This video is one of the things that prompted me to try baritone ukulele, and I'm sold. Personally I'll take the baritone over the guilele. It's nearly as compact, easier on the fingers, and complements vocals naturally. It does force me to get creative with chord voicings sometimes; also, major 7ths, altered, and extended chords can be tricky, often to the point of shrugging and going with a substitution (almost nobody notices anyway.) I'll live with those issues because the rewards are through the roof. Oh, and did I mention how many problems it solves if you're living in a small space? I'm sold on the breed, and although there are many positive things to be said for my mahogany Mainland I'm also looking for higher-end baritone now.
I'm more convinced day by day that the baritone ukulele is for me, i love the sound of guitar more than ukulele but i am better on ukulele than guitar (i have both) the 6 string is just too much to me i guess so baritone ukulele is the instrument to go
If you're thinking about a baritone ukulele because it's easier to learn than guitar, but you like the sound of a steel-string guitar over the baritone with nylon strings, try a tenor guitar. You can tune it D,G,B,E like a baritone ukulele. It has a nice, bright sound and a narrow neck that's easy to play.
Great point, tenor guitars are great. They typically have bigger bodies than baritone ukulele, more like a guitar, but do have thin necks. There are not alot of tenor guitar makers out there but Blue Ridge makes a good one.
Don't worry you can still get it and play both ;) I have one of each size and switch between them as I like. But I gotta say baritone really is my most played uke 🙈❤ love it
Please, I am thinking about "quitar ukulele". This was not mentioned. Has it some meaning? 6 strings, etc. I like, that is smaller, better carrying. Can you compare guitar ukulele and Bari ukulele? Thank you for video!
I'm so happy to hear you are offering this course because there's so little out there for baritone ukes. Has the course started yet? I don't want to miss it. (I just subscribed and signed up for alerts) Thanks!
Nice vid Terry. You're right with the statement "Best of Both Worlds" . I'm very interested to see the subject matter of your first Baritone course. I'm past the "bootcamp" stage so maybe I can hop in 1/2 or 3/4 way through. naah...dammit, I'll start from the beginning again ha ha...
I think the right first ukulele for every beginner player regardless of age and prior musical experience is the Tenor uke. It comes in standard tuning, and even the cheap ones sound/play very nice. Then after a few months of practice when you're ready for an upgrade (and this WILL happen), you'll know if you want to downsize, stay the same or go bigger.
i love your videos, they’re so helpful i’m trying to figure out the difference between baritone ukulele, guitar leek and the 3/4 travel size guitar 1. i have smalllll hands 2. i don’t want such a high sounding string instrument for what music im wanting to make 3. i have a standard size acoustic guitar that was my sisters. don’t want the beautiful instrument to go to waste. but i can’t play it. but maybe one day i could if i get my fingers more use to it. so…. idk 🤷🏼♀️ idk the difference between guitarlele and the 3/4 guitar maybe i’m missing a video 😬 help 😅
I am playing fingerstyle guitar for nearly 50 years now and think that the bariton ukulele will do it for me getting a new sound beside my Martin and Taylor.
Started on a soprano ukulele and decided that was too small then got a concert uke because I like the sound of the soprano but didn't like the size and just now picked up a baritone ukulele today because I want to play the guitar at some point and so far the transition from the standard uke tuning to guitar tuning isn't as hard as I thought it would be. In fact, a lot of the chords I play a lot are somehow easier to play on the baritone.
Thank You, You Seem Like a Really Accomplished Teacher! Been Playing Guitar Ac& Elct bout 40 years, Never Even Went Near a Uke' Now Im Curious About This One'(Bcz You Can Also Capo It) and The Standard & 6stBaritone Mandolin!🎼🎸🖖🇺🇸
Well I started looking into Ukuleles after getting a Ukulele bass. Now I am trying to decide if a ukulele is right for me particularly the baritone because it is close in size to my U bass.
how’s the tenor uke? i wanted a guitar but 6 strings are too hard for me so thought i would get a baritone but couldn’t find one around my budget so i went for the tenor.
Terry- I’m in your course for uku- thanks , great stuff- have a concert uku now- looking for something a bit bigger, should I look at the tenor or make the jump to the baritone.. been playing a few months- following you and James Hill and Cynthia? You recommended her- love your stuff, thanks
I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get a baritone ukulele. I already have a soprano ukulele but it's pretty old doesn't really have a good sound. My dad bought it. He also owns a guitar that I've tried but I like ukulele better. I love the baritone ukulele because of the lower sound.
I've been wanting to get a baritone uke for a couple years now. I tried guitar and it was very hard for me and I have big ham hands and fat fingers too. Plus the baritone sounds so great! There is a Kala with an electric hookup I'm looking at, or maybe a Kala KA-SA-B. Which do you like? Can't wait to learn how to play an instrument.
I started with the guitar and have now played a tenor uke for 3 months. I like the chords of the tenor, but would like to migrate to a deeper sound that the baratone would give. So, to get the best of both worlds, can you tune the baratone to GCEA?
