Deluge is a self-contained music production device. Oxi One is a sequencer. Different beasts. I wonder what you think of a Keystep pro as a companion to the Deluge.
Not entirely true. A lot of people bought or ended up using the Deluge mainly for its sequencing capabilities. Notably the arbitrary amount of arbitrarily long clips was a feature basically no other hardware sequencer had. Also the very big matrix which was way more convenient than the classical row of 16 buttons where every information must be crammed. Oxi is pretty much the perfect brain in the same way the deluge is a perfect groove box. I’ve tried so many brains. I knew within minutes that my search was over.
really? im considering this, but im a little worried about its intuitiveness. also while I appreciate generative stuff, I also like being really intentional and create chords quickly that im hearing in my head. I dont think I would ever use that "suggested chord mode". most tutorials go over the dozens and dozens of features and dont really show it connected to a few devices and sequencing a part on each from scratch.
Great video! My dream would be a combo of the Oxi, Polyend Play, and Deluge. I bought a Oxi, but sold it and stuck with the Play+ because i use the samples a lot and the random play modes are super fun for improvising. The Oxi sequencer experience is light years ahead tho, plus it just works. Never able to get slides to work on the Play, but within minutes of booting up the Oxi had them going. May have to buy another one lol. Stochastic mode was super fun as well
@@SW-bb8lu they both worked great, but would've spent a lot more time setting things up to work properly for my workflow on the Oxi (mapping samples on external gear, etc). Was willing to live with some of the limitations of the sequencer of the Play, plus I can take the Play anywhere & use it standalone. That being said, if Oxi had internal samples, without a doubt would choose it 10000%. Try em both out & see what works best for you!
I think oxi's main strengths is modular integration with all the cv and gate outputs. The hapax and deluge definitely have more features that justify their price points, but they are like $500usd over the oxi, so I would hope those offer a little more. Oxi one black edition is sooo sexy.
Another generative option on the Oxi One are the Mutable Instruments Grids tracks available on the bottom three tracks of a multi-track sequencer. I love this feature! Oh and it does have euclidean sequence generation too!
@@drewnorth3816 yeah it's a little hidden on the device but the docs describe it pretty well. Let me know if you can't find it and I'll find the section title. Cheers!
could you elaborate on why thats your choice in the end? thinking about getting a sequencer complementing my Rytm, Argon8, TD3 and Digitone. Not really getting warm with the Elektron sequencer workflow somehow.
Just easier to use. I found I had to keep referring to the manual of the Oxi and I didn’t always find the manual that clear. The Hapax just made sense to me and only the harmonizer function was confusing. I don’t rely on these day to day as I also have Deluge and Polyend Play, so being able to pull it out and use it without having to relearn it was useful. But if you’re making this your everyday sequencer, that probably doesn’t matter. And the Oxi gets new updates at a faster rate.
I love the deluge but to be honest the interface is a bit of a hot mess. No way can I remember how to sample something after not using it for a while. Deluge is great, no doubt, but the interface has trouble with all of those features.
I get what you mean. If enough time passes it’s hard to remember where everything goes, much like the octatrack and sp404. For me what really made it way more accesible is the new OLED screen, now I seem to flow with it much faster. Thanks for watching my friend!
A great comparison. But let me mention a hint to the channel of "Will's Witchcraft" who is performing great ambient tracks with the Deluge (and ... my favourite ... the Access Virus 😉).
I have both, but the Oxi still has the Indiegogo software because I couldn’t figure out how to do it. It was fun sequencing so many CV tracks but I went back to the Deluge because it seems simpler? And two CV/gates seems to be plenty. Might sell the Oxi.
@@oxiinstrumentswow I’m impressed just seeing your participation in action towards the community. That says a lot and a huge impression towards me. I have about 8 synths connected to a 8 midi splitter. I program all my sequences on the Digitakt for all my external gear. I don’t like slitting or combining projects to get a decent amount of steps. Your product is looking promising to fulfill that, and it has a seamless workflow for step and pattern building and scaling. I have a notation launchpad pro m3 but it feels limited for hardware sequencing, I don’t get the fluid feel as I know it has limitations. Oxi is looking very promising, well done.
the deluge is great too. I have two elektrons and the issue with sequencing is you cant see the piano roll and editing the notes and the gates is not very good to experiment, at least in my opinion. The deluge you can add or delete notes in the grid and also the gate (by hold the note and tapping 4 steps to the right to cover 4 steps), its super easy, quick, and fun. Absolutely recommend you get the deluge for your octa. Great combo. Oxi one is awesome too.
The Delli is a great devise. It would be perfect for me if it would have a UI for the sound engine like Elektrons and performance mixer capabilities like Octatrack.. It should be a center part for midi and audio, focused on FX processing and sampling to make it more suitable to small and simple boutique synths.
