    The vintage Kenner Star Wars Death Star Droid is unfortunately one of those figures that just does not hold up well, but there is a solution.

    Hey Dean, glad you like the DSD, nice to have a shiny one with stiff limbs, I think our Stanleys got 3 originals in his collection, and non of them can even stand up, so he was happy I made this also lol. Keep up the great work

    The Death Star Droid and original Leia were the first two figures I recieved as a child, and my collection unfortunately retained neither, so I had to buy an old one and do some restoration work to get one recently. Now I wish I had waited for this bad boy. Thanks Dean, cracking figure!

    Now that Death Star Droid is a beaut! I've actually been pondering getting some Stan weapons to re-arm some figures I acquired from a flea market a couple years ago. I did manage to find a DSD for $6 from a comic shop, though with that being said, he is floppy as all get out, and the finish leaves quite a bit to be desired. He was also a childhood favourite, and was even my de facto TIE fighter pilot, as I somehow managed to conflate the DSD with the TIE pilot at that time.

    • @AllThings80s

      I've actually heard other people say that they used the DSD to pilot the Tie Fighter.

    When I moved from my boyhood home in the mid 90s, we found a Death Star Droid buried in the ground. It was missing a foot and virtually all of its paint. I don't remember burying it, but there were no other kids around, so it had to be me.

    SS have done a great job. My Death Star Droid is from when I did a swap as a 10 year old and I still have it nearly 40 years later. As a kid I painted it with a metallic silver pen and black marker and it looks like hell, but it’s never leaving my collection

    Another comprehensive and entertaining video from Dean, for All Things 80s.
    This comparison video clearly demonstrates the differences between a vintage Death Star Droid and a Stan Solo Death Star Droid, without causing, or meaning to cause, any offence to either vintage or modern collectors.
    And yes collectors, at the end of the day, the choice is entirely yours, but with videos like these, your choice can now be an informed one and surely that's a good thing.

    People have to realise just because something has the "star wars" label on it does NOT automatically make it valuable... There have been many items with the star wars label on them that were worthless (worth no more than the price they originally sold for) and are worthless now.. As Steve Sansweet said to a fan at a convention when asked how much a particular toy is worth he replied matter of FACTLY "it's worth what you paid for it".

    The left one is the derelict Threebee protocol spy droid. He looks all scarred, bruised & beaten up. He's the one that was left behind
    in the Jawa Scavenger Sandcrawler that crossed the vast deserts of Tatooine in "Episode IV - A New Hope". For sure he doesn't need any
    weathering effects anymore ! ! He was banned from the Imperial Administrative Bureau on Coruscant long ago, during the era of the Clone Wars
    -because of a faulty translation job during important negotiations. But his erroneous interpreter programming wouldn't even let him communicate
    with the many moisture vaporators on the remote & arid planet of Tatooine. That's why this worthless peace of junk was left behind in the clutches
    of those double-dealing treacherous Jawa scavengers in the first place.

    IT helps a lot not to handle it too much. I got 3 threepios in a lot. One is decaying, which i usually handle for display. The other is all shiny and i keep it wrapped in a thin piece of clothing. The third one is the removable limbs one so its naturally worn out. I also got the death star droid and i never touch it since i realized your fingers rub off the Metallic Effect

  • @Usurper123
    @Usurper123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My original DSD from 1978 is till stiff but I got annoyed how easily the paint scuffed and scraped it all off with my fingernail. I'll have to haul it out to see how the vac-metal held up.

  • @TheBadger74
    @TheBadger74 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi Dean, I knew you were going to tell us about the Stan Solo version before I watched your video :) It looks glorious doesn't it? He has also made a black version with silver eyes, like the actual Death Star Droid from the movie. The silver one is actually seen in the Jawa's Sandcrawler looking dazed... Another Kenner quirk :)
    My old one died years ago- first the limbs went loose, the metal and paint wore off, the left hand broke off, as they were prone to do, and at some point he lost his head. I found him recently in an old box of toys, with an awful green paint job I must of done as a child, after his injuries.
    Seeing the price of them now, I have to agree that repro is a good option in this case.

    Probably I'll buy the Stan Solo copy of the Death Star Droid some time later on.
    Indeed: it took quite some time, effort and a whole lot of money to obtain a mint copy for my collection.
    I bought several carded instances of the silvery vac droid action figure & quite possibly spent (much) more than 1000 eurodollars
    before I was able to procure myself one in acceptable mint condition. (But I want at least one specimen of each original of the 96 Kenner action figures.)
    So, probably I'm a fool & joker, but when it comes to STAR WARS... I can get very serious & I'm not joking around about that obsession from my childhood.

  • @RetroFett
    @RetroFett 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I purchased these figures back in the 1970s and 1980s... the Death Star Droid always looked to have quality issues, even "mint on card" to the best of my memory. Poor black paint application.

  • @justfrank3135
    @justfrank3135 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Nice comparison Dean! A common problem with the DSD. For loose legs on vintage SW figures I usually use sealing tape, wrapping it around the limbs. Makes the limbs stiff as a dead body. I haven't seen the Stan Solo version. Looks very, very nice and is shiny as hell. Indeed, you pay a lot of dollars on these loose vintage DSD's, not worth the money i.m.o.

I do have a carded original death star droid o e of four carded figures I got in 2006. It's on a return of the Jedi card. I paid $100 I think from Brian's toys. The bubble is dark and Bailey see him. My original figure from a child is in poor shape. Because I didn't want to re card my figures from childhood I have been re collecting the figures. The death Star droid I got was in bad shape and had to touch up the eyes shoulder. If it new about the SS creations I would rather have purchased that. I paid $20 I think for the figure.

      This is the sandcrawler droid, in the movie, it looks, rather appropriately, that it's on it's last legs. Later, a similar droid in all over shiny black is briefly seen in one of the Death Star corridors. The makers probably thought that "Scrap pile droid" might not be an attractive name and/or that they had enough black figures with Vader and the TIE fighter pilot.

    @ 5:58 does it look like the seller did the Teflon tape in the joints trick? Not necessarily a bad thing if you list it that way. Do the old ones look good after a clear coat? That’s normally the last step in manufacturing and might be easy to replicate. The Stan solo copy seems nice for $48. But from a vintage automobile guy’s view, they really need to put the year on it to keep it fair.
