    Great work, Chief!!! Think about building some of these, but with either threaded aluminum, stainless steel, brass, or galvanized steel pipe and stainless steel threaded rod. Also, on the pommel end, I'll attach a eye nut and an extra nut or two to make a super strong and secure attachment point for a lanyard/tether and/or float...

      That sounds awesome. Always encourage folks to find a way to build it better! 😁🤙
      I love looking back at these vids of me building things in my living room of our rental apartment. Humble beginnings.

    Awesome idea! I just made two today. I sprayed foam inside and sprayed the end caps black with some plastic spray paint and they look great. Thanks for the video!

      Thanks for sharing. Spray foam does work great. We have done that for some other PVC builds such as camera and light poles.

    Very cool. I am trying to build one out. However the plugs I find at Home Depot have the plug on the outside not inside and they will not fit inside a end cap. Any advice on what I am doing wrong looking for the plugs and end caps? (I was looking at the 3/4 or 1 inch schedule 40 area)
    Thanks

      For sheath I just use pvc flexible tubing….kinda like people use in spearguns and other

    Instead of using schedule 20 PVC the white stuff Buy the grey PVC used for electrical outdoor conduit. It holds up a lot better and it's UV protected. It's made to last for almost ever in an outdoor environment. It's available at the same place as you buy the other stuff . Take care

      Thanks for sharing the tip. I agree. Grey plastic piping is stronger over the long term.
      🙂👍👍
      If I hadn’t wrapped it with paracord I likely would have wanted to do grey pipe to prevent UV damage.

      I actually like the Paracord wrapping not only does it look good it gives you a non-slip surface . On the gray you could take 50 grit sandpaper and sand the cylinder in a circular motion not in the length causing small circular grooves and that would give you a non-slip surface also. That would give you an edge if you did not have the money or the paracord available. You did a good job. Take care now.

    Buying these things at the same time from a corporate hardware store definitely puts you on a list.

    I noticed that when you showed your finished harpoon, there was an extra 5/16 not on the outside of the cap on the spear side of the harpoon. Did I miss something, or did you not cover that in your video? I am in the process of building two of these and about ready to put on the wrap.

      +James Heil a nut on the outside of cap at spear end was indeed shown, but not necessary really. The nuts on the inside of the caps hold the rod into the handle. Whether you chose to add a nut on outside of cap (spear end) or not it shouldn't affect the strength much at all since the nuts on inside of cap do all the work. Thanks James.

    Ok, man, this looks great. I have been tried to find a decent gaff online, and nothing reliable. I bought my gaff (kayaker) for around 50$, now the threaded rod is about to fall out, so it is pretty crappy gaff. This one looks very reliable, but a little bit short. I am thinking of adding a wood handle to make it a little longer and more floatable. I would also use 3/8' rod , 5/18" was bending from just 20 lbs king. But this is the best video I have found so far online.

      Beyond the breakers I also made another diy gaff video using a golf club.

      Another vid I did. I looked at gaffs in bass pro and found them to be similar to golf clubs so went to Goodwill and bought a used club to make one. th-cam.com/video/yoxSUY6nWdg/w-d-xo.html

    Any updates on showing it in use? Also, was this for fresh or salt water use? It looked like galvanized all thread, which will rust quick in salt water.

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use in both fresh and saltwater. Like most anglers I spray down my kayak with freshwater after use anyway. I haven't seen corrosion on it. Stainless steel threaded rod is recommended for best longevity. Pretty much always recommend stainless steel for saltwater applications. Thanks for the comment. You are correct in your concerns.

      In regards to seeing one in use The new TV show Pacific Warriors use very similar homemade ones. You can see their technique in use at discovery channel website. I appreciate the feedback. We try to cater our video content based on such feedback. At this time no videos from KayakDIY on this spear being used.

    Very cool idea! Floats ok? I just joined your fb page also....thanks.

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Floats ok but doesn't have a ton of buoyancy. I literally just barely floats handle up. We may spray foam inside if we build another. We got lots of people requesting information on where to get them when they see us out on the water. Most think we bought them somewhere. However, works great and I personally just clip it with carabiner to my Hobie PA's retractable side handle bungee rod holders.

    How long was the threaded 5/16th threaded rod. I assume you spent some time filing the threaded rod to a point? or how did you do it?

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +James Heil : We used a 36" threaded rod (from Home Depot). We were able to sharpen it via a cheap bench grinder.

    Did you drill a hole in the metal rod end cap? Does water get in on that side or have you sealed it somehow?

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jason Tuang The PVC end cap has a hole drilled to exact size of rod and no leaking has taken place yet. What you could do is marine goop the areas near the cap and that should promote even better sealing. Also you could stuff the handle with foam. Lots of options. However, to answer your question...the spear hasn't leaked or filled with water.

    Hi, what's the cement? Pvc cement or something special? Thx

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is just regular PVC cement and primer combo that are common for adhering pvc pipe together. Nothing special. I put primer on first then the cement before connecting the pipe together.

    How does it work???

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Tata Nolo It is used to kill the fish you plan to keep. Kind of like a gaff except straight. Gaffs don't kill large fish really, but are used more to get fish aboard boats. This is particularly useful for large saltwater fish. Kayak anglers will aim for the vital organs and spear the fish then bring it on board after it is subdued.

      +Voznix Actually it works great. We know several kayak angler's from Hawaii (Pacific Warriors/Aquahunters ). This is very similar to what they use everyday. What is your problem with it? Would love to hear your opinions.
