Love this wide-ranging, *fantastic* list of books! 📚📚📚 Thanks so much for putting together such a fun, info-packed video, and I hope you really enjoy this 3yr project! But how in the world are there so many BookTube channels I've never seen??? (The YT algorithm is not my friend!) Now I'm going to add a bunch of these books to my "definitely read" list (which I just created) - and then I'll spend the rest of the week subscribing to all these channels and binging some great videos! 😂
I'm with you! I just turned 59 recently, and there's no way I want to be tied down to doing 60 before 60 in only one year! 😱 So after I turn 60 next fall, I'll put together a 70 before 70 list. Thanks for the inspiration! 😊
What an amazing list of books and gathering of the booktube community! And a lovely tribute to Alice as well - I also wholeheartedly recommend Dear Reader. Hope you become an Oates fan as well. 😊📚
💯 What an amazing idea! I turn 44 on Nov 28th and think I need to come up with a list of 50 books of my own. I love that a list like this doesn’t come with a ton of pressure because we have a decent amount of time to do it. Also, you are in for a real treat with a lot of the books on your list. Can’t wait to watch your progress!
What a fantastic list of books! I just turned 60 yesterday 😱 so I guess I need to start compiling my 70 before 70! Your list is a great place to start. 📚💯
There was cheering when Kaitlin recommended A Brief History of 7 Killings, there was admiration when Jennifer recommended The Bell Jar. I'd be willing to guess both those make top 10.
I finally made it to this video! Thank you for such kind words and I'm so excited to hear what you think of these books as you go through them--you have some excellent recommendations! 💯💯
I love the diversity of recommendations you've pulled together-it’s a testament to the thoughtfulness and warmth of the Booktube community! Ranking the books as you go sounds like it'll add a fun twist to tracking your progress. Can’t wait to see your thoughts on each book as you tackle this list, especially as you reflect on how each one resonates as you approach the big 4-0! Thanks again for including me in your project, and here's to an incredible three year reading journey! 📚✨
Yay! What a fantastic list! I might have to borrow this idea in some capacity as I’m just a couple of years from 40 as well. 😅 I’ve read and enjoyed The Four Winds. It’s pretty bleak, but I thought it was decent. Babel is my favorite dark academia. I love how it subverts a lot of typical dark academia tropes. I love A Gentleman in Moscow. After you read that one, I have a Recipe & Review video that was inspired by that book. I teach how to cook one of the dishes mentioned in the book. :) I just picked up Eve if you feel like buddy reading it. 😅 So excited that you’re happy with my pick! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. :) Parable of the Sower is a good pick! I’m not big on classics, but that one is quite interesting. Ahh Tomorrow And Tomorrow And Tomorrow.. I actually didn’t care for it. I found it quite dull. The Island of Sea Women is so good! It’s also brutal, definitely good for misery may. Really anything by Lisa See is worth a read. Kindred is excellent! You should check out the review of it by Kindles & Kicks. He really articulated why it’s so good so well. Excellent video. Looking forward to hearing what you think of all of them. Also, please rank them. 😅 I’m not competitive at all.
You should definitely do a list! I’d love to see what’s on yours!! Sounds like I’ve got a lot of books that are Bandy approved!! That bodes well given how similar our tastes are 😂 I think I might have to pass on the buddy read this time matey, I’m a bit all over the place at the moment, and keeping up with any kind of chat is proving a challenge 😰 roll on the end of the year. I’m in desperate need of a reset!
This is such a fab idea and I'm so glad it all worked, as it was brilliant to watch!! I've read some of these and own quite a few of them, so will be good to hear what you think. Maybe make a playlist for all the 40 videos 😊 I love that Alice has a choice in there, and I remember how much she loved Dear Reader. Xx
Im glad it came together too 😂 A playlist is a great idea! Couldn’t miss out Alice, she’s been such a huge influence on my reading, and that won’t change.
What a great idea to ask your fellow booktubers to make your list for you and what a brilliant varied list it is. Good luck!!🙀🤪 What a shame no one gave you a Dickens!
@ yeah I believe you! Brilliant list and brilliant idea of yours. Like the photos of Alice - of course - she looks crazy happy in them and so alive. Thanks for making her laugh and being a great friend.❤️
Fall on Your Knees is outstanding!!! Hooray to Jess for that recommendation. Regarding the doorstoppers on your list, like Pillars of the Earth and Eighth Life (Fall on Your Knees is hefty also), I recommend thinking of them chapter by chapter. Tell yourself you will just read a chapter each month. It’s likely that you will end up getting wrapped up in the story and read the books more quickly than that, but nevertheless, it’s cracking the covers that tends to be the biggest obstacle for me. Speaking of which, A Fine Balance has been on my TBR (and a physical copy on my shelf) for ages. I may overcome my dislike of Discord in order to join the FOMO group read. I haven’t yet read The Parable of the Sower and I am considering getting the graphic novel adaptation from the library. Kindred is fantastic and I think you will enjoy it. What a lot of great recommendations you have for the next few years! 💯
Well now I’m even more excited for Fall on your Knees!! Yes - tackling the big ones a little at a time is a good strategy. Saying that, I’m still not finished with A Suitable Boy that I started with your readalong at the beginning of the year! 😬😂
I’m 50 next year, I think I might make a 50 before 50 list. I keep saying I’ll start making booktube videos so you may see that in the next couple of months. Btw, I started reading Sherlock Holmes recently because of Alice, and I absolutely loved what I’ve read so far. She’s still encouraging people to read her favourite books, I didn’t know her well, but I think she would like that.
You should absolutely do both a 50 before 50 and join BookTube! If you do, make sure you let me know 🤩 Alice would be so delighted. It certainly warms my heart to know that her influence is still encouraging people to pick up books that she championed. Thank you 🧡
💯 What a list! Ohhhh, Flowers For Algernon was wonderful! If I had a list of my 60 years of authors read and ranked with Joyce being at the bottom, Milton would be down there with the dregs - just sayin... A lot of my brain cells died trying unsuccessfully to understand Paradise Lost. 🙁 KD is not your friend. Love that you included Alice ❤ I look forward to your thoughts on each of these over the next 3 years.
Yeah, I feel that Milton (and probably Wolfe) will be at the bottom of the ranked list 😂 I couldn’t not include Alice, she has been a huge influence on my reading over the last few years, and always will be 🧡💔
Thanks for the mention, good luck with your project. Charlie's recommendation "The Eighth Life" is on track to be one of my 5 best reads of the year. I know it is very long but it is worth the time spent on it, it follows the difficult and often tragic history of 20th century Georgia, through one family. When I saw it on your list I wondered if it were the book I'd recommended, but no my recommendation was the wonderful Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, which is loosely about gaming but I am no gamer and I loved it. Dear Reader, Alice's posthumous recommendation sounds intriguing.
Thank you for recommending me a book Jim ☺️ I don’t think I’ve heard a single negative thing about The Eighth Life or Tomorrow x3, so I think I’m in for some treats 😄
💯 great list! Thanks for letting me pick one. It is all short stories but yes all on same body as tattoos “coming alive” to tell the stories and the interaction of that man to the narrator of the book. Gave me “twilight zone” vibes! ❤
I read Dear Reader because Alice mentioned it and I loved it and really related to it. I'm also a big fan of The Fifteen Lives of Harry August and Flowers for Algernon. This sounds like a fun project.
I'm sharing my 40 before 40 next month, so this was interesting to see. I have about 10 months till I'm 40. As new book tuber this is a helpful tool to find some good people to follow too.
I finished The Bell Jar yesterday! It was Emily Fox's book club book. I enjoyed it but its 50/50 on whether she'll rip it to shreads lol. I can vouch for both Butlers! My most hated book of all-time is on the list! Can't wait to see what you think! (I'll tell which one if you want) 💯
@GemofBooks My most hated book of all time is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, P.S. I still enjoyed it but Emily Fox did DNF The Bell Jar. Those two books are similar but one is written from a man's perspective and what is written from a woman's perspective, and one was written by an employee at a mental institution and one was written by a patient, it might be worth reading them near each other.
💯What a fabulous list, I definitely think you should rank them. I think you should read the chunksters first and get them out of the way or they will taunt you for the next three years😂
💯There's some things we definitely have in common, e.g. taking pressure of ourselves in banning tbrs and then planning a new monthly reading project straightaway, a lot of chunksters included. This could be me. 😂 Oh, and I could see some potential buddy reads on this list in case you are interested. No obligation of course! Augustus is my favourite book of all time! I love that book so much.
I know, I have no control 😂😂 I would love to do some buddy reads - which ones tickle your pickle? (Next year though 😂) Oh wow - favourite book of all time?! High praise indeed!!

