    Twenty-five years ago I began planning to attend the Alaska teacher placement fair. My plans were interrupted when I received an offer to travel to Mexico, for free as a translator for a youth group. I never made it to the teacher placement fair, but in August of 1996 I got a call from Ron Gleason, the JDHS principal at the time. A phone interview was conducted with a hiring committee and ten days later I was in a 24 foot U-Haul truck driving to the Bellingham, WA ferry port for the Alaska Marine Highway. I had never been to Juneau nor any farther west than Kansas at that point and it was a gamble. But JDHS is where I stayed for 25 years, and Juneau is where I raised my family. Here is where I am retiring. I have lived in Juneau longer than I have lived anywhere, including growing up in Iowa. I may be a wanderer, but Alaska is where I have made a home.

    This video series has been incredibly helpful! I am so frustrated and disappointed in the "American dream" that most people have. I don't care about money, stuff, status, the State, etc. I feel it in my soul that I just need to leave the lower 48 and just turn my back on this way of life... but it's terrifying!... your video series on Alaska has given me a clear picture of what to expect... if im ever in Seward, I'll say hi 👋 🙂

      @@tahirbayramov8570 the long 22 hour days in summer, and 4 hours of weak (sunset) daylight in winter, Anchorage is the biggest city in the state, it has everything any other normal city has, next normal urban area would be my town of Wasilla/Palmer which is 40 minutes north of Anchorage, Anchorage has a high crime rate in comparison to the rest of the state, no toll roads here, theres no sales tax in Anchorage either, the roads have alot of potholes in some parts because of the winters, potholes are sometimes very deep and something you have to watch for, always watch for moose, they're a huge problem on the interstate, and around the airport in Anchorage, and bring alot of OFF the mosquitoes are huge and rampant in spring/summer.

    Sooo glad you are on my screen this morning .......and to boot , what a good topic for us as we are contemplating our decision to move there....trying to narrow down the specific area. We love the whole place as we visited for three months in 2015 and Rv’ing from the Yukon all the ay south to Homer. We have narrowed down our choices to Homer, Anchor Point, Seward and Kenai. Obviously somewhere on the peninsula as we are looking for the best fishing . Plan to take some time to rewatch some of your videos in preparation .

    We have lived remotely in Willow since 1997. Now with the covid chaos, we are hunkered in Oregon where we have a second home. Where we are is 40 miles from major shopping, just like in Alaska, where we live 38 miles from shopping in Wasilla. Flipping switches and turning faucets has been a reminder of how we have adapted to remote living.....where we live off grid with solar and a genny for power. When we return, it is going to be culture shock all over.
    Thank you for the reminders of why we still call ourselves “Alaskans”. We miss our place on the lake, and look forward to returning after things settle down with this covid thing.

    I have for quite some time wanted to live in Alaska, or at least give it a try. My sister did too, but she never got to live it. She passed away July 18, 2019, of cancer. There was a time say 20 years ago I might have been able to build the cabin by myself! lol Now...not so much 🙄 If I had a big burly partner then yep. off we would go! I am 56 years old and on disability. ~sighs~ So odds are, it will just be a fond dream. 😭 So what I'm hoping to accomplish with in the next year or two, is to buy some land just outside of town where my other sister lives, to be closer to her and her family. Put a cabin there. I want the property to eventually be off grid but one thing at a time lol 💖

      @@thierryfucus8697 No 'state' income taxes (for now, but the legislature continues to try to implement it) - but there are still Federal taxes, sales taxes ranging from a low of 1% to a high of 7%. (The "typical" sales tax rates within Alaska range from 2%-5%). Other types of local taxes are raw fish taxes, hotel/motel "bed" taxes, severance taxes, liquor and tobacco taxes, gaming (pull tabs) taxes and fuel transfer taxes.

    how is the Healthcare? since taxes are low how are the schools or are kids mostly taught at home?

    • @outliersoverland
      @outliersoverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the most part healthcare Anchorage can handle everything, but that can be 800 miles away and require a medical evacuation.
      I don’t know for sure about home schooling, but in the extremely rural areas I’m sure it’s more popular. Other than that the towns almost all have schools.

    What are the cost of the utilities in Alaska?

    • @outliersoverland
      @outliersoverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really location dependent, but overall it’s more expensive.

    • @michealdraconis6179
      @michealdraconis6179 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since the cost of fuel is high in Alaska and they burn coal or oil to produce electricity I would imagine that the utilities are high as well

      Depends on the location whether they’ve ran cable or have cell phone towers, if not you have to go with satellite.

    I have never canned meat why would you just not freeze it

    • @outliersoverland
      @outliersoverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Canned foods are shelf stable and are dry convenient.

    • @michealdraconis6179
      @michealdraconis6179 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      True but you don’t even need a freezer in Alaska just install a stone lined pit in your basement that goes down to permafrost and build an exterior wall to separate it from the main part of the basement and add a walk in cooler door

    • @outliersoverland
      @outliersoverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s not necessarily the case in every part of Alaska and your food will spoil.