Deluge can send many midi tracks to the same instrument (midi 1a, 1b etc. ) Got a multi voice synth? Create a whole bunch of midi tracks and fire away. Turns that single synth into a symphony.
I've used the Yamaha bluetooth midi adapter with the Deluge and it works great (the Yamaha MD-BT01). Is that what you mean? There's wireless midi too (like the CME Widi Master) but I've not tried that.
some people like riding motorcycles in the rain, some people have convertible cars for the summer time. it's up to you to decide which better suits your desires!
Had 2 Deluges (old and the new OLED)....Nice idea but with wav samples it just crashed all the time. So ended up using it like as a midi sequencer (an expensive one). Kind of pointless when the OXI does midi seq 10x better. Oxi has way mrore connectivity and build quality is superiror. Pair OXI up with the Roland SH4D (for roughly the same price as the Deluge) and its far more powerful. For the me the only thing letting the OXI down is the chord mode - for some reason its impossible to create user chords with Bank A and Bank B of chords. And Deluge has a better arranger mode.
In general terms I prefer a good dedicated sequencer than a groovebox with mediocre synth engines and lacking modern sequencing capabilities. That's why I chose oxi
I think if someone makes music by arranging hand made sequences (for example someone plays keys or guitar and tries to find the right sequences on those instruments), the Deluge is closer to that workflow and has more to offer, (more and longer tracks, audio tracks, looping). If someone composes music on sequencers, using sequencer attributes as a “music idea machine” then the Oxi One has a lot more to offer. The Hapax is a very good choice for both of these music making styles, and out of these 3 devices it is also the one that is easiest to learn and implements the best user interface, and also (even)more midi connectivity than the other 2.
I know I’m not supposed to say this but I’m not very impressed with my Oxione at all. I don’t find the randomiser functions very intuitive or helpful. It takes a while to get something good going from my experience. The fancy mono cv’s made for it are great except the midi out doesn’t work correctly unless I use a stereo aux style cable. Biggest issue I have is that is doesn’t have its own sounds. Now I knew this when I bought it obviously, but I didn’t know how much of a pain in the arse it would be to connect it to other stuff. It never seems to work, and when I connect another, similar unit to the device containing the samples, it works every time. I think the stochastic mode really is useless, everything I make with it sounds like shit. The octave range is always one octave out on a couple of the modes (C1 is actually C2 etc.). Although I don’t have a deluge, I’m going to say, get the deluge
Hi, Attention !!! There is a big error in your comparison of midi modulations that I must correct because such an expensive choice should not suffer from any malpractice: The Deluge LFOs as well as its envelopes absolutely do not work at midi to modulate an external synth or whatever. they just act internally. So no midi LFO! The arpeggiator, velocity and aftertouch as well as the mpe or modwheel work in midi. You should also know that several new scales are coming soon in the next update as well as a chord mod and a custom chord mod.
Hi, thank you for pointing that out, indeed the LFOs and envelopes on Deluge only work internally with its own synths. You can however automate all CC lanes either in live record or grid edit, so it is still very powerful and flexible in that regard. After seeing your comment though, I edited out my mention of LFOs to avoid confusion 👍🏻. Regarding future new features such as chord mode, as I said in the video, new firmware is always coming up on these two and I hope the comment section keeps us up to date. PS: I am a healthcare worker so the word "malpractice" is particularly hurtful to me since it means "improper, illegal, or negligent professional behaviour", which I would argue certainly does not apply here. I appreciate feedback, corrections and even criticisms to my work, but please maintain a civil tone and avoid using such dramatic words, thank you.
Oh, sorry for the term "malpractice" I'm French and it was a Google translation, I'm not an extremist it's obviously not the term I used in French lol, the translation would be more "major error ". You are doing a wonderful job :)@@MidlifeSynthesist
Oh man, I should have held onto my Oxi one, I had it very early on and it kept freezing and crashing and irritated the hell out of me. Seems it’s grown to be a hell of a beast. Looking to get a sequencer again and finding myself choosing between the two, but it’ll probably be the deluge because it’s also a hell of drum machine and rompler too. At least from the last time I used the Oxi, surfing around the grid piano roll was much smoother with the deluge for me, but this was a while ago. The real answer is I shouldn’t have sold either hehe
I wish Roland cared as much about updates as these smaller companies do. Their MC could use a lot of these features, and some other tweeks, but it seems like they're done supporting the 101 and 707.
The Deluge is Synthstroms only product and Oxi only makes a few things, that will probably be in production for decades. If a Roland box is in production for 5 years it’s a miracle. I don’t think their dsp stuff these days is going to age very well.
