      @@SynthDad It does some cool tricks, but it's still just a 4 track sequencer. Considering a Beatstep Pro (similar amount of hardware) can be bought for under 240 Euro, the Oxi One should really be no more than 300 Euro.

    • @SynthDad
      @SynthDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@boydw1 I think you need to watch my video a little closer - it's a 4 *sequencer* sequencer, and each sequencer can be up to 8 tracks. A sequencer can be in multiple modes, so a polyphonic sequencer can output multiple MIDI notes, a chord sequencer creates chords from a single row of notes etc. Much more powerful than a simple 4 track sequencer

    It is so cool watching someone about my own age playing with these devices in a normal, relaxed manner, without the Yo What's Up shouting on other channels.

    Thank you so much for the thorough yet beginner friendly guide. I recently got my first analog synth and shortly after, when I realised how much the Oxi One is capable off, I purchased one. Given the vast capabilities of just an analog synth, and adding the Oxi One on top of that, I felt myself getting incredibly overwhelmed by all the information out there. Your video helped me a great deal in understanding some of the features the Oxi One offers, and I look forward to watching your other videos as well. Thanks a lot.

    I've got my empty shopping basket Synthdad on the crook of my arm ready to pop in a new sequencer and a Deluge is available for quite a few more pinds and came across the Oxi One on Andertons channel and it looks like it could help with my music production - the other contender being the Launchpad Mkiii but confusion abounds - as per normal ! I've had a bus pass for several years now so the money i have saved could be invested in one of the aforementioned devices in the pursuit of happiness and generally having fun with my synth/groove/biscuit tin collection.Any feedback would be appreciated,thanks.

    • @SynthDad
      @SynthDad  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello! The Deluge and Oxi One seem similar but bring very different things to the table. The Deluge is an "all in one groovebox" in that it can play samples (e.g. drum loops, long ambient sounds, anything really) as well as having an ok-ish synth engine, and is a good sequencer. The new open-source community firmware builds for the Deluge greatly increase its capabilities. It has 4 gate and 2 CV outputs for sequencing modular synths.
      The Oxi One is first and foremost a sequencer; it can't play any sounds itself. So if you need a good central sequencer for both MIDI devices and modular then the Oxi is ideal. It has more complex generative sequencing modes than the Deluge. It has 8 CV and gate outputs for modular synths, and supports MIDI over TRS, USB and Bluetooth (the Deluge does MIDI over USB and DIN MIDI).
      Regardless though they are both excellent devices; well supported with firmware updates, a strong and active community of users around them, and more than capable of handling almost all day-to-day sequencing duties. They're both battery powered and easy to move around.
      One shortcoming though; neither of them will sequence biscuit tins. Maybe with a future firmware update?

      @twiglet2214 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SynthDad Ok great thanks SynthDad that was very helpful in unravelling the mystery of the devices and alleviating the existential angst - court is still out considering a verdict but the weight of evidence you presented was both compelling and powerful - so whether i'm to be caught in a deluge and washed down the plug hole or become an oximoron is still in the balance.Shame about the biscuit tin incompatibilty - should be a piece of cake to design one ! I'll get back to you with the verdict once we've deliberated. We've started our own band called 999 megabytes but we're still waiting for our first gig ! Many thanks SynthDad.

    Just looking into this. My sequencer experience has been modest, mostly from the Akai MPC. I've bought a lot of iOS stuff with sequencing that I didn't up using, since they were too fiddly, and I realize I don't want to poke iPad glass that much.

      Well the Oxi One can certainly compose songs as it has a song arranger mode. And it's easy to program in sequences in the sequencer and save them to build up songs from patterns. But there is a bit of learning involved in getting to use it well, like any complex gear

      Thanks,@@SynthDad , for the reply! FWIW, I've learned and grokked Reaper and the OP1. So if I'm getting encouraging traction and having fun on a learning curve, I can climb it. The Oxi One looks like it could be the mobile-to-studio glue for song sketches, except for audio. BTW, I don't play keys well, so if a hands-on tool like this sequence feels intuitive enough, it could serve a lot of purposes. I'll check out more of your videos!

