Join me as I check out downtown Nome Alaska. I was there during the annual summer solstice festival and had a great time. I did get run off of the visitor's center property by a very drunk and potty-mouthed Eskimo women. She does cuss in the video, so that 20 second segment may not be suitable for everyone. It was pretty funny though.

Makes me so distraught seeing how badly alcohol has affected the native communities here in Alaska;( I’m native myself and it just breaks my heart, I hope the issue will be resolved in time. Alcohol is poisoning our communities, we never had it historically, so we have no tolerance against it. I just hope it’ll get better.

I developed a fondness for Nome and was saddened by the destruction of family groups by the effects of alcohol. I’ve seen the same effect in other parts of Alaska. There is no such thing as tolerance to alcohol, it destroys people everywhere it is abused. I pray that it gets better. Through faith in Jesus Christ and the grace of God, your people can be delivered!

I lived in Bethel when I was in high school and it was worse there. A lot of people, when they get drunk, regardless of race, will be impossible to deal with when they are drunk. I learned to ignore it. The Eskimo people are awesome , I have relatives who are Eskimo, but they lose control much easier due to the lack of thousands of years of adaptation to alcohol it like some other races have.
They don't have the enzymes to break down the alcohol.
They seem to be unevolved!
I played guitar in a bar band for 10years, I’ve seen my share of drunks (and been one a few times too), not exclusive to Alaska by any means. I learned that too much of anything is bad for ya no matter who you are.
Then you spent enough time there that you should realize that Alaskan natives are more likely to become raging alcoholics by a factor of 10.
It's bad in Alaska for these small communities because most of them are very isolated. There's nothing to do for recreational fun. So many turn to alcohol and drugs which in turns leads to domestic violence and crime. Not to mention Alaska has the highest or very near the top suicide rate per capita. For many years they have led that statistic.
I live in Fairbanks. Its the same here. The issue of drunk natives is not exclusive to Nome. Several die here each year from being drunk and passing out in the parking lot.

I was born and raise in Fairbanks, AK and still live here. I spent the summers of 1968 & 1969 working in Nome. I was 21 and 22 those years. We were building a new Nome-Council Road and a concrete bridge across the Nome River. In 1968 another construction company was digging up the main roads in "downtown" Nome, installing water and sewer lines and replacing the wooden board sidewalks. Lots of gold and money was found in the dirt under those old board sidewalks. The construction company and police had to stop the kids and people from tearing up the board walks because they were creating havoc. I had a lot of fun in Nome and in 1969 I bought a car from a friend for $200.00 and drove it everywhere that the roads would take me on my days off. I don't know if it is still there, but there was a settlement of native people from King Island which was sort of abandoned by the villagers just on the outskirts of Nome along the Nome-Council Road. These people were very good walrus ivory carvers and would bring their carvings into Nome to sell for food and alcohol. Maybe that is what the drunk native woman was referring to when she said "get off my island." The Board of Trade Bar (known as the BOT) was a place where the carvers would sell their works of art. The back bar at the BOT was full of carvings and tourists would often go home with a piece of carved walrus art as I did. I became friends with many of the locals in Nome and I thought for awhile that I would buy a house and live there. I talked myself out of it though with a little help from my parents.
I've lived in Nome my whole life. That black water was just the city moving sand out of the boat port lol
Back in my days as a firefighter we were at a brush fire on the reservation. I saw an old drunk staggering towards me. I'm thinking oh oh. He come up to me and says" I just wanted to thank you and the other warriors for coming out to help us.". It was kind of funny.

Lived in Nome for two years for my 3rd and 4th grade back in 96' and 97' I believe. It was a lot simpler times back then. We were outside every single day finding something to keep ourselves occupied. My aunt whom I lived with was a nurse at the hospital and worked almost everyday very long hours. So I had free reign almost daily. There was really anything to worry about at the time as everyone knew everyone there so most looked out after each other. My aunt knew we kept out of trouble for the most part. Her only rule was we couldn't go to one store which was a bar. I dont remember the name but it was close to the end of Main street on the opposite side of the street that the ocean is on. Same end of the road where the Iditarod ends. There was a couple arcade games in there we'd sneak into there sometimes to play.
Of course we'd sneak into the REC center almost everyday without paying to get in. But the workers for the most part didn't mind as they knew we were just kids and wanted to play some basketball or something inside.
One of my favorite memories was spring time as the ice starts to break up. We'd go ice jumping in the ocean. Kinda play chicken and see who would go the furthest out or jump on the smallest piece of ice.
So many great childhood memories from my time in Nome.

