The Hollow is still to this day, probably my favorite APC song. The only criticism is that the song is too damn short. To be fair, the song could be 6 hours long and it would still be too short for me. Perfection.

@@whatdothlife4660 Yeah that groove in the Package is crazy, super dark lyrics and mood is a good opening track for the Thirteenth Step record. As is the Hollow for Mer De Noms.

Billy Howerdell never gets enough credit. Its always Maynard. I believe Howerdell wrote near enough the full album. His composition skills are amazing. Paz was an unbelievable bass player on this album too.

    • @st3ngah
      @st3ngah 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Just to add to that Billy plays most of the bass on the album, Paz only plays bass on one tune but she does do vocals and violin on several though.

Oh he gets it from the right people. The whole notable work of APC is clearly in it’s own full compositional articulation. It’s just awesome to get Maynards vocals and melody, which add a bite that is really his contribution.

I feel you, bad shoulder myself...And In Spite of that pain, you had me right back to my "Drummer Spirit" (Lead Percussionist in High School in TX, currently enjoying smiles before work in North Myrtle Beach, SC)...the drums I. that song are so crisp, you also reminded me that I've been promising myself an electronic kit, I live in an apartment complex, can't practice drumming properly without noise. So, Thanks For Being You & helping create such an amazingly beautiful community of "Souls & Inspirations" (Righteous Brothers Nod, My Dad sang that song in is Tenor/Bass voice Soooo Good)

"'Cause it's time to bring the fire down. Bridle all this indiscretion. Long enough to edify, and permanently fill this hollow" What a great song talking the hollowness people live with. Like this song is about a woman who feels hollow inside and tries to fill it with sex only for the relief to last a couple minutes. Same goes for people who use drugs.... they use them to try to feel good feelings even if artificial. But all you're doing is making the hollowness grow. I'd know, it's getting hungry.

It's hard to believe it but it's been almost 22 years since I first heard this song and I still remember the exact moment. It was January and we were on a highway with extreme fog so we could only go about 20 miles per hour, I was getting over being extremely sick but my friend popped this in the cd player and I was absolutely blown away. I had heard tool and I was already a huge fan but this was something different. Something with a different type of emotion behind it. This song reminds me of my leap into adulthood with no plan, no desire for one, no worries. Funny thing is, I actually understand the song now and I didn't before.

Not sure if anyone has pointed this out below, but that harmony on the chorus is sung by both Billy and Maynard. They start right in the middle, just on top of each others voices, then Billy hits the higher key and Maynard splits to the lower key. Took me a while to learn that. If you listen to Billy's own project 'Ashes Divide', you can hear his singing range, register, and tone way more clearly.

It’s stunning you don’t realize the Middle Eastern influence as much until you hear them play their songs acoustically… Maynard and Billy are the modern day Page and Plant

Yeah I remember when 13th step came out I had posted on a form that I thought it was Maynard’s best vocals to date. I got lots of heat and skepticism then.

As a kid, I initially didn't even realize that the two bands had the same singer lol. The performances were so different, APC is much more emotional

Agreed. Always preferred APC over Tool.

@@barbarusbloodshed6347 I actually prefer Tool, but I still think the best vocal performance is 13th step

Mer de Noms is a perfect album! The definitive peak of Maynard's catalogue imho

Right it’s amazing to think that Maynard recorded Lateralus not long after this. Possibly the best performance within a single year ever. Two of my all time favorite albums

Always LOVED this track. If you want a really cool alternative take on it, check out the "Constantly Consuming Mix" version of this, with a totally different arrangement and former member Paz Lenchantin providing the vocals.

man the harmonies with chorus hook me so hard every time. one exceptional example is the final chorus of Orestes...packs so much emotion into it. I'll never forget hearing The Hollow for the first time, my brother introduced me to them (I had no idea it was singer of Tool) and I heard the chorus and was like "who is this again? this is incredible!" been an apc fan ever since, later got into Tool.

Back in 2012 I got to experience APC doing a sound check to this song with just a few of us watching. It gave me chills hearing it that clearly live. Maynard only sang for a few seconds but hearing the instrumental live was absolutely amazing. I got to meet Billy on his recent solo tour and have him sign my APC shirt from then. :)

Pretty sure (0.05 < pvalue ~) that Maynard heard this riff while Billy was Adam Jones' guitar tech, and was intrigided enough to establish the begginings of APC.

  • @chadrat39

Dude I honestly feel like starting my own band called the perfect square with all these different kind of mathematical engineered instrumental songs with simple vocals, Maynard's lyrics aren't that complicated they're straightforward and they cut to the soul
It's the instrumental part that would take me a lifetime to learn how to rhythm the way they do