    I was looking for a sequencer to run a TD-3, swarm and original access virus. Something that will save loops with easy call back. The plan is to run it through a decent 8 track mixer with send/return. If you had a recommendation for the mixer it would be a bonus. Just to jam about with

    • @SynthDad

      Funny you should ask; I just bought a used Soundcraft EPM8 mixer to do exactly this. It has 8 channels with two send-return AUX channels and inserts on all the channels. Just gives you a stereo out, and no USB interface so you’ll need something else to record with. Alternatively check out the Soundcraft MTK12 mixer if you want 12 channels of recording over USB.
      In terms of a sequencer the Oxi One will give you what you want - save different loops as patterns in the arranger and then recall them as you play live like a clip launcher.

    Great video. I'm thinking of getting an Oxi One. When you start playing with the harmoniser at 10:16 and the bass line adjusts, do you happen to know if it would work in the same way if you're playing in live chords via an external midi controller by hand? From what I read in the manual, it sounds like it may, but I don't know for sure. I'm assuming you would play the chords in a poly seq (as the leader track) vs the chord seq. Thanks!

      Ok I just tested that for you and yes - it does work! I have Sequencer 1 in Chord mode, sequencer 3 harmonized to it playing an arp, and I am using my Arturia MicroLab to the USB port on the Oxi One to change the chords and sequencer 3 re-harmonizes. Cool!

    • @gretalink
      @gretalink ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SynthDad awesome! Thank you so much for taking the time to do that! Are you playing actual chords on the Microlab, or is it just triggering preset chords on the chord track? Sorry, not having an Oxi One yet, it's a little hard to fully wrap my head around it. But from what I've read in the manual, chord mode is only preset chords you trigger with a single key, and that you can only play in custom chords via a poly track. But from what I've read, since you can make a poly track a harmonizer "leader", it should work as well. Just trying to clarify it in my head if you can play custom chords with your hands live, basically. Thanks again!

    Hey,
    Always enjoy your videos a lot!
    I know this is a "it depends" question, but I'm set on buying a sequencer. I'm undecided between the OXI and a Beatstep Pro. I'm thinking of a sequencer for fun immediate jamming, not for careful composing or anything.
    I like the ability to sequence chords on the OXI and I very much like the compatibility with Norns (which I have).
    On the Beatstep Pro I really like inputting notes on the fly with knobs, and I like the price which is 1/3 of the OXI. (Still no way to sequence chords on the BSP, I think)
    What are your feelings regarding these two? Is there anything about the Beatstep Pro's features and overall feel that trumps the OXI, in your opinion?
    Thanks

    • @SynthDad
      @SynthDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh that's a tough question. I don't own a BSP so am not very familiar with it. One way to look at it is the BSP is fixed in what it does, but the Oxi is constantly improving as the developer adds new features. Also you can connect an external keyboard to the Oxi and program notes in that way too.
      I like to use the random generator function on the Oxi One to create lead melodies which are in tune with the chord progression. It's an instant song generator.
      And of course price is an issue - but I think the Oxi is great value for money.

    • @gdrdm
      @gdrdm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SynthDad Thanks for replying! You make a good point about the OXI still being improved on, whereas BSP updates stopped around 2018. I think I'll get a used BSP to see how I gel with it first, but I fear I will be going the "both" route in the end. Thanks again!

      Oxi tutorials are very thin on the ground, the forum is quite good, but it is still a very new sequencer/firmware. Loopops squarp pyramid tutorial is very good, but its a very different sequencer from the Oxi. I'm no expert, but the best way Ive found to learn sequencers is to treat the manual as a source of inspiration - eg how would you use a specific feature creatively for your style, and build a short song around exploring that feature. All sequencers are different and kind of have a philosophy/concept that will lead the way you compose/work to a degree, once the approach clicks everything will be much easier and very quick. Muscle memory, like on any instrument has a big affect too. Just my 2c - I'm no pro.