Dear Ukulele players: Guitar, Baritone Uke, Soprano, other sizes. All are beautiful, but you should take a look on the portuguese Cavaquinho. It is a wonderful instrument.
Just got my first baritone ukulele this week. (also have a tenor guitar that is tuned the same) I can’t wait for your new corse! I am subscribed so I will not miss the start! Thanks for helping.
How are you with your baritone now? I’m trying to figure out which ukulele I want. I have an acoustic guitar but it’s way too big for me and I don’t have enough motivation for it as my starting instrument.
@@AtinyElring Did you end up deciding on a uke? I'm a shorter guy with small hands, and I've struggled trying to learn guitar on and off for years, never quite getting past the beginner stage of fumbling between a handful of chords. I could only ever reach two adjacent frets till I got a short-scale Mustang guitar a few years back, but still haven't make much progress. I got a baritone ukulele back in spring, and while I haven't been picking it up as much as I'd like, every time I do grab it it's a joy. Been strumming through some basic chords the past few days and it feels so comfortable to hold and sounds so warm and lovely. If you're still on the fence, I'd recommend a baritone.
@@mh2120 awe thanks. I’ve been still standing with my feet up on the fence looking over, looking up at the sky dreaming and forming shapes of myself playing guitar. But I’ll definitely get a baritone! I really want to play an instrument. Even though nothing is impossible, it’s a pain trying to stretch my tiny fingers when I can’t. My piano and guitar has been dusting! Thanks for the reply dude I honestly forgot I was interested in ukuleles at one point. Much love!

Terry, your tutorials are so good, thank you!! And, do you have anything on "chucking" with ukulele? I'm looking at getting a guitarlele too, but I'm nervous because I have short and chubby fingers...lol! Is that a bad idea to try?
Or do it like me, buy an tenor guitar and tune it like a guitar d g b e. Four strings is all you need 👍🎶 I own a baritone too but sometimes I wanna have the sound of steel strings then the tenor guitar is perfect for me 😊
What were you playing on the baritone whe you first picked it up? I love the sound of baritone! I'm tiny which is why play ukulele vs guitar (guitar is scary! Lol) and I'm really thinking of add a baritone to my collection
I'd really like to learn the uke... I'm left handed and I'm utterly confused about whether I can just by a righty and string it opposite or if I need to find a lefty... Which is proving to be difficult. Any advice?
Can the baritone ukulele be tuned like a tenor ukulele? I've been learning on a tenor uke for 6 months and like the sound of a baritone, but don't want to have to relearn new chords.
Feels like stringing a baritone with GCEA is a great way for a lower range uke with same chord shapes. What GCEA baritone strings exist to do this? How well do they work?
I know this is a old comment however, I own a baritone uke and restrung it with GCEA and it sounds AMAZING! I strung it with a low G as well. Only thing I would say is the strings are kind of tight, other than that AMAZING, great combination of the UKE and Guitar!
Thanks for that very informative video. I'm sorry, but I still can't see the point of a baritone uke. Imo it's just a failed hybrid between a ukulele and a guitar without the qualities of either. With its larger body and its strings tuned like the 4 treble strings of a guitar it has lost the typical sound quality of a ukulele while still missing the fullness of a guitar.
For me, the best thing about the baritone is that it is as easy to play as the other ukuleles, but sounds like a guitar. It's louder, deeper, and fuller, but it's soft enough that it doesn't drown out my weak voice. It may not appeal to you but it's a perfect compromise for some people.
I think it really depends on the person. I have an acoustic guitar and have been trying to learn it, but I find that because of my small hands (with very short fingers,) the guitar is definitely harder for me to play comfortably. But since I don't, I like the ukelele because I can play comfortably and have more fun without all the stress of not being able to reach all the strings on the fretboard haha
Wow, this has a gap you can drive a train through! Soprano ukulele, full-size guitar, and Baritone ukulele. No sample of tenor or concert ukulele. Kind of a shameless pitch to sell Baritone ukuleles. I am a longtime (40 years) guitar player, who in the past year has gone full-head-first into ukuleles - concerts and tenors. I love it. I presently have little interest in Baritone ukuleles (essentially, a guitar missing the bottom two strings). (I have purchased seven ukuleles from ULTP, so I am a fan of pretty much every ad and video . . . but definitely not of this one).
Seriously: when you transitioned from the guitar to the baritone ukulele, the sound went from great to shit. Just everything screams: completely no. Go back.
You're swaying me towards a baritone. Sounds awesone!

Chords are the same. C on a tenor is G on a baritone. The tenor is 5 semitones higher than a baritone. That's the only difference
My tenor is a low G. I have high G on my concert and soprano
Missed that the Baritone capo at 5th string is then standard Ukulele tuning.
Is it frowned upon or annoying to proper baritone player if someone plays a baritone in GCEA tuning?
Beautiful baritone-what make is it?
I have acoustic and electric guitars. I am curious of ukes also.
I just play all three