Had a job offer here once. I was a subcontractor. I backed out of the contract when I learned there were some customs about the town I didn’t like. Several decades later, I realized that my decision had been the correct one. I think now it’s ok to visit, but not ok to live there as in permanently. Nice video. Thanks

Unfortunating this is true. A few years back I went to a lake in Minnesota for a fishing trip. The lake was situated on an Indian Reservation. On the first of the month when the government checks come in, the men from the reservation were lined up in front of the liquor store waiting for it to open. The line was at least 100yards long. Really sad.
The line started long ago with the man made reservations....sad

I was born and raised in Nome.A person can go into any town or city and make a negative report of a place. Depends on what your mind concentrated on. Also not being from the place for any length of time can give a lot of first impressions giving false ideals. Single people for most part if they do not have family do not qualify for a lot of help . Most of the natives are very talented artists and carvers and native artwork is the most under valued compared to so many artwork from other countries.Lot of these natives may not even qualify for any government money but make carvings just enough to go on a drunk for a while as a lot of natives are occasional binge drinkers and may stay sober for a long while. Some of course are addicted to it and usually don't live very long. Some of the older natives did work and do have social security benefits and or retirement.Some of the native men are veterans that never had mental help. I am a native and married and have lost the taste for alcohol the last forty some years.I did at one time abuse alcohol after being raped and left for dead on a street in Nome as a young teen.Never saw the person as he came from behind me and lifted me off my feet in a choke hold . I came to laying in an old abandoned car located on Steadman Street between the Old Catholic church and Bronsons house. I do know who the person was but was tall enough to lift my five ft. two inch. body off my feet to choke me. He also had on a ball player letter jacket that high school students use. I went to the Luthern Church and the pastors were not in but the daughter was and I asked to use their bathroom to clean myself up. Went home and took twenty one aspirin and ended up so sick for two days. Never told anyone about the rape. One winter I saw a seven foot man who looked exactly like father time with a sickel , had his arms crossed and heard him say " I am so proud of you, you belong to me. That scared me so much, that winter I prayed in my own home asking God if he was real , I am asking you to help me fix up my messed up life. What peace, joy, and love came into my being as a warm liquid love instantly.I was 26 yr. old . I use to wake up about four in the morning making a glass of slo gin and orange juice and smoke a cigarette or two , and then go back to sleep. That day I had that peace, I never drank again. I did not have to have any counseling or treatment to quit the habit. Whom the Son (Jesus) sets free is free indeed. The native drunk lady may have her story, maybe you reminded her of someone who violated her in some way. Maybe a caucasian man raped her and she now hates looking at men like you as it gives her bad memories.

I always presented to the Spirit that came and helped me back then and throughout the years. " Why have you "living Spirit " come into my home as I was alone with no person present and I never went back into abusing alcohol like so many others have that seemed to experience what I had experienced back in "78"? I recently in 2019 Sept. suffered head trauma from a freak accident in public. Been a slow recovery and still in recovery. Medical bills unpaid due to insurance companies along with medical personal that hold tight to the money they take in.Like a rape victim who have to prove she was raped without her own cause. A freak accident victim have to go through similar scrutiny in the courts to prove medical issues are and have aggravated and contributed to other head trauma to become worse to the point that my life was interrupted for almost four yrs. now. I asked the Spirit of the living God " Why was I the only one hurt in such a freak accident in a crowd of people attending a state fair.?" Going into the fourth year since the accident I ended up attending a large gathering of what is called a friday fling of venders selling good at a railroad depot. As I approached the railroad depot yard with all the vendors with some under a similar tent as the one that flew up in the air with a gust of wind , flipped over and the tight cloth part came down on my right front of my head, knocked me off my feet and landing on cement pavement injuring not only my head, but my right shoulder and right knee and diagnosed with whiplash. For a week after seeing the white tents I had memory of replay of the accident and the many times I put my family through trauma as I was medivaced to ER rooms in a hospital with severe alternating horizontal/vertical nystagmus that made me convulse its vomiting and completely paralyzed with losing any control of muscles to make any movement as I am stabilized at home and then medicated to er only to be released with in a day after being medicated. I fought off to remember due to what I and my family had to suffer since 2019 sept.. After a week of remembering the accident , it set of the remembrance of when I was raped and left for dead ,many years ago in 1960's as a young teen in Nome, Ak. Memory came in bits and pieces throughout the days and gave me much trauma with the memories. Also made my husband and I finally understand an incident on our wedding night. He told me this years later .When we were about to get intimate with both of us with no clothes on, I got up suddenly and ran out of the hotel room we were at on our honeymoon night.WE were never intimate in that way throughout our engagement . I have no memory of that night that happened and did not know for years about it. The spirit healed me about having sex in my marriage only after His love /spirit came to me in 1978. Never drank alcohol or desire it since that day in 1978, Feb.. Then this summer I realized that was the cause of taking alcohol and drinking in order for me to have sex in our marriage. Trauma of rape is very complex. Our mind blocks out trauma to protect us to some degree so we can continue to live life. Now I also understand what veterans go through with PTSD. John 3:16 is so true in my life. For God so loved the world , that He gave His only begottenSon became such a revelation in my live and continue to be. Sorry long story and shortened with a lot left out.