@GemofBooks I'm not a dark Academia fantasy lover - it feels like a lot of book to be at uni, discussing language and themes! 😉 I am sure it is well written and put together, but it is not calling my name. 💜📚
@GemofBooks done. 32 real books. 32 kindle and 16 audio books. All I already own. It's a drop in the bucket, but at least I'll get some of my books read.
You are not even in your late thirties I say 29or 30 for me and thank you for giving me 40 books 📚 to read in the future prayers and blessings for you and your family love your Aussie family friend John ❤❤❤
Unfortunately I have not read all these books... And I am well over 40... Yay for Jack! Love Pillars of the Earth. 😂Also loved Dear Reader. There are a lot of great books on there! The book of One Flew over the Cuckoos nest is so much better than the movie. And Passing is so much better than the Vanishing Half. Henrietta Lacks is one of my favourite non-fictions. Awesome list! Now I'm going to tally up how many I've read. :) _edit: 14 Read... What have I been doing with my life_
@@GemofBooks I checked Storygraph, because I think you've read a lot of my favourites. But I'd say either Small Island by Andrea Levy or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. You can read those before you turn 41. 😁
Great idea, and love that you were able to include Alice in it too ❤ So many of these I haven't read yet but do own 🫣 so a good reminder to go back to the books I have but have not read yet. I've double checked and in case you weren't aware, paradise lost is on Audrey so.....audio plus guide. Shocked at you having not read bell jar before, maybe I'm showing my ages but it feels like and angst book of my generation (over 40, but just a little) at college (UK college). Passing is short, but fits a lot in and one where it's more atmosphere, tense. 📚
Love this wide-ranging, *fantastic* list of books! 📚📚📚 Thanks so much for putting together such a fun, info-packed video, and I hope you really enjoy this 3yr project!

