One good thing about the baritone uke is that if you place a capo at the fifth fret, the tuning is then GCEA and can be played as a standard ukulele. I love my baritone uke!

I chose a Baritone Ukelele because I think it's a very unique instrument. I wanted to cover the higher ranges as well so I chose the Concert over a Soprano or Tenor. I think my choices were solid! Even though they're both Uke's they're far from being redundant since both of them have totally different tunings.

I'd add that it is a great Banjo 'gateway' too, as I have mine in Open G (D-G-B-D) and use it as a portable banjo. Great if you want to practice extra quiet or want a different sound. It's so light and handy too! Banjo material is super common as well. I'd say half of the Banjo sound is related to the playing style and it carries across to Uke very well. You can get along on the baritone without the fifth string quite nicely really. Maybe one day someone will make a true five-sting baritone with high G for us Banjo players....

Also, in one of his podcasts, James Hill reports that some songs fit more neatly into his vocal range on a baritone uke without his having to teach his fretting hand a whole new set of chord shapes.

I've been playing tenor and Soprano ukes for over a year, and wanted a new sound and some new challenges. WOW! I love my new baritone, it's practically a different instrument altogether! It's like someone invented a totally new stringed instrument and didn't know what category to put it into. Sounds great, volume is fantastic and it's still uke easy to play with a bit of practice.

I've had my Kanile'a baritone for a good couple of months now, and it has become my primary instrument for playing in ensembles with other ukes. Actually, it's become my primary instrument, period.Almost all the vocal accompaniment I do on acoustic guitar is easily reworked for baritone ukulele, and the baritone is just all-around friendlier. It's way more portable, much easier on (gotta admit) aging fingers, and has a surprisingly wide range of voices that reward right-hand experimentation in particular.
Also, IMHO, it's easier for a baritone to go high than for a G-C-E-A uke to go low. ;)
But I'm still hanging on to my concert, soprano, and tenor ukes too.

Terry, I have to say that I own a few guitars and a strum stick (Smokey Mountain Dulcimer Works) and while the latter is very easy to learn I wanted an extra string and I found the perfect choice in the baritone ukulele. I find that it helps me so much that when I pickup a guitar I am playing better despite years of barely touching one. I'm learning faster on the baritone than I ever learned anything on a guitar. So as you said, they both provide a great transition either way. Since one can play all their baritone songs on a guitar it looks impressive that you can play both.... very cool.

A lot of the time while I'm playing guitar, I just play the chords on the top 4 strings. Cause sometimes I either can't get to the shape fast enough, or the chord is easier with just the 4 strings, or sometimes I just like the sound better without those two extra low notes. So I'm thinking of just dropping the pretense and getting a baritone ukulele.

my main is a baritone. but i like the tenor scale. so i string all my tenors with aquila 21U baritone strings. no need to learn new chord names! tension is easier on the fingers, and it gives the tenor a deeper voice.

I have a baritone and use the regular tenor chords with a capo on third of second fret, because I like to sing but have a deep voice and there is no room to manoeuvre on a tenor. With a baritone I can use the capo higher or lower to suit my vocal range. I love my baritone Kala.

Question: To get a feel, how useful is it to use a capo and remove the EA strings from a Spanish/Classical guitar? There are so many of these things around (often gathering dust from beginners guitar lessons). Not as a solution, but just something to play with and see if you like it.

If you have a deep voice, you can play the chords you’re used to on a soprano, but it will be transposed. For example, if you played what would be a soprano C on a baritone ukulele, it would be a G.

I wanted to try baritone strings on my Tenor uke and had the same thought. I discovered that since the guitar and uke are both tuned in 4ths, I could play all the notes and chords, even from sheet music or tabs, exactly like on a regular low g uke and everything sounded fine, only lower. Of course playing with other standard tuned ukes would not work.

