      One of my concerns with the Oxy One is that it appears to only have 4 track mute buttons? Perhaps you can clarify whether there is a mode where the multi-tracks can be easily muted individually? If you want to use a sequencer in a more live context, the ability to easily mute parts is (IMHO) pretty much essential.

    • @MidlifeSynthesist
      @MidlifeSynthesist  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@boydw1 hi! Thanks for watching! Yes, you can mute each horizontal track individually (1-8) in multi mode and also mute the entire “main” sequencer page (1-4)👍🏼
      see? Just as I said in the vid, most times you hope it does something, it does it😜

    • @boydw1
      @boydw1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MidlifeSynthesist Can you elaborate on the specific methodology to do that?
      Not having dedicated mute buttons, it's not obvious how that is performed, and how much juggling is required to access the mutes vs editing the sequences (immediacy is key).

    Interesting points about live performing - pre planned v live - biggest thing for live I’d say is to angle the instruments so the audience can see what you are doing - seen a few great acts who sound great but look like they are checking their email - TO YOUR POINT, I AGREE - if you twiddle something the audience should be able to hear a difference to the sound and/or arrangement. I use cheap IKEA BRADA laptop stands. Just my thoughts!

    Just looking into this. My sequencer experience has been modest, mostly from the Akai MPC. I've bought a lot of iOS stuff with sequencing that I didn't up using, since they were too fiddly, and I realize I don't want to poke iPad glass that much.
    I really want to compose songs. Could the Oxi One be a good song sketcher for me? Can I get going with it without feeling like I'm sipping from a fire hose of endless arcane techie learning?

    • @ozten3530

      Coming from a beginner; I sold my MPC One+ after finding out about the Oxi One. Been struggling for a long time to work around sequencing with the MPC into Bitwig for a while, using Akai network midi. Couldn't get stuff synced, midi network worked half of the time ect...
      I recived my Oxi today, and after an evening of tinkering and with help from the Oxi discord, it's all setup.
      1 track for my Hydrasynth, 1 multitrack for my TR8s with 8 different instruments assigned to each track, 1 multitrack I can add 8 mono tracks for VST synths from Bitwig
      Still have ALOT to learn, but with a Oxi I sometimes figure it out naturally before I have to check the manual. I can still get a simple drum track down, and add a bunch of synths.
      So in one evening I could setup something Ive tried to do with the MPC for a long time.

      Hello my friend! This is a midi sequencer, an advanced controller, as in, it doesn’t have any internal synths or samples or produce any sounds. It controls external synths and samplers, both digital and hardware, via midi, cc, or blutooth. It can run the software synths on your daw, trigger samples on your sp404, modulate parameters on any synth you have. Think of it as a master orchestra director and you synths, samplers and plugins are orchestra players for it to direct👍🏼 hope that makes sense!

      It certainly doesn't have internal sounds, what I'm asking you is what can you do with the samples in a digital sampler in you Daw or in a hardware sampler; in addition to triggering samples, can you modulate them in what way? Does he maintain his functions? How do you make chords, for example harmonizations, etc. with the samples? Can do that anyway. I don't know all its functions but I wanted to know what it keeps and what it loses using samples. Thank you !

    I was a day 1 backer on their kickstarter and I do love the device but that rate of updates that you mention is a double edged sword - since I produce music as a hobby sometimes there are weeks and months before I can sneak in a session, which led to several times me updating the OXI before a session only to find that there are major changes again and I have to re-read the updated manual again 😕 I think there’s a fine line between refining a product and not being able to settle for any workflow or UX and constantly switch things up.

      @Rilkir 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Personally, I'd choose the Oxi One. If you only want MIDI sequencing, there's no need to pay more for stuff you don't want on the Deluge. The Deluge doesn't have the generative MIDI stuff (though apparently the Deluge community is trying to create something in that vein, remains to be seen how it will compare to the One's), and the Deluge screen doesn't show as much info as the One screen does AFAIK. The Oxi One is so stacked on MIDI features and is only getting better, it's designed for MIDI sequencing alone and you already know what you're getting rather than having to wait on whatever the Deluge community comes up with.

