    lol..hahah. Awesome team work and the dog as well . I just got my husband to watch this and he was asking questions and it was like you were here answering his questions. So we are going to put this information into action. Thank you for taking the time to share this with us. Keep the faith.

    My dad and I are going to make one of these. I have 40 laying hens and they only have access to plastic chicken waterers and it gets annoying having to drag those heavy things around. Great video too!

    Good deal. Thanks for the video. I personally will use acidified cooper sulfate to clean water. Apple cider vinegar will also kill good gut bacteria. But nice video.

    Just FYI, if you put them outside under the gutter and put a screen on the top of the opening of the barrel, you could have the rain fill it for you. And also if you put the barrel on bricks or pavers or cinder blocks, you can put the cups lower. And one more lol, if you stagger the cups with some higher and some lower, then all size of birds can use it easier. I have turkeys, regular chickens and bantams so they all like the different height cups. In the winter you can pour boiling water into it to keep it from freezing and even wrap the barrel with insulation.

    • @joyvybiral7888
      @joyvybiral7888 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What about the cups though? How do you keep them from freezing? If you heat the water inside with a puck heater would that keep them from freezing?

    • @katim3111
      @katim3111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't stay freezing during the day here. I'm in east TN and seldom gets cold for long periods and if it does, I take a bucket of fresh water a few times a day and put it in an oil pan I got at the dollar tree. If I lived in a colder climate, I would use wood chips or leaves as insulation in one of the walls of the coop and put the barrel next to it.

    I have a food grade barrel too and I have the vertical nipples, when I tried installing them. The rings on the nipples started to smush and flatten. They won’t screw on... am I doing something wrong!?

    3/8th is a little to big. Ideally a 23/64 in bit should be used. They recommend a 3/8 because it's common.

    We made one of these for our chickens and we love it except now we’re noticing there is a weird film on top of the water and there are dark spots forming on the side walls above the water level and it smells pretty bad 😳we put in 1 tablespoon per gallon of apple cider vinegar when we started it. do you have any suggestions? Have you ever experienced this with your waterer? We also have a lid on it

    • @MilkAndHoneyAcreage
      @MilkAndHoneyAcreage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no! That’s probably mold I would clean it out with a bleach and water solution. We haven’t had that happen at all. It’s a good idea to let them drain it completely and then take the lid off and let it dry out for a day. Hope that helps. Also we don’t use ACV in ours anymore.

    How is it in freezing weather? I am thinking of doing one and putting a heater in the barrel but the cups are concerning they may freeze and crack. Have you had any issuess?

    • @MilkAndHoneyAcreage
      @MilkAndHoneyAcreage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think the cups would crack but they would definitely freeze up. I haven’t had any issues but it doesn’t freeze for long periods of time here. They usually thaw when the sun starts coming up.

      Milk And Honey Acreage I wish I could say the same about our area. We go through weeks to months with daytime highs below freezing. If I figure out a way to prevent it I’ll post it and thanks for the reply.

      I have the caps and a non removable lid.
      I don’t want to cut the barrel.

      I have a 65 gal. Plastic barrel with an electric submersible heater. I installed 4 freeze proof nipples for 14 hens. I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The water never freezes and it gets well below zero°. They work great.
