th chappy. Beautiful blade for any kind of DTD stuff. People, please use a utility knife to cut cardboard.
@@Stassa23 Yeah I hear you, I'm looking for any reason to use my knife too. Years of breaking down wine/beer cases in liquor stores has me jaded, there's just nothing like one of those free safety razor box cutter things to rip through a mountain of cardboard LOL
Great looking blades overall and no doubt geometry cuts, but for me the handle is just as important and I like knives that are generally around the 3.5" size and bigger. The civivi Riffle, the Kubey KU322, the large CJRB Feldspar are some of my favorites for example in that range. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable
I use the police 4 with just the vg10 blade and it still goes through cardboard like butter. Highly recommend. Now seeing your vid makes me want a k390
Just about all of my Civivi’s are excellent slicers. The three that come to mind are the Sheepdog, Leek and Mini Roach. The Mini Roach is a laser beam albeit the shorter blade. Thanks for the video!
I’ve been using the Spyderco military 2 cru-carta (micarta scales and cru-wear blade). I’m pretty impressed with how great it slices . The knife is like pocket sword though. I love it, but I did order the same knife in the shorter paramilitary 2 version.
Have you ever tested one of those Stanley knifes with disposable blades. How do these compare to a knife with great steel. Can these thin blades be resharpened.
These will hold an edge for a good while longer. The Carbide Lenox blades seem to hold an edge longer than the other razor blades but still not as long as some of the steels in this list. You can sharpen them if they are good ones but they are so cheap most just throw them away and slap in a new one. I use to strop mine to keep the as sharp as possible but realized it was quicker just to put a new one in lol
And I totally agree with you about the police 4 being the God of card board slicing. Will cut test mine once it's on edge 4, I'm on edge 2 now. K390 and 400 grit Poltava metallic bonded cbn stones are a match made in steel and stone heaven.
I’m just on sharpening number two but I have a ton of boxes to break down tonight so I’m sure I’ll be sharpening it again really soon. I’ll be interested to see what you get , I’ll keep an eye on your IG
Definitely. K390 is so good with a 50 to 80 micron finish. Once you get to the 3rd or 4th edge it cuts forever. It's still good with a polished edge but course is the way to go
I had a K390 para 3 and it rolled hard in the first 10’ of cardboard I sharpened it and it rolled again in a small amount of cardboard. I sold it. I usually grab a Maxamet PM2 or s90v Medford for processing a lot of cardboard.
Don't write off k390 just because of your experience with the Golden HT. I had a similar experience with a pm2, but my p4lw is my go to cardboard knife. Cut well over 1k feet last time and stropped back to scrape shaving
Yes, but no one's listening lol. Dedicated knives are generally more comfortable to use compared to the likely cheap and poorly designed (in terms of ergos) utility blade holder that we own though
I recently had occasion to do my own Great Cardboard Cut Down test with lots of old, thick, heavy boxes stored for 20-30 years. Kizer Gemini was a standout. The Deka put the standard Bugout to shame by a factor of 2 or 3 to one. Then there's the Manly Wasp and as much as I hate and despise the company it is THE thinnest behind the edge and with S90v, well, its a laser. Check Supersteel Steve's cut tests on the lowly 12c27 version...then imagine that in S90v.

I don't get it. 3 of the knives on the list you complain about being too short (KUF 3.0, Centauri & Roach) but each of them comes in a larger version. Why not just get the larger version? I've learned the larger knives tend to have better distal taper, terminate to a thinner edge and give you more room (blade) to slice through material. The best cardboard slicers I have ever handled have been my ADV Pitboss 2, Renegade Provisions Gungnir, and Cherburkov Kasataka.
Civivi backlash is still my favorite cardboard knife. Mine is 10 thou behind the edge and the steel is decent for 9cr. Manix in rex45 and chaparral are up there too. I still need to pick up a police in k390
I've carried a chaparral everyday for a long time, outstanding little knife. I have a Ferrum Forge Stinger, luv the knife hate the carbon fiber scales. Do you know of anyone who makes replacement scales for the stinger ???
For folders, the k390 Seki models are all great for cardboard. Stretch 2, probably my favorite or a sebenza. I wish they made an endela or endura in Delica thickness. For fixed blades, True Saber and BRK, especially the DHA and Seax models.
This isn't something you can readily buy anymore, but I find the Spyderco Lil' Nilakka has an excellent grind, & is only about .007" behind the edge (?!). Yeah, it's super short, but It's seldom that I'm going through cardboard that's all that thick.