Hands down, the Oxi One is the biggest hardware let down in my history as a synth nerd/producer. It promises something, it is not. It is not the complex, ultimate Midi Cv sequencer. For the price (and buzz of the YT synth salesmen) one could expect a professional tool for music making. To be fair, the build quality is great. But the main part, the sequencing, is simply not good. The layout is confusing. If you want to create complex patterns with Eurorack and some other hardware synths it all starts to fall apart. It might be okay for the hobbyist to create a semi random sequence. But for the 750$/€ you can expect more. Looking back when I owned the Beatstep Pro, this one is much more hands on and clear to create music with. And the price point is really good. After the Oxi One I went back to sequence with Ableton via Midi CV Yarns, my 0-Control and a Keystep 37. Don't believe the hype!
Try reading the manual. Just because it format come with you doesn’t mean it can’t do all the things you say and make complicated or intricate rhythms and patterns. I mean no disrespect but you are not doing it right. The oxi one is one of the fastest writing tools I’ve ever used and has seen an insane amount of updates. If the oxi is something you find confusing I think you’re going to have a much harder time with anything else that’s half as capable
Eh, can't say I agree. I bought a Pyramid to serve as my main sequencer because I wanted to do live midi looping. I have found it to be frustrating. The manual is poorly organized. Squarp's support for their devices is not great, and the community around the devices tries to fill in the missing pieces, but often I found they did that in defensive and passive aggressive ways. This video reminded me that I need to explore midi looping on my Deluge; maybe I can ditch the Pyramid.
I had a squarp a few years back and it was frustrating and a lot of my gear didn’t work with it well. I sold it after a few months and got an mpc one. It’s so much easier to sequence and can sequence a lot more tracks
Its garbage without VS and aftertouch support not mention the stupidest pricing. Save your money peeps. You could afford an analogue synth at this dumb price.

Stochastic mode was super fun as well
Why did u sell it if it worked and poly didnt for u?
@@SW-bb8lu they both worked great, but would've spent a lot more time setting things up to work properly for my workflow on the Oxi (mapping samples on external gear, etc). Was willing to live with some of the limitations of the sequencer of the Play, plus I can take the Play anywhere & use it standalone. That being said, if Oxi had internal samples, without a doubt would choose it 10000%. Try em both out & see what works best for you!
For my money, the OXI one was the best purchase I’d made in the last 5 years. Hands down.
cool vid !
how would oxi compare to hapax ?
what about the Oxi vs the Hapax?
Looking at a dedicated hardware sequencer myself. Hapax has me sold currently.
I think oxi's main strengths is modular integration with all the cv and gate outputs. The hapax and deluge definitely have more features that justify their price points, but they are like $500usd over the oxi, so I would hope those offer a little more. Oxi one black edition is sooo sexy.
Thx for all your content ! I think it'd be great to add chapters to your videos
@@calcairecamhi thank you my friend!! And excellent feedback too! Much appreciated🙌🏻❤️
Is the oxi open source like the deluge? Just watching your video made me curious about using the two together.
Sooo... is this fill function on the deluge a community feature or have I not discovered it yet?
Yes it is a community feature. Overrides the rarely used sync scaling button.
@@jaysilence3314 ahh ok. see idek what sync scaling does XD
Will this OXI sequencer work with the SP404 Mkii?
10:29 The oxi and the ko2 both look like impossibly perfect 3D renders, but somehow in real life.
Another generative option on the Oxi One are the Mutable Instruments Grids tracks available on the bottom three tracks of a multi-track sequencer. I love this feature! Oh and it does have euclidean sequence generation too!
I’ve had it for a year and didn’t know it had the grid’s functionality. That’s awesome. Thanks for mentioning
@@drewnorth3816 yeah it's a little hidden on the device but the docs describe it pretty well. Let me know if you can't find it and I'll find the section title. Cheers!
I see advantages of Oxi... but in my case Deluge was a better choice. It is a small DAW in a box - and this convinced me to pair it with my synths.
Nice!!! The Deluge is a wonderful instrument, can’t wait to see what it looks like in just a year from now❤️
@@MidlifeSynthesist Exactly! Development for this device went absolutely crazy! Great move from Synthstrom with opening firmware. ;)
Having tried both I decided the winner was the Hapax. But the Deluge is a keeper for all the other features.
could you elaborate on why thats your choice in the end?
thinking about getting a sequencer complementing my Rytm, Argon8, TD3 and Digitone.
The Oxi One is not easy to use. Not at all.
The error lies in not using it for a while. Making the same mistake over and over too.
Hmmm, you could just keep using it…
A great comparison. But let me mention a hint to the channel of "Will's Witchcraft" who is performing great ambient tracks with the Deluge (and ... my favourite ... the Access Virus 😉).