Such an amazing list!! Apart from all these fab recs it’s like a big Booktube love fest which I feel like in this crappy world we DEFINITELY need ❤💯
Exactly! Who doesn’t love a big BookTuber love fest?! 😂
I definitely think you should rank them!
I love that Jane helped you choose an Alice pick!🥰🤗
Jane is so lovely, I just wish Alice was here 💔
@@GemofBooks I do too❤️🩹
I’ll be 61 on Nov 26th , I’m compiling a list of 70 books before 70 after this.

I’m really hoping I agree with you on Oates, she’s got quite the backlist for me to explore if I do 🤩

5 is pretty good mate - I haven’t read any yet 😂😂
I’m surprised that Babel is on your ‘no’ list!!
@GemofBooks
I'm not a dark Academia fantasy lover - it feels like a lot of book to be at uni, discussing language and themes! 😉
I am sure it is well written and put together, but it is not calling my name. 💜📚
@ChattieTheMadChatter that’s fair 👍🏻
I would read the telephone directory if Amor Towles had written it! Lucky you, to have the rest of his books to read.
From the one I’ve read of his, he is very talented 🤩
My son was 37 yesterday. Another 1987 baby!
Happy birthday to him for yesterday!! 🥳🎈
I have a beautiful press pre release copy of Cathy's Dear Reader, I could pop this in the post for you as a little gift to remember Alice? xx 💯
Oh that’s so kind of you. I do already have a copy though that Alice gifted me. 🧡
💯

Geez,I guess I need to make a list of 80 before 80!
Yes!! Do it!! 🤩
Haha thank you
@ no problem 😉

Unfortunately I have not read all these books... And I am well over 40... Yay for Jack! Love Pillars of the Earth. 😂Also loved Dear Reader. There are a lot of great books on there! The book of One Flew over the Cuckoos nest is so much better than the movie. And Passing is so much better than the Vanishing Half. Henrietta Lacks is one of my favourite non-fictions. Awesome list! Now I'm going to tally up how many I've read. :)
_edit: 14 Read... What have I been doing with my life_
I’m so excited for all of them!
14/40 is pretty good going mate!! If you were to add one to the list, what would it be?
@@GemofBooks I checked Storygraph, because I think you've read a lot of my favourites. But I'd say either Small Island by Andrea Levy or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. You can read those before you turn 41. 😁
Or 11/22/63! Love a bit of time travel. How can i pick just 1...
@-ParisTexas- 😂😂 perfect!! I have both on my kindle 😜
@@GemofBooks You're set for the next 4 years.
💯 Love this list #fomo 😂
Such a great list - I love BookTubers 😍
💯 :D
🧡💯🧡
A bit too late for me since I'm 41.
Just add 10 and make it a 50 before 50 🤩😜
@@GemofBooks Lol. I think I'll get to read more than that before I turn 50 but see your point 🤭
@ 😂😂😂
The pillars of the earth is extremely long and boring. The book thief is terribly bleak.
Bleak is my thing, so that will be fine 😂
I’m hoping I disagree with you on Pillars 😬
Great idea, and love that you were able to include Alice in it too ❤
So many of these I haven't read yet but do own 🫣 so a good reminder to go back to the books I have but have not read yet.
📚
Ooo - thanks for the Paradise Lost tip! That may well be the way to go 🤩
I can’t believe I haven’t read The Bell Jar either 😆