That is sad. Alcoholism is a big problem, not just in Canada or Alaska but the whole world. -From someone who hates alcohol and travels a lot.
Alcoholism is a symptom of a much bigger problem. And this is coming from a Coast Salish scholar.
Alaska has three different alcohol laws known in Alaska as Wet, Dry, & Damp.
Wet means you can buy, drink, and posess alchohol...Nome has bars and liquor stores for example and is considered Wet.
Dry means it is illegal for any alchohol to be in that town or village.
Damp means it is legal to posess alchol...but you can not buy it there...it must be shipped or carried in.

thajman Since i live in the really northern part of Sweden, i can't notice any change (i live in a small village, we're about 50people) so nothing is really happening around the area where i live. But in the larger cities down the south is where all the immigrants stay. Lately i've been reading alot about people getting mugged, raped, shot (More than usual) in alot of the troubled areas. Don't get me wrong, all this happened before all the mass migration but at a much lower scale. So since i don't really live in the south of Sweden i can't really say that much about it.
However i do think that Sweden shouldn't take in as many immigrants as we currently do. Its getting to a point where its just damaging our country.

Its a better experience when you personally know them,my dad lived on the streets when he was my age,he group up to be a great cook and knew half of the people who lived on the streets. Every time we went walking I would always meet someone new

As a kid its awesome, you can go walking,or go to the park with friends. Sometimes we went to the abandoned gold dredges outside of town. If it was really hot we'd go swimming or stay inside at a friend's place. School there sucked😂 of course a lot of kids or teens would say that regardless. There was also boys and girls club and checkpoint,checkpoint was a small little building where we would do bible study,eat dinner,play games and hang out,it was also a little place for the mushers too. There was so much there,its very nostalgic seeing 2017 footage

Locals can be aggressive in Hawaii too. Not necessarily drunks, but they get territorial and seem to have a particular disdain for the military on Oahu. Oh, and that pipe you saw with the black water was most likely a dredge in a canal somewhere pumping to the beach.

Yup, my brother got beat pretty bad while drinking while off duty with his wife. A group of locals didn’t like his military attitude and beat him pretty good, had to have plastic surgery in his face all said and done. He told him when he came home, they hate us there..

I went on google maps and mindlessly looked around the world, homed in on nome and thought it looked interesting from satellite. Hoped on TH-cam typed in Nome Alaska and found this video. Drunk angry Eskimo ahaha
I was in Fairbanks, Alaska for 3 weeks for a military exercise back in the early to mid 2000’s. It was during their worst forest fires in like 50 years. Most of our daily missions were canceled due to low visibility so every day we got to explore. My friends and I would drive about an hour north to a natural hot springs resort just to get above the smoke layer so we could breathe fresh air. Anyway, one day we couldn’t buy alcohol on base for some reason so we stopped at a bar in the middle of nowhere. It was like a scene from a movie. We walked in and all the locals stopped what they were doing and stared us down. Felt like one of those scenes from Dusk to Dawn Beau is always mentioning. Lol

@@aquachigger it was! Even worth the letter we all received from the military afterwards telling us we’d breathed in toxic levels of smoke for 3 weeks. But I agree with you that there is so much to see and do up there. I’d love to visit again someday.

