that was really cool. nice drive from Reno to Virginia City. i didn't realize they were so close together. and Gold Hill next door. heck the sign said only 16 miles to Carson City. i love the desert. both in Nevada, or Arizona. beautiful country! they're still finding gold around that area, love it.
Fantastic, I moved to Reno from the UK in January 1999 and lived just off Mount Rose hwy. I would ride my mountain bike with a couple of buddies up the Toll Road taking the old pioneer trail up Geiger Grade, this used to bring you out right where the mobile speed detector unit was situated in your video. Moved back to the UK in 2003 and miss this part of the world a lot (now living in Texas lol). Wonder if it’s still possible to get up the old pioneer trail?
If you'd gone further, you would have reached the Devil's Gate, where the canyon narrows on both sides and, in old days, they blocked the road and collected toll fees. From your video, it looks like they're doing repair work on the old Forth Ward School. When the road drops just after the school (at the south, far end of Virginia City), that's one of the steepest grades in the entire West. I think it's a 15 percent grade, or something like that. You really drop. It's just a short S turn, Geiner's Curve, they call it. (not sure of spelling) I was always careful going down that. If you want to know what Virginia City was really like, when you go downtown (the main drag is C street) look at the second floor of all the buildings. The second floor didn't change much. The ground floors did. Also, while you're at it, go up to B street and look at the out door statue of The Angel of Justice on the Court House. Her sword is pointing into the ground instead of up, she does NOT have a blindfold, and her Scales are visibly tilted. One of the true classics of the Old West. Lordy, I miss that place.
Is this hwy to Virginia city really steep? I have fears of driving wonder if this trip will cause anxieties. I drive hwy 80 to reno from california thats not so bad
@@CHRISMED2 if you have anxiety it will totally trigger it lol. It's about 20 mins of driving on the edge of the mountain range. And it's very very high. If you're scared of heights. It will be hell
I lived at the base of that grade for more than 20 years, and went up to Virginia City and came back down the grade all the time. It's about 11 miles from where the hills begin to Virginia City itself. The summit of the Geiger Grade is 6789 feet, and you'll see the sign when you get to it. It's a ways off. No, the grade isn't bad at all. It swerves a lot, and your only danger is going too fast. Stay slow, and watch out for crazy people speeding. We'd hear ambulances all the time - fools rushing up or down the grade (usually down) at a high rate of speed. Sometimes drunk (tourists, you know). They'd loose it, and there you are. The grade is not bad. It's actually quite beautiful. There are places where you can stop and take pictures. Now, if you want a really steep, terrifying grade, go from Minden, Nevada up the Kingsbury Grade to South Lake Tahoe. That one is scary. I don't mind going up the Kingsbury, but I do not enjoy coming down the Kingsbury. If you decide to come down the Kingsbury Grade, go to an airport first and buy a parachute. - Best wishes, Bob.
