The only booker I had read. I found it interesting in the themes it covered, the repetition didn't bother me personally, not did the lack of plot. However seeing your review pop up in my feed I didn't initially think that this may not have been a favourite for you given the lack of plot. Because it was short I did read this one very quickly, about 2-3 days I think when I had some time slots and head space to read. One thing I didn't think of until your review was actually the narration style, repeatedly using the full name and the connection, of lack of, of the characters, made me think of it mentioning the magazine and the whole outward personal and internal world in instances where you would have to meet and do something with/against someone else but your only knowledge if them is the info sheet and how the box, that's all I'm you are given of them... Just a thought. I also liked the exploration into the difficulty of young women/girls in getting to do this sport/sports not usually done my women and also their own home life/impact in that lie money, familial support, how good or invested their coaches are and how that conflicts with the level of devotion and drive the girls have in the competition themselves. So I personally would say I liked it, I enjoyed thinking of the themes and ideas it brought up, the narration was repetitive but wasn't an issue for me and I found it readable enough to get through it quickly. But not a book I love. I also don't think I would have thought about it as much after reading it if it wasn't for others reviewing it as it didn't feel like it stayed with me on its own, but from listening to other reviews (Jen Campbell and Hannah lost the plot) that has made it go from a good book to a more interesting book as it's made me think about how I viewed it differently to others.
I have to say, even though I haven’t loved the books this year, I do love all the discussion. As you say hearing other people’s thoughts definitely makes me consider the book from different angles. I enjoyed the commentary on women in a male dominated sport too, but I wanted a lot more of that. I feel like Bullwinkle barely scratched the surface. I’m glad it work d better for you than it did for me matey.
I felt quite similarly to you. I didn’t think I wanted a book about boxing until I started reading this and realized I was disappointed there wasn’t much boxing. It was a strong start, but the repetition of it was a bit tiring.
I finished this today and I agree with you entirely. I started off really enjoying the story, but it didn’t come together for me and fell flat. The repetition drove me bonkers too!
I think I pushed the tedium of hearing their full names over and over from my memory, but yes, you have reminded me of how irritating and unnecessary that was. Would be into reading a novel exploring a few of the characters more deeply and with repetition ditched.
Oh dear! So sorry you wasted your reading time. Maybe you should just skip the remainder of the Booker list for this year and hope that next year will be better...
I dnf'd it. The repeating of their whole names really got to me.
I wish I’d DNF’d it 😂

I agree 100% on this. I liked it, it was ok but dragged in places and I definitely don’t want to re-read it.
💯

Looks like we are pretty aligned. Such a shame 😕
Thank you for reading this so I don't have to, it sounds disappointing.
Ditto
You’re very welcome 😂

Such a shame, the potential was there but not the delivery 😕

Yes, completely agree. I found some characters more interesting than others and would have liked a deeper dive into them.
I think I’ll give this one a miss as I haven’t read that many positive reviews on it.
Yeah, I wouldn’t rush to it mate 😂
@@GemofBooks 😂
Probably not one for me!
There are about 1000 books if recommended to you ahead of this one mate 😂

I’m thinking the same 😂😅