We made it up to Talkeetna and Denali roughly the same time of year (July-ish) and it was nuts how the sun touched the horizon, hung out, and then trekked back up. That and we saw a dozen or so moose in Anchorage, then left the city. Boom. No more moose haha. Theres so much weird stuff up there thats really a privilege to experience!
He’s Dion I grew up in Alaska moved there at the age of two in 1969. My parents were both high school teachers at No One belts high school. I was amazed to see 30 years later and nothing has changed. The board of trade bar is still on front Street I have memories growing up, going down to the AC store the Alaska commercial, one of the only or a few stores in town, and there were several known town drunks that just wondered around constantly. It is a sad truth that’s dead on. I remember as a kid we used to run on those big rocks. It’s called the jetty there on the bearing sea, and you’d always see the same town drunk as name as Charlie. It’s really a sad problem there and people do go missing often and it’s always due to alcohol.

Had a very sweet conversation with the granddaughter of a drunk lady in Kotzebue one time. I was there on business. Beautiful country around Kotzebue, but the village was quite depressing. Worse than Nome by far.

Some tour of Nome, truth be told it didn't seem to amount to much. Never pleasant to deal with drunks no matter the time or place. Glad the women wasn't packing a gun. It doesn't look like a town I would want to visit anytime soon. I am glad you came through the whole Alaska experience unscathed.
Sure its not too great but its not so bad as you expect,if you know them like I do you get to know some nice people,but I mostly say that cuz I grew up around a lot of alcoholics,hell a certain amount of my family are alcoholics
Thank you for your videos. I have thoroughly enjoyed the ones from Alaska. That said...this one is kind of sad...not the least because of the woman who followed you. I only wish there was an easy solution to really help these folks. Alcoholism is a sad fact of life. And it happens everywhere. Unfortunately, in some places more than others. Alaska is a beautiful state. It's heartbreaking to see what alcohol has done. You never shy away from difficult subjects so wasn't surprised when you included this in the video. And it's not just alcohol. It's reported that the most commonly abused substances in Alaska also includes heroin, methamphetamine, prescription drugs, cocaine, and marijuana.
We have to remember that was just a small part of your Alaska adventure. Thanks for the tour and the bad pun re: the birdwatchers flocking! Too much but not unexpected! LOL

If you buy a supply of liquior before the the stores close you can trade it for cool native items on the main drag at night. The Eskimos are pretty nice and harmless.

The pipe spewing the black liquid I'd actually a dredge in the harbor pumping black sand from the harbor out onto the beach.... keeping the harbor deep enough for the freight and oil barges along with cruise ships. If he'd have followed the pipe he'd have seen the dredge. Plus.... that black sand is where there's gold!

I know the lady who was yelling at you. She's nice when she's sober. Everyone makes their own choices in life and some people just can't cope or something awful happens. Or they make shit choices. Alcohol is a really hard thing to fight if you aren't taught how to drink or around it in a bad manner your whole life. I feel bad seeing people I know drunk and stammering and face planting but I can only help so much before it's on whoever won't stop being wasted.

I think it is the same with most reservations. I hunted up in the NW corner of NE. Next to the Pine Ridge Reservation (Oglala Souix) for about 25 years. There border of the ranch was SD and the reservation. Whenever I went into the little town of Whiteclay, it was a roll of the dice if I would get hassled or not. I had a friend that had a parts store there. He got tired of them always yelling across the street, and having just bought a paintball gun, stepped out, and shot one of them between the eyes. The yelling slowed down for awhile.
That black water shooting out of the pipe is the raw sewage from the main street bars. If you set up a Long Tom downstream, I heard that on a good night you can do over 2 ounces!
Ehhh. You can find half dozen drunks like that here on every block in NYC

That’s not totally true. There are drunks in every city, granted, but the amount of drunks chasing you in Nome cannot be compared with to any other part of the USA.
@@alcamerc9970 I used to sail on a coastal freighter in Alaska and I was saddened to see all the chronic drunk Alaskan natives up there. They made up a disproportionate percent of the total population.
You can find them everywhere as it is a disease. They need help, not being made fun of. :-( Until it touches your own life and leaves you with scares, no one will ever ever ever understand. It is everywhere, as is the collateral damage.
