Carlos makes the best gaffs around for local bay area fishermen. I highly recommended you hit him up for one. It's so awesome that he feels the need to share his craft with the community. What a guy.
Excellent tutorial thanks. Just ordered my bamboo blanks and should be here at the house in a couple of days. If anyone is interested, here in So Cal there is a place "Franks Cane and Rush Supply" that sell blanks specifically for gaffs. Nice thick walls. 3 ft up to 7' 10"
Hi Drew, great tip on where to get calcutta bamboo. I was going to order some from them but they never replied to me to my email on shipping cost to S.F. I wanted to get twelve 3' and six 4'. I might still order them later on. Thanks for the info.
@@carlosfung5780 Quick update - my bamboo showed up today. Cant speak to your experience, but they are definitely weapons grade - one of the 3 foot weighed 12 oz. Now its just a matter of "some assembly required". Thanks again
@@drewjames577 Hi Drew, thanks for the update. Glad to hear your Calcutta bamboo is of great quality , that is awesome. Have fun assembling your gaff. Btw, the Mustad 3/0 gaff hooks I showed on the video are not stainless steel so they will rust so make sure to rinse them with fresh water after every use and if you have the ability to sharpen the point it will make the gaff even better.
@@carlosfung5780 Thank you Carlos for showing us your craftmanship. I use old fishing poles to make my gaffs, but I really appreciate seeing your plastic tube protector and how you secure it to the hook - I will definitely give that a go on my gaff. Thank you.
Wow. I need to have one. If Carlos reads this comment, I will have one for free soon. 😜. Great editing video Keith. I can never catch up with your editing skill. Maybe I have to buy a soft ware can editing by itself. 😲
@@mattvoigt01 Hi, I get them at a local garden shop near SF zoo. The bamboo is good but I learned that if you epoxy the whole bamboo, not just the paracord area, the gaff will be much stronger. Also, if you can find Calcutta bamboo the gaff will be stronger. Good luck and tight lines.
Hi Joshua, I used Behr weather proofing and Devcon 2 Ton clear epoxy. For the gaff hook, I used Mustad 3/O hook which you can get on eBay or Amazon. The gaff is not rust proof so definitely rinse the gaff with fresh water after each use. Hope this helps.
I just cut 2 nice sticks of bamboo and want to make a gaff. the bamboo is freshly cut and still green. Should I let it dry before I put the hook on?.. Or just let er' eat?
Hi Theresa, you can buy Mustad 3/O gaff hook online on eBay or Amazon, model # 2286-dt-3/0. Some local tackle stores might sell them but please call them first. Also, these hooks are not stainless steel so they will rust so I suggest rinsing them off with fresh water after each use. Hope that helps.
Hi, I live in San Francisco and I get my bamboo from Sloat Gardening center near the SF Zoo. But see if there a place near you or if you have access to Calcutta bamboo. Just make sure the bamboo is at least 3/4-1 “ thick and with no cracks.
Oh, I forgot MooMoo outdoor is giving away a gaff that I donated to him. Just click on this video and type "gaff" on a comment and you can win. th-cam.com/video/btaf7qwSL_0/w-d-xo.html

How long do I have to wait for the 2nd coat of waterproof after the 1st coat?
Not long, each layer maybe 8 hrs each ( I leave it overnight), bamboo absorbs waterproof coating fast.

They can be found at any Home Depot.