@@rickyelvis3215 I have also experimented with a tenor tuned DGBE and a baritone tuned dGBE. Baritones tuned gCEA or GCEA sound to me like loud tenors. A high g gives a bright ukulele sound. A low G gives a warm more guitarlike sound and allows for a bigger range when picking out notes. It was fun to experiment but in general I like playing gCEA tenors or DGBE baritones.

Yep, I scratch built a Tenor with Redwood soundboard and back and have another Tenor using different woods half way completed and I like or will love each. I am really looking forward to the Bairitone kit from Stewmac arriving soon. I wanted to build a classical guitar and save time by building a quality kit, but they are extremely pricey. The Baritone was on sale for $128, has a solid Mahogany top and is essentially 2/3 of what I wanted plus its neck is not as wide as the classical guitar which is too wide for my small hands. I am sure it will be sweet.

I originally wanted a tenor you, low g, and when went to the shop to get my first uku, for me, I got a concert instead. I'm a new player and the tenor was too big for me and the soprano was way too small. I figured with more experience, I can get a tenor and eventually a baritone. I've always wanted to learn uku, violin, and guitar and relearn piano. 🤗

Hi Your videos have changed my decision from purchasing a travel guitar that! Thank you. I am going from guitar to uke. I would like something light to play while in a cramped space, so I prefer the baritone sound but a little big. Do they come in 1/4 size? I sing in alto, so looking at the concert, but since I cannot tune it to dgbe-, you mentioned that the chord shapes are the same as guitar, just different names- is there a formula to reducing confusion, going back and forth to guitar and concert or tenor uke?. the Tenor I hear can tune at dgbe, does the tension brake the guitar?- What do you recommend? Thank you Mr. Carter

Which gear/ pegs would you use to replace a baritone ukulele's if the cheap original cause issues - guitar or ukulele ones? (Can't find any specifically made for baritone).

Another nice thing is that you can also tune it to the typical GCEA ukulele.

I want a baritone badly was originally drawn to it but settled on the tenor because of the availability of tutorials on TH-cam😟

Well, as the the first one (“High G versus Low G,” actually, “High D versus Low D” on a baritone), you can still do that. I have three baritones, one with a standard “Low D,” another with a “High D,” and the third with a “Low Octave GCEA” set of strings (a set of strings designed for that purpose; a standard set of baritone strings just tuned down to the low octave GCEA would sound like spaghetti). So, my point is, baritones can offer some options too.

I’ve just recently discovered the Bari Uke! My only complaint is that it doesn’t have the low “D’ string naturally. Which string did you use to restring the low “D”???

I love your baritone Bootcamp course! and I love your courses and TH-cam tutorials they have helped me become a JuicyJuicy Ukester in only 13 months! You da man! More Baritone and Guitarlele tutorials please. How about teaching us how to play a cool Buddy Guy song! Just saying!

I found learning ,all the new chords on the baritone a pain , so I am converting my baritone to uke chords by changing to Lava 117u strings ,so I can convert it to uke tuning ,GCEA! And not learn all those new chords ! The size of this instrument is better than a tenor !

so basically: the baritone ukulele is a guitar for tiny people like me. tbh I have both a guitar and a soprano ukulele so I like both it's just playing with a normal guitar that I have is too big for my hands to play.

i'm thinking a baritone uke would be better for a guitar player like me, so I don't have to learn a different tuning, lol. Is that a terrible reason?
Edit: nvm, you answered it in #4, sounds like it's a good reason, lol

Funny I had tried soprano uke, did not like it. Heard baritone ukulele three years ago. I play Autoharp and a little piano. Finally purchased solid mahogany CB 402 by Caramel from Amazon... got straps on today. Purchased on Amazon. Haven’t put down in two days... imagine me a 60 year old woman... But I sing Alto... and I sing in hospitals etc... the low mellow sound is PERFECT!!! Gonna take your crash course. Thank you please make MORE for Baritone Ukulele..🌹🌹🌹👠❤️

I’ve watched some videos and other baritones seem to have a not so thick D string. Just bought one and the same happened, the D string is not thick like yours. It’s “light” D. What strings do you use?
