Autechre on TV 1994 - 01 Rob Brown & Sean Booth Interview

  • On 15 September 1994, British electronic duo Autechre appeared in person on MTV Europe's weekly Party Zone TV show. Band members Rob Brown and Sean Booth were interviewed by host Simone Angel and a couple of song requests also featured. The programme concluded with Autechre's Basscadet (Bcdtmx Mix) music video. This was a rare opportunity for a multinational TV audience to see Autechre before they achieved their later status & recognition - however, the event is not widely documented nor available on video today...
    A far-from-optimal satellite signal was the source for my own VHS recording. The quality isn't great, but I've decided to upload it to TH-cam as a unique historical record for today's electronic music fans. Enjoy!

      Background music is "Autechre - Autriche" ; Music video is "Mark Franklin - Release to the System"
      I've put both in a playlist along with other videos related to this interview:

      In the 90s MTV was still interested in the underground... I miss that..

      MTV was great in the early/mid-90:ies. Even in the late 90:ies before it went to shit :). Lots of exposure to smaller artists. I learned about Aphex Twin, Coldcut, Hexstatic, the X-mix compilations and plenty of other smaller artists and genres through MTV :).

      this was before Napster and P2P in general. The internet allowed fans of somewhat more left field music to look up new music for themselves. So they no longer had to rely on mainstream media to find it. So when that started happening, MTV and other mainstream media lost a chunk of viewership that would be interested in that. Which lead to them focusing even more on the mainstream segment of the market. It's about how new media, in this case P2P file sharing and the internet, re-segmented the market because it gave fans of more underground music a more direct access to it. It's not about MTV magically losing a heart for underground music; it's just in the early '90s, these audiences had nowhere else to go which allowed MTV to capitalize on it.

      Too simplistic of a view in my opinion. People change drastically over time. Kids who started out going to raves and doing all sorts of drugs sometimes end up finding peace in more cerebral music later on. Sometimes it's the other way around. Other times, it's neither. People are so much more complex than we tend to think.
      Degeneracy has been recorded millennia before today. This isn't anything new.

    Are we sure that this is 1994? They're talking about Garage, assuming UK Garage, but as a genre it was in very early stages at the time. The 2-step variation of the sound didn't even exist then.

    • @mucsavage26
      @mucsavage26 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They would have probably been referring to the American garage. Those records been played pitched up fast possibly/kind of developed into UK forms of garage later in the 90s