    • @ywenp
      @ywenp 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Rilkir Sounds alright. Two things that keep me wondering though: first, features are being added to the Deluge blazingly fast since the open source release of the firmware (if Oxi was to opensource their firmware too that'd be a no brainer then).
      Also, the Deluge doesn't have any limitation when it comes to number of tracks (whereas Oxi still is, I believe, limited to 32 monophonic tracks or 4 polyphonic ones). I've been able to try the Deluge pretty extensively lately, but I never was able to play with an Oxi to see whether it'd fit me (would love to though).
      Also, even if I primarily want MIDI sequencing, being able to whip up a few sounds on the Deluge itself is a nice to have (notably for drums), though the Oxi smaller size/flatter format and lower price may allow one to get and pack along some other portable device (eg a laptop) with synth/sampling capabilities.

      @@ywenp The One has 4 different sequencing "engines" which you can use any combination of, so you can use whatever engine works best for each of whatever 4 devices (a monosynth + polysynth + sampler etc). And yeah, it works great for controlling VSTs in your DAW as well. I totally get being fond of open-source firmware, but as far as MIDI sequencing goes, the One is already there. If your biggest concern is track count, you might want to look at the Hapax, but the Hapax also doesn't have the generative MIDI stuff that the One does. There's also the Torso T-1, it has generative MIDI sequencing too but most people say the T-1's UI is more confusing than the One's. I've always been a bit interested in a Deluge myself, but my impression after following it for years is that it's designed to be an all-in-one box (something I'm not fond of personally), and you have to use it regularly so that you don't forget how to navigate it and all of its features.
      I've been very happy with my decision to buy Oxi, it is a great companion for a laptop or iPad running software, or a combination of hardware sound generators. It can also function as a Grid for a Monome Norns if you have any interest in that.

Remember that you can connect a Midi keyboard to any DAW. You might be able to do that with this sequencer too, but the "DAW-less" and ease of use (no cables/wires) is mostly gone then.
      Devices like this seem to be either aimed at programming drum sequences *OR* note sequences (that is, the latter omit a 808-like 16 button section or it's all but useless for programming drums nonetheless). When I did get there I was impressed but for my workflows it just wasn't compatible or enjoyable to me so i sent it back... I think it was a well-made device but just wasn't for me... When i was shopping for a sequencer under $1000 the Play and OXI one were on my list... Decided on the Play for meddling when im working on the road but after the recent + release and other factors like the buggyness when exporting stems and using in DAW, left me pretty disappointed... Still enjoy the Play but i feel it is close to entering my GAS graveyard... hahaha...

    To each their, own people like what they like but I have a big question. This thing costs hundreds more than an Akai MPC One and the Akai gives a big color touch screen with an easy to navigate semi-DAW interface and lets you control as many devices as you have midi channels plus it has built sounds, synths etc and again it's cheaper. Why get the Oxi at all when something like the MPC one exists that does everything thing this thing does but better. Am I missing something or is this along the lines of people don't want to be bothered with any DAW Like at all? In which case my reply would be, so you rather not learn an easy tool to spend money on something thats inferior in every way? If I'm missing something let me know here.

    For generative stuff you could just write your own JavaScript midi generator or use AI to write music for you. Maybe throw away your guitar and play Guitar Hero.

      I think you’re missing the point here. This isn’t a midi pack, it’s not going to write an entire song for you either (the thought of AI writing songs is just depressing and sad to me). It maintains the fun of songwriting since you need to actively dialogue and input choices with it, not unlike writing a song with a band member. It might not be for everyone, but it’s a fun way to step out of the rut and find different ideas to then flesh out.

      @@MidlifeSynthesist sorry, you're right. I was being a twat. But whenever I've played with random/probability controls, it just sounds random, not musical. But maybe Oxi One is different.

      plus way more performative and creative features that you don't have on a DAW like Ableton (despite Ableton 12 added a few after XX years)

      The sequencer on the Electribes is stone-age compared to the Oxi One. Absolutely incomparable.