A few notes, OXI One it's also a USB MIDI host and regarding the number of available scales, it has more than 30 !
I have both, but the Oxi still has the Indiegogo software because I couldn’t figure out how to do it. It was fun sequencing so many CV tracks but I went back to the Deluge because it seems simpler? And two CV/gates seems to be plenty. Might sell the Oxi.
If you can't update, please reach to us to find the problem! thanks
@@embazle Thank you!!
do either of these sequencers live record pitch and mod wheel data?
Would you fancy doing a comparison like this of the OXI and the TORSO?
Is a tool like deluge or oxi an addition when already have the octatrack sequencer?
The oxi-one really is. It has some different sequence modes that are not available on the octatrack.
the deluge is great too.
I just wish the OXI was sold at Zzounds or American Musical Supply
OXI def best sequencer I've used for under $1000...
Is there a decent song mode on the Oxi?
The updated firmware for the Deluge offers a ton more scale modes and chord modes.
Oh I’m sure I’m gonna have to make this video every couple of months to keep up😂
Are you implying Midlifesynth hasn't updated the Delgue for this review?
Oxi is far better for this. Its harmony mode follows the master chord track. Way more musical.
@@197979jones The latest Deluge community firmware has a master chord track that follows the mode.
@@marijandesin8226 It certainly wasn't
What about Squarp Hapax?
As you mentioned the great community along with both devices I instantly thought of the amazing community of the Zynthian project.
I love how you didn't commit to liking either of them more than the other...gotta make sure you don't upset users of each 😂
😂😂 it’s a dangerous world out there😜
Not really the same things. The comparison that makes more sense to me would be the OXI One vs Hapax
Nobody seems to have done that yet
Deluge can send many midi tracks to the same instrument (midi 1a, 1b etc. ) Got a multi voice synth? Create a whole bunch of midi tracks and fire away. Turns that single synth into a symphony.
Thanks, i was getting some FOMO but this comparison helped me know I made the right choice for my situation!
Deluge has MPE though.
Has anyone tried the Yamaha wireless midi cable on the Deluge?
I've used the Yamaha bluetooth midi adapter with the Deluge and it works great (the Yamaha MD-BT01). Is that what you mean? There's wireless midi too (like the CME Widi Master) but I've not tried that.
10:55 - Okay then, which one is the car and which is the motorcycle?
some people like riding motorcycles in the rain, some people have convertible cars for the summer time. it's up to you to decide which better suits your desires!
You saying those seq are better than the MPC
I want these to be good, but both feel very weak compared to a single MPC
What’s that watch?
lol, it´s a swatch! I have an amazon link on the description if you want to check out the precise model. Thanks for watching!
@@MidlifeSynthesistshowing your medical professional side with that one ;)
@ 😅😂
Jitter?
I was bit nervous, but I pulled through😂
Hi, Attention !!!
So if it's raining, I have to get a Deluge? 😀
it´s the law!

A person of culture :D
The true king of sequencers is the Squarp Hapax. Very few realize this.
Great vid and thanks for your insight.
I wish the Deluge had a Roland Sound engine
I wishe deluge has a roland sound engine.
Looks like you forgot to include probably the most capable of all midi controllers, hapax.
I’m coming from left field the Cirklon 2
🤟
But Oxy has only 4 tracks. No? AFAIK, we can set one track to play 8 sequences, but only mono. And no scenes, no songs.
4 tracks really? Wtf
32 mono tracks max, four minimum. Any combo in between. There is an arranger. Each project can have up to 10 songs.
Hapax...
The Deluge is what the Polyend Play Plus *should* have been.
Did he just call the deluge a MPC
The Oxi One isn't an option for me since it has no audio. So for me, the question was Deluge vs Force... and I chose the Force.
Deluge.
Why not compare the Oxi One vs Torso T1. That two gear doing the same thing…
Cause I don’t own a Torso T1😂 thanks for watching my friend! See you soon!
Squarp enters the chat.
Pyramid and Hapax are far far superior to Deluge for midi.
The plot thickens!! Hopefully someday I’ll be able to try them out, thanks for watching!
Came here to say the Hapax is king.🎉
I had a squarp a few years back and it was frustrating and a lot of my gear didn’t work with it well. I sold it after a few months and got an mpc one. It’s so much easier to sequence and can sequence a lot more tracks
And again...Hapax
Cirklon would like to have a word.
Tbh just combine the two of them..
Deluge is better it offers more
Thing is that op-z is better than both of them)
Its garbage without VS and aftertouch support not mention the stupidest pricing. Save your money peeps. You could afford an analogue synth at this dumb price.
